Is the winner automatically crowned the Rose Bowl winner over Ohio State?
i wish this wasn't true, but it probably is. i think i saw on espn that no team in the big ten has beaten a top-20 ranked opponent in like 3-4 seasons. that's so pathetic it's not even funny. the buckeyes better bring it... twice in a row now they looked like they might have turned things around and could hang with the big dogs, only to let usc and texas both drive to winning touchdowns with less than 2 minutes left in the game. i don't know how many more national embarrassments this team can take.

Was that statement of crappy Big Ten play in regards to bowl games? Or regular season too??
I can't believe that the Big Ten is THAT far behind in regular season games.

regular season and bowl games. penn state never plays anybody. michigan hasnt beaten anyone good out of conference in a while. a lot of mid-big ten teams came close. iowa won their bowl game last season, but i dont think the opponent was top 20. osu lost to usc twice, plus 3 straight bcs games. usc dominated psu and illinois in the rose bowl. the list goes on. they've been embarrassing in out of conference play against ranked teams for years now.
Was a great team. Oregon should make quick work of Ohio State, they can't run with the ducks.
It will be interesting to see. The question isnt osu running with the ducks, it's osu running period. their defense is good enough to keep them in the game, but the osu offense needs to keep up early on. if they fall behind by 2 scores, the game is over.

Oregon scores about 7 more per game than the buckeyes but gives up about 12 more per game.
i don't see losing to usc (this year), tx, or lsu as embaresmments. the bucks were in all three of those games. FL and USC (last year) were.

the individual games themselves may not have been, but it's the fact that it puts together a string of 5 straight losses to ranked ooc opponents. osu owns the big ten, but they cannot beat the big guys.

We usually only get to beat up on Michigan and Purdue

as i recall, purdue came damn close to knocking you guys off this season too
if oregon comes in expecting as easy of an opponent as michigan, they're going to be in for a very unpleasant surprise.

remember last year when the high powered Texas offense that scored 55 points a game played the Buckeyes defense? Expect the same type of game. Oregon can't win unless they score in the 30's and I don't see how they can get to that number.

and the reason Ohio State lost the games to Florida and USC had mostly to do with offensive line play which caused turnovers and horrid field position. Same could be said for LSU to a lesser extent. The USC game this year was lost because they gave up a sack late in the 4th quarter, taking them out of FG range. The USC game last year was lost because they couldn't block anyone and Boeckman is slow, inaccurate and fumble prone. The Florida game was lost because our two offensive tackles failed to touch Brandon Spikes at all for 4 quarters.
From what I have seen,Oregon doesn't have that kind of pass rush.

From what I see all those mistakes add up to loses for OSU. Oregon can easily put up 30, think they did it in a half more than once this year. Buckeyes will be tripping over themselves trying to figure out who has the ball.
Oh, and did you know, you can't spell C_CK__CKER without OSU!

I would think part of the Florida loss is also that the their offense did whatever they wanted most of the game. Same with LSU and USC last year to an extent. It wasn't just the OSU offensive line. OSU could have beat USC this year, though.
The rose bowl this year has the potential to be a very good game. I think it will be fairly high scoring.

They could do whatever they wanted in part because the Ohio State defense was on the field the whole game during both of those games because the offense went 3 and out every drive
The Florida game was 41 minutes to 19 minutes time of possession

can't take a team that loses to Boise State seriously, I'll have to be proven wrong but if Boise State can shut down Oregon, the best defense in college football can. Teams can't run against Ohio State. Oregon will need to pass to win

sure they can, the same way texas still won despite only scoring in the 20s... becos the buckeye offense is so inept they'll be lucky to reach 20 points, as they were against texas.
can't take a team that loses to Boise State seriously, I'll have to be proven wrong but if Boise State can shut down Oregon, the best defense in college football can. Teams can't run against Ohio State. Oregon will need to pass to win
Are you serious? I mean, I'm a Buckeye fan but we lost to fucking Purdue, and you're going to give Oregon shit for losing to BSU, who has destroyed everyone they've played, including teams like Oklahoma, Oregon, and Utah, for basically 3 straight seasons. A loss to BSU is a helluva lot more respectable than the debacle in Lafayette.
And for the record, BSU and Cinci would score so much on OSU it wouldn't be funny.
Until Tressel hires someone to run a real aggressive offense, they will always be on the outisde looking in at elite teams. They lost all those big, close games becos Tressel thinks you can sit back once you've got a 2 point lead and hope that elite offenses won't score. He's wrong, and everyone they've played has shown it. If Iowa was coached by anyone other than an even more conservative coach than Tressel, the Buckeyes would've lost that game too with their lazy contentment with less than one touchdown leads. He has no drive to put teams away, and so he keeps teams they should have beat in the game longer than they should have been.

Best defense in college? Maybe on paper against a weak Big 10. And I am a big 10 fan, and as much as I hate OSU, I agree OSU has a pretty good defense, but not better than Florida, Alabama ,and South Carolina to name a few. I would not look past teams like Boise, Utah or TCU, I bet they could not only give OSU a run for thier money, but could beat them. See Oklahoma and Alabama in years past.

Tressel didn't sit on his lead last year vs Texas just holding onto the ball, he was throwing Pryor out at WR, switching QB's in the middle of the series and putting Ohio State in great position to win the game. The reason they lost it was because of a blown coverage by a guy who has blown so many of them he lost his starting position as a senior. Tressel is fine, and he won't be the reason Ohio State may lose the Rose Bowl.
I am fully aware we lost to Purdue, but we didn't lose in a way that Oregon may beat us. Purdue beat us in a way that is Oregon's weakness. I'm sure you watched the game so you know what I'm talking about. Oregon depends on the running game to fuel their offense as they are 7th in the country at rushing, while Ohio State is 5th in the country against the run. They are #2 against the run against rushes outside tackles. So Ohio State's biggest strength is stopping what Oregon needs to win.
The reason Ohio State lost to Purdue is 1) because of 5 turnovers, 2) Purdue is one of the top spread passing teams in the country in which their system is designed to eliminate Ohio State's biggest asset: the defensive pass rush. Purdue's game plan is to pass 50-55 times a game to recievers on 3-8 yard routs which doesn't allow the defensive pass rush time to get to the QB. Purdue ran a perfect gameplan to beat Ohio State.Purdue ran for a total of 20 yards in that win.
So, Oregon and Purdue are very different. If they want Massoli to pass 55 times to beat Ohio State, I like Ohio State's chances. Oregon has rushed for over 200 yards in every game they have played other than Boise. I'll bet anything you want they don't rush for 150 on Ohio State
can't take a team that loses to Boise State seriously, I'll have to be proven wrong but if Boise State can shut down Oregon, the best defense in college football can. Teams can't run against Ohio State. Oregon will need to pass to win

Utah beat a deflated Alabama team that had no interest playing in a Sugar Bowl after they lost their chance at a BCS title, while Utah was playing their Super Bowl. Big difference. The same thing will happen this year if Alabama loses Saturday. Hard to get a team to be focused when their dreams are crushed, while it's easy to get a team ready when they are fighting to prove themselves.
