But the reality for the rest of baseball is far more grim, for the signing of Cole isn’t a blast from the past, but an embodiment of the game’s worst fears. The Yankees are well-run, well-heeled and well-schooled in the art of reeling in the big fish. And as a result, the best pitcher in the game joins a team that will be favored to win the World Series. It happened not because of impulse or short-sighted thinking, but because a calculated process rooted in data led the Yankees to a clear conclusion.

I look forward to watching one of the richest franchises in the game cut payroll and get rid of one of the best home grown players in the game, all in the name of saving money.

If they trade Betts, its not in the name of saving money, its because he won't sign an extension and is set on going to free agency. They are trying to deal Astro's Dad in order to wave more cash at Mookie, but he basically is sticking to the plan of becoming a FA after next season.

There is absolutely no reason, free agency or not, that Betts should not play for the Red Sox, unless he wants out. The team is a year off winning a world series and he is an MVP player. It makes no sense.
He's very tight lipped, but has basically made it clear he wants to go to free agency and maximize his value. Some speculate he wants to play closer to home (which is Tennessee), so Atlanta could be a landing spot. He hasn't said anything about where he wants to play, just has turned down every extension offer (turned down 8 yrs and $200Mil prior to 2017 season when he was not yet arbitration eligible and played that year for 950K) and all his quotes about the business side of things point to becoming a FA no matter where he is playing at end of next season.

Players come and go, particularly in MLB. Hardly anyone starts and ends with the same team anymore. Shame really but its a business and players go where the cash is. I understand and accept it. Can you accept the Yankees falling short next year?

So bizarre. They had no interest whatsoever in him. He had a horrendous year and never got in the groove after coming back, but I still don’t really get it
I was listening to something today that said the Yankees and him were just kinda disconnected this year. He was away from the team so much with the injury, and when he got back he never really gelled with the players like he did in the past. I don’t know though. At the same time, maybe Gleyber is just much better and like $13 million cheaper and that was the decision.

He was. He had 3 great years then he got hurt in the 2018 playoffs, had tommy John and never got consistent this year. Had some huge hits this season, grand slam in the playoffs included. it is very strange they weren’t interested in him at all
The Yankees provided Cole one of their favorite toys: a 30-pound-ish contraption shaped like home plate with a giant interlocking “NY” that when opened reveals a facsimile of Yankee Stadium, with an iPad in the middle that contains pretty much every question you would have about the franchise — from breakdowns of all 27 championship teams to where to live and have your kids go to school, etc. Again, Cole and his wife were impressed.

if we get 6 good years, I’ll take it
sanchez gets hot 30% of year, rest is ugly....not happening
Green, otto, britton, Chapman, should def bring back Betances but kinda doubt it.
djlm, andujar, Torres, judge, Stanton, Gary, voit (maybe), Gardner. I think they need more infield depth but we’ll see.
Fuuuuuucking stacked
