All 4 Wisdom Teeth at once

On Thursday morning, I am getting all 4 wisdom teeth pulled. 2 are impacted, and 1 is "fused"into my nasal cavity.

I know it's going to be bad when the Surgeon says I will experience "a great deal of discomfort". :o

Wish me luck. I know I am being a huge wuss, but I am really nervous.

A big Good Luck, I've had wisdom teeth out and it isn't fun (mind you I never think a trip to the dentist is fun).

I don't know if they have Bach's Rescue Remedy over there, but I take it before I go for big things at the dentist, and I think it helps keep me a little calmer.

Will be thinking about you and sending positive thoughts. :D
  • friend of mine had that done early fall. about two weeks of annoying complaints from him. Waaaaah I can't eat solid foods waaaaaaah!

    Good luck.

Had 1 pulled about 10 years ago, and 9 years ago the last piece of it finally worked it's way up and out of my skin/mouth.

    That sucked.

I had two pulled, and didn't feel a thing, but I had PJ on in the background and focused on that, no pain.
Mr Dentist Man reckoned I was the perfect patient......yea, I bet he says that to all the girls.
    You will be fine. :D

I had all 4 pulled under GA about 7 years ago. It's not that bad. I went home from hospital and we had friends over that night. Sure I wasn't talking much but I was fine. I have a high pain threshold though and recover well and very quickly from being knocked out. I don't think I even took anything for the pain. Maybe for a day or two max.

I ate the same brand of soup for a week and a half....now I can't stand the taste of it. :|

I had my bottom two pulled last year, both were impacted, broken and rotten. He had to remove them in pieces bit by bit from my jaw with a big hook type thing... I'd never heard my own jaw crack before that day :(
The actual proceedure wasn't painful on the left because the anesthetic had kicked in after the FOURTH dose... that was also after he'd done the right side with one little dose of anesthetic. I went through the ceiling with the pain. It was my own fault though, I had let my teeth get that bad and I had such a bad infection in my actual jaw bone that if he hadn't removed them then, it could've given me blood poisoning within a month. I then went on to get something called 'dry-socket' where the wounds didn't clot and I had to have further painful proceedures to solve that. Again, my own fault as I was over zealous and rough with the aftercare... even though the dentist told me to be gentle and careful

The needle for the anesthetic is uncomfortable but not painful. When the anesthetic works, you'll feel pressure but no pain. Stay calm and don't be afraid to tell the dentist if you feel the anesthetic hasn't worked enough yet. Remember that it is surgery and it will knock you for six; you'll feel a bit groggy for the rest of the day. If you do exactly as the dentist asks of you and you're careful until it's healed, you'll have no problems.

    Good luck dude.

Over here, they tend to do as much as they can under local rather than general and in the dentist practice more often than not. Luckily they gave me a general for my gall bladder removal and I was in hospital :D

I had mine done when I was in the Navy about 8 years ago. I was awake for it with a few shots of novacaine in each gum. Very painful even with novocaine. The dentist said I might feel a little pressure as he jammed the device down my gum and under the tooth. The pressure was intense but then the teeth were out. One had to be cracked and pulled out in pieces. Very weird to hear your tooth crack but not feel it. I had dissolvable stitches which went away in about a week. The worst part is after when you get back to solid foods and the craters that are there. After every meal you have to swish with water to get all the food out. As a recommendation that worked for me in the days after surgery, try the old people drink Ensure. It it like a milk shake in a can. It comes in Vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. Very good. Good luck and be glad your under GA, I think it's easier that way.

  • Good luck buddy. I had all 4 of mine done when I was 18. The bottom two were impacted also. I had them done in the Dentist's office with just freezing. I had myself really worked up about it, and it turned out it wasn't that bad. Soft foods for a couple days, milkshakes and slurpees. Just a helpful hint though, even if you don't feel much pain in the beginning, take your scheduled pain meds. The last thing you want is for the pain to get ahead of you. That sucks (learned that after I had major foot/feet surgery a few years ago). Don't try and be a tough guy, they give you pain meds for a reason. Fingers crossed for ya...let us know how it goes! :D

I would not worry, its differnt for everyone- I had all four done at once- 2 cut out, 2 pulled I think. I was sore for maybe a day. I thought the worst part was not being able to have solid food for a couple days.

I had all 4 of mine cut out when I was 18...I'm really small and got very weak afterwards because all I did was sleep and wouldn't eat, that was really the only problem I had

Good luck, I'm sure you'll make out fine

i had all 4 done...wasn't that bad. just at scrambled eggs and milkshakes for a couple of days and try not to get dry socket. lol the night after i got them out my friend convinced me to go out and drink by saying "dude the alcohol will clean out the sockets and keep you from getting an infection".
  • pandorapandora Posts: 21,855
me too, all four gosh like a lifetime ago, its not real bad especially in the big scheme of things- you'll make it through just fine- just be sure to follow Doc's directions after- no dry socket for you!

It will be hard to open your mouth for a while but don't drink with a straw! You may suck out your blood clots and you definitely don't want that!!

And make sure your holes don't get bits of food in them and get infected. For quite a while after the operation I had food getting caught in my holes which I would always try to feel with my tongue. So annoying. My doctor gave me this massive syringe to use to lightly spray water into the holes to dislodge any stuck food. Flush that shit straight out! Sounds gross, I know....because it was! :?

I had all 4 removed right before my 18th birthday...the anesthesia was really weird...I woke up crying! :o  :lol:

I went home and passed out, when i woke up the pain was really intense, but I had a full prescription of hydrocodone...soon after the pain was something of the past and I was quite loopy. Did a lot of sleeping. I woke up one morning with one side swollen and I thought it had got infected but I just kept taking my antibiotics and it went away.

    You'll be okay...the drugs are fun. 8-)

DO NOT try and clean the wounds by hand. Follow every instruction they give you. If you're a smoker, don't smoke.

    Best of luck. :)

 It's not scary, it's thoroughly British and 'character building' ;)

I was supposed to have mine done under GA as the jaw infection was that bad but I went to see a consultant Orthodontist (who specialises in 'difficult' extractions, apparently) and he said he'd whip 'em out there and then! I nearly shit a brick. I completely wasn't prepared and he was brutal... They're gone now though and i've not had tooth ache or a problem with my mouth since! :D

Clairack is right, in the UK they try to avoid using GA as much as they can. The NHS is famous for saving money: No GA = no aftercare, no extra staff, drugs or machinery. I literally had a nurse with a suction tube and the orthodontist with a big chuffin' needle in the room. nice and cheap, the way the government like it  ;)

I agree with ZS; be very careful sucking anything! The blood clots that are supposed to be there can be sucked out, causing dry socket... and that my friend, is absolute agony.

oh and don't eat food that could potentially get into the wounds. It's bloody hell to get it out all the time.

Just had another thought - can't remember if anyone else mentioned it. Salt water - it's great for healing and helping keep infections out. Boil some water, chuck a big handful of salt in, let it cool and use as a mouthwash.

Also hope you don't completely crap yourself after reading the thread. If you are feeling rather shakey now, go to your local health food shop and get some calming down stuff alternatively ask if anyone has any valium.

    Good luck.

p.s. I'm having 2 toenails off in the spring which I'm not looking forward to but it's better to get it done than have the pain :D

    One more question...

I have to give a very important presentation to our VP and his staff on Monday afternoon.

I am getting this done on Thurs at 8am, so I have almost 4 full days of recovery before Monday's meeting.

What are the chances of being OK for that presentation?
