I know it's going to be bad when the Surgeon says I will experience "a great deal of discomfort".
Wish me luck. I know I am being a huge wuss, but I am really nervous.
I had all 4 removed right before my 18th birthday...the anesthesia was really weird...I woke up crying!
I went home and passed out, when i woke up the pain was really intense, but I had a full prescription of hydrocodone...soon after the pain was something of the past and I was quite loopy. Did a lot of sleeping. I woke up one morning with one side swollen and I thought it had got infected but I just kept taking my antibiotics and it went away.
You'll be okay...the drugs are fun.
DO NOT try and clean the wounds by hand. Follow every instruction they give you. If you're a smoker, don't smoke.

I had my bottom two pulled last year, both were impacted, broken and rotten. He had to remove them in pieces bit by bit from my jaw with a big hook type thing... I'd never heard my own jaw crack before that day :(
The actual proceedure wasn't painful on the left because the anesthetic had kicked in after the FOURTH dose... that was also after he'd done the right side with one little dose of anesthetic. I went through the ceiling with the pain. It was my own fault though, I had let my teeth get that bad and I had such a bad infection in my actual jaw bone that if he hadn't removed them then, it could've given me blood poisoning within a month. I then went on to get something called 'dry-socket' where the wounds didn't clot and I had to have further painful proceedures to solve that. Again, my own fault as I was over zealous and rough with the aftercare... even though the dentist told me to be gentle and careful
The needle for the anesthetic is uncomfortable but not painful. When the anesthetic works, you'll feel pressure but no pain. Stay calm and don't be afraid to tell the dentist if you feel the anesthetic hasn't worked enough yet. Remember that it is surgery and it will knock you for six; you'll feel a bit groggy for the rest of the day. If you do exactly as the dentist asks of you and you're careful until it's healed, you'll have no problems.
Good luck dude.
Lucky for me I will be under GAZiggyStar wrote:WTF? Sian's story above is scary!
Don't you guys get it done in hospital? I was totally knocked out. Fuck getting it done in the chair. I can understand maybe getting one done....not 4!!
EDIT: Just read the post above....yes you are going to hospital. It's not scary, it's thoroughly British and 'character building'
I was supposed to have mine done under GA as the jaw infection was that bad but I went to see a consultant Orthodontist (who specialises in 'difficult' extractions, apparently) and he said he'd whip 'em out there and then! I nearly shit a brick. I completely wasn't prepared and he was brutal... They're gone now though and i've not had tooth ache or a problem with my mouth since!
Clairack is right, in the UK they try to avoid using GA as much as they can. The NHS is famous for saving money: No GA = no aftercare, no extra staff, drugs or machinery. I literally had a nurse with a suction tube and the orthodontist with a big chuffin' needle in the room. nice and cheap, the way the government like it
I agree with ZS; be very careful sucking anything! The blood clots that are supposed to be there can be sucked out, causing dry socket... and that my friend, is absolute agony.
oh and don't eat food that could potentially get into the wounds. It's bloody hell to get it out all the time. :roll:Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

Just had another thought - can't remember if anyone else mentioned it. Salt water - it's great for healing and helping keep infections out. Boil some water, chuck a big handful of salt in, let it cool and use as a mouthwash.
Also hope you don't completely crap yourself after reading the thread. If you are feeling rather shakey now, go to your local health food shop and get some calming down stuff alternatively ask if anyone has any valium.
Good luck.
p.s. I'm having 2 toenails off in the spring which I'm not looking forward to but it's better to get it done than have the pain<a href="http://s952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/catkinson_2009/?action=view¤t=domo.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i952.photobucket.com/albums/ae8/catkinson_2009/domo.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>0 -
I know I am being a Huge Nancy...but man...this sounds terrible
Never heard of Dry Sockets. Had no idea about sucking blood clots.
I don't know what I was trying to accomplish by starting a thread. You are all (as always) friendly and all, but still nervous.

One more question...
I have to give a very important presentation to our VP and his staff on Monday afternoon.
I am getting this done on Thurs at 8am, so I have almost 4 full days of recovery before Monday's meeting.
What are the chances of being OK for that presentation?0 -

I got all four out a couple years ago... I got knocked out for the procedure and it wasn't that bad. I can imagine that actually hearing them work would be horrible... so I hope your doc gives you the option of being put out. I don't remember any of it. I slept a lot and just relaxed in a vicodin induced coma for about 5 days...then was back to my old self. Just don't try to eat anything too serious right after surgery... I kept getting chunks of food stuck in my cavities.
Never got dry sockets though... I had a pretty easy road, no big problems.

Dry sockets is basically when there isn't a clot in the gap where the tooth was. The clot needs to be there because the gum fuses over it and then the clot solidifies/calcifies to solve the hole in your jaw. The reason it hurts so much is because (in my case) the infected jaw was exposed.
I had no intention of scaring you! I was just sharing my experience... as i've said, all the suffering was my fault for leaving it so long to get sorted anyways. No one to blame but my own stupid self
You're having a GA, you'll be fine

it's been 25 years but i had all 4 pulled...general anesthesia i think...cotton packing for a couple days, lots of ice cream and no drugs stronger than tylenol
i couldn't imagine getting them pulled now...what a pain in the ass...or mouth in this case0 -
Good luck with it. Mine went relatively easy except for the last one that was growing on an angle so half the top was on the next tooth. He has to cut it in half, I felt the nerve get cut, it was pretty rough.
They gave me some Tylenol 3 with Codeine for the pain, it didn't do anything really. It was still painful a week after, I had one pill left and started wanting more of it so I decided to not take the last one or get another prescription.0 -
The first day after I was fine.. I found the worst day was day 5. I was able to play guitar and sing on day 3 in front of the school (having said that, I was hopped up on any drug they gave me).Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. I had mine pulled earlier this year. All mine were impacted and one was in my nasal cavity. I had mine done on a Thursday morning and I was back at work on Monday. The paid wasn't too bad but the holes in my mouth were massive and I couldn't eat solid food for about 4 weeks. The doctor said this was b/c I waited about 10 years too long to have mine taken out. The good side to this, I lost 15 lbs0
-
i had all 4 taken out at the same time, wasn't so bad. being completely knocked out and vicodin after made a difference i'm sure! good luck and take it easy and rest well0
