Why is there no outrage here??

I know of no one in favor of this idiotic health care legislation that is being passed, I mean no one on the left or the right. Yet our government is going into overdrive trying to rush this through and get it passed as soon as possible, completely ignoring their constituents. It's pretty obvious that the biggest benefactor in all of this will be the huge insurance companies. Why is there no outrage that the Democrats are pushing this through? Can you imagine the uproar if this had been a Republican move, and the accusations of them doing this to benefit the insurance industry?

Maybe I'm reading the highlights of this bill wrong, but does anyone know of anything good that comes out of it?

well ... there are several viewpoints on here:

    1. the right seem united to be against the bill and they have been expressing outrage from the get-go
    2. the left have also been very skeptical of the bill and have posted threads about it
    3. the moderates who voted for obama have for the most part given him the benefit of the doubt and are prepared to wait and see how it plays out

Well, as for "ignoring constituents", as I recall Obama on the presidential trail talked quite a bit about the need for health care reform. The "constituents" voted him in, and should then be getting by and large what they wanted. Others didn't vote for him, but were in the minority.

That any bill must be watered down in insane partisan filibuster/senate sessions is just how you're set up I suppose. And the tone and temperature has been quite frankly surreal to watch from abroad. Death panels? Obama = Hitler for wanting health care reform? *shakes head*

As for what the bill ended up as, I understand that it's a dirty compromise that reduces companies' options in turning people away for preexisting conditions, but that the privates get to keep running it. I also heard talk of a public option of sorts coming into play in 2015 or something.

As it looks from far away, that's just about what Obama could get through since he has to have some republicans on board to avoid the filibuster. That he got anything at all through counts in his favour I'd say.

    Peace

Spot on. I guess that's what I don't understand, if both the right and left are even slightly standing together on this, why would they still be so adamant about pushing it through?
  • I'm told I have a pretty good insurance through my company. Over the past 3 years my company has paid well over 20 grand in premiums. I never go to the doctor. I had one $11,000 surgery last month and my insurance paid less than 30%. Insuance companies are a joke. Insurance is a joke. They are pretty much like the mafia was 80 years ago... should be fairly obvious why ...
  • Because they, ( Reid,Pelosi,Dodd, ect. ) think they know what's best, when in fact they don't and the majority of americans do not want this bill to pass. The democrats are going to loose a lot of seats come next November yet they don't seem to care or think that they will. Every study shows that this is going to raise premiums, and raise taxes.
Not to mention all of the strong arming and bribes that the democrats have been doing. That in it self is sickening to me,and not to mention this whole damn thing is un-constituional.

Can anybody name ONE ? JUST ONE, domestic government program thats not a complete cluster fuck ? As far as I know there are'nt any. So why does anybody in their right mind think that this is going to be any different ?

Why would I be happy about higher premiums and higher taxes ? I just want to see some fiscal responsibility and common sense coming from the people we elected. It doesn't really matter to me which party they belong to.

You're right, they will lose their power in 2010, and they don't seem to be a bit worried about it either. Unfortunately, the Republicans are just as corrupt, if not more so in some regards. I don't know, this country just seems to be approaching a tipping point.

I am so glad that you did, I always wondering why smokers were allowed to do this. The second fine seems awfully high, if is was for a cigarette but I would definitely appeal that under the constitutionality of the fine. seems like a punishment that does not fit the crime

You asked "why is there no outrage HERE"? HERE being the operative word. Probably 90% of the people on NonMT are hardcore liberals that believe Obama can do no wrong. HOPE and CHANGE.... HOPE we can CHANGE America into a socialists country. YES WE CAN! Kill Capitalism and private sectors. How's all that hope and change working for ya?
  • Obama wants something to point to for his "legacy". This is all about control of people and taking away our freedoms. Too many people are ok with the notion of someone else paying for their benefits. Where was the transparency that was promised, all we got were closed door meetings. And what about all the "sweetheart" deals that were made to pay off senators to go along with this like Nebraska got? This all stinks. Obama and Rohm are nothing but Chicago thugs, bullying people to get their way. :x

sorry to impose on the anti-obama wank fest, but you all know you can get your daily outrage on fox news, right? there are plenty of outraged folks on there.

for the record there are plenty of liberals who are angry and feel like they were used to get the man elected and then tossed aside once in office. i have felt like that before on a few occasions.

my outrage lies not so much with obama, but with how 2 senators can derail and dictate what the other 98 of them vote on.

also, for the record, obama is a centrist, so how can you guys be here bashing him for being liberal? i am a liberal, and obama is not one of us. when moveon.org is complaining about you, you are not a liberal.

i think it speaks volumes of how informed our people are when somebody in this thread referred to "fiscal responsibility" as "physical responsibility".

What ? You mean you don't want our elected officials to take care of themselves ? You would rather they just spend our tax dollars and not listen to what their constituents expect from them ? And you call your self a liberal ?

Exactly. I'm liberal but independent politically and Obama is not very liberal. I'm in the middle on this reform. I don't like everything that this bill includes, but the fact that there are major changes happening is a good thing. It means reform is taking shape. You can't go from the bottom rung of health care to the top with one big change, these things take time. I for one am patient and willing to see what becomes of this.

every poll i have seen says that americans want health insurance reform and greater than 60% want a public option or single payor. i am for single payor so in my opinion this senate bill goes nowhere near far enough. maybe we can get the house bill passed which has a public option. by the way, i do not get your reply. if it was sarcastic it makes no sense, and you trying to play off your comment about "physical responsibility" makes you look silly.

why don't you offer a suggestion on how to fix this other than your party line of "NO NO NO WAHHH!!!!"

I guess some of these are considered gov't offices and not technically "programs", but off the top of my head, these seem to not be complete cluster fucks:

    Student Financial Aid
    National Weather Service
    Small Business Administration
    ATF
    National Park System
    Coast Guard
    Copyright Office

there are plenty of things to not like about Obama but the things you are railing against make absolute no sense - he is nowhere close to being a socialist - if anything he's boosting capitalism and the private sector ...

seriously, partisanship is killing democracy - if people don't pay attention and just listen to the garbage coming out of some PR firm - nothing is ever gonna change ...

blackredyellow - Excellent list. I would add the National Guard to that list (why do conservatives hate our troops?!?!). I personally love my post office (College Park, FL). They are very fast and always helpful. I guess other people do not have good experiences with their post offices. I would argue that our National Park service is the envy of the world. Don't forget that a lot of the facilities at National Parks were built by the CCC. That was part of FDR's New Deal.

prfctlfts - he named 9 programs. You challenged him to name one. Care to comment? BTW - please tell me you are an ACR and not an alumnus.

triumphant angel - I never heard that story about Nugent before, but I hope it is true. He is such a scumbag, it doesn't surprise me at all. Do you know where I could verify that?
