Come on man...this place has a soul. All of the concerts, championships, the Rocky statue stood in front of it from '82 to '06, Dr. J, Moses, Barkley, the Flyers of the late '70s and early '80s, the Christian Laettner shot in '92. This place is LOUD! It holds about 19k but it feels like a small venue. The sound is AMAZING. You can't even come close to the sound quality in any other arena in the nation.

Trust me, it's a special place. Ask anyone on this board who was there in '03 when PJ played. Absolutely legendary.

Nope - not even close, but it's more intimate so I prefer it to the Garden.

It does have a great history though: Elvis, Pavarotti, Sinatra and the Rat Pack, the Doors, the Who, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie, and many, many more.

The Grateful Dead, Billy Joel and Springsteen have banners hanging from the ceiling commemorating over 40 plus sell outs there.

And also was the loudest crowd out of 48 PJ shows I've been to so I'm looking forward to the run.

Not anymore... a friend of mine went to the Bruce concert and said that only Bruce's is still there. That might even be gone by the time PJ comes....

Honestly though, as far as sporting events goes, if you go into the Wach Center and then walk into the Spectrum, the place is pretty outdated. Sad to see it go, but can't wait for what's coming in it's place.

It's basically the Wachovia centers little brother... So other than the fact that its musically historic and its a smaller arena than most , philly just brings a great energy... so hope this answers the original poster's questions

soooo basically it is really only a big deal for people that live there....which explains why it means nothing to me?

    Yes Yes
Tons of bands have played there.

    More importantly,
Pearl Jam is playing there 4 times starting in one week
And that is why its important to me.
Seen PJ 21 times live from 1994-2019

I'm biased since I'm from philly, but no, the spectrum isn't MSG. It's close though...the spectrum is an amazing place to see a concert

I think the wachovia center sucks for concerts. I wish they were keeping the spectrum as a concert only venue

Now I've never been to the Spectrum, the Pearl Jam shows will be my first. But I'm sure many Philadelphians will feel the same way us Bostonians did when they closed and tore down the Boston Garden. It holds so many memories for anyone that has/had ever been there.

Eddie said it best: "It will never be like the Garden"

Considering that Jim Dolan is a scumbag, who has presided over the most disgraceful era in Knick history and a Ranger team that was so inept it missed the playoffs for seven straight seasons, the World's Most Famous Arena hype is a little much for me and I'm a New Yorker.

Both places are good places to see a show and though I've never been to the Spectrum, which is hard to believe personally, I'm sure it will be a fine venue for a show.

The sound is GREAT in both arenas. The Spectrum is TO PHILLY what MSG is to NY in regards to history, but it is a much smaller place....I have been to some rocking shows at both, and if you don't walk out feeling the same electric vibrations throughout your body as you get from MSG, then you weren't really there :D Get excited...get...very...excited... :D

Its 1 of the few old classic arenas still standing. All the greats in sports and music have played there. Its legendary when you consider everything that has taken place there.

Not much to new add, as I agree with most folks. But here are my reasons this is gonna be a kickass week for me:

    1. I grew up with the Spectrum. My first concert ever was Fleetwood Mac when I was in fifth grade. I saw REM there in high school. I rocked out to Jimmy Page & Robert Plant ripping through a 20-minute "Kashmir," on my 17h birthday, no less. I became a diehard Flyers fan there. My autographed (Murray Craven and Kjell Samuelsson) painter's cap from a Flyers Wives Fight for Lives Carnival is hanging on a stick behind me right now. I had a basketball game on the court prior to the Sixers one night.
So while MSG is just a quick trip into the city for me now, I'd much rather go to the Spectrum

    2. Someone compared losing the Spectrum to shuttering Boston Gardens. I agree, but also want to add that this is the last of the old arenas/parks in Philly. The Vet (thank god) came down several years ago. And while the Bank and Linc are fantastic venues, they're still new to the scene. (Wachovia Center is just another bland, modern arena)

    3. This will be an insane week in the city/sports complex. Flyers and Sixers games, Eagles/Giants and the World Fuckin' Champions trying to go back-to-back. I might as well pitch a tent starting early Friday.

    4. I'm turning 29 on Saturday, and four nights of PJ seems like a damn fine way to celebrate.

    168 hours and counting! :D
