Why do many of you stand up during the show?

LMFAO - Hey, when did my daughter start posting on my Pearl Jam boards!?!?!?!?!?!

I'm 50 :o (whoa, how did THAT happen?) and my hubby is 53. In '08 we took his daughter (34) and her fiance (35) to one of the MSG shows and after wards they complained about everybody standing as soon as PJ came on and for the whole show. We've been giving them both colossal shite about it ever since.

Stand up and boogie you lazy a$$ youngsters! Just don't knock over my walker!
  • It wasn't the OPERA!!!!!!! I went to a more serious show on Eddie's solo tour in June. It was at a theater, so the environment was a little more serious. However, people still DID stand up on songs they loved. I guess you need to go to those kinds of shows.

God willing, however, Pearl Jam concerts will ALWAYS be characterized by thrilled fans honoring their beloved band with a never-ending standing ovation. If you can't cut it, stay in your car and listen to your ipod.
  • The only pearl jam show i have ever sat at was Benaroya Hall.

  • Man, there are few things more frustrating than paying good money to see a rock n roll show, my favorite band ever Pearl Jam, and everybody in front of me stands up the whole time. Don't get me wrong, I'm a little over 6'2", so I could see over people if I stood too, but I paid so much for the seat I want to enjoy its comforts. Do you people stand at a movie theater? At the ballet? When you pee?

Just sit down already. It would enhance everybody's experience if we could all just take it easy. These PJ concerts can drag on for two hours or more. Do you realize the long term damage you could be risking to the lower joints, ligaments, and tendons of your lower extremities? Don't you get worn out?

The only thing more frustrating than the incessant standing up at rock shows is how some people insist on singing along to the songs. I believe the BAND is being paid to sing, not you. But I digress, somebody covered this already. It would be nice if they would turn the volume down on those speakers. I sat close to them once and boy oh boy were my ears ringing!

how is life at the nursing home these days? :D

i'll have to defend myself a bit here. first of all, several people found it funny. i'm sorry if you are too uptight or completely lacking in a sense of humor. secondly, i was being facetious, not just "trying". do you know what the word means?

Has anyone here ever been at a concert and commanded to sit down by an angry mob? I saw Chris Cornell at the Beacon Theater a few years back and had first row balcony seats. Me and my friend Chaz were sitting until the first notes were played, which was some crazy instrumental jam by Chris' backing band. It was awesome, we stood up and started rockin' out, and heard people behind us screaming-- but it definitely didn't sound like screaming in approval of what was being played. Anyway, Chris comes out and they go into "Let Me Drown," the first track on Supernunkown, and we were loving it-- and continued to rock out. They take a break between songs, and we realize that all of the yelling was from the people behind us, who were making it very clear that they wanted us to sit down-- even to the point of cursing us out, I couldn't believe it was happening, actually. There was every bit of a couple dozen of them. I could understand wanting to sit for when Chris played his mellower solo stuff, but when he's busting out SOUNDGARDEN I can't stand up? It's not like either of us were moshing or being assholes-- we were just minding our own business and moving to the music, and cheering after the songs were over. We tried to ignore them, but they kept it up, and that's when I turned around and said to them, "Are you SERIOUS? It's FUCKIN' SOUNDGARDEN! Chill the fuck out! HOW BOUT YOU STAND UP?" Nope. They keep bitching, so to avoid anything getting too serious, we move to the aisle and try to enjoy it all from there. Of course the ushers give us all sorts of shit, even though we are clearly NOT blocking any aisles or walkways, and tried the lower level aisle. Got pushed out of there as well. It was pretty frustrating. Me and Chuck ended up listening to the next half hour of the show from the bar, before returning to our seats to sit for a while. Then we finally noticed a section where people were standing and went over there for the remainder of the show, as the ushers really just didn't care anymore since it was more than half over.

To me, it's just so natural to stand up when a band is really kickin' ass. Without looking behind me, I would have expected everyone else to be doing the same-- not at this show, for whatever reason. Speaking as someone who plays live music, it's always better to see people moving to your music (especially if you're rockin') rather seeing people seated. Now, if you're playing some psychadelic, tranced-out shit, it's just as cool to see people comatose with their eyes closed as the people who can hardly control themselves!

Dude, if you are into pearl jam like most of us here then you wanna get up and get rockin'.. you arn't sitting down watching a movie...sure you dont have to jump around or whatever if you not into that but even just standing isn't that much of a biggie...

Yeah i get back pains and feet pains when i stand at gigs but never for bands i love as everything just goes out the window when they start.. remember i was starving at rotterdam, but like i said, when they do hit that stage then its showtimeee.

Two suggestions for some of you:

    A) Work on your sarcasm detection. Maybe try hanging out with some teenagers for a weekend or two.

Failing that, B) At least read the entire thread before posting.

I stand, but if everyone else sits down around me, I will sit down too. I just wont be the first to sit.

I will admit though that I take a seat during encore breaks to gather a second wind.
There's Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson......and then everybody else.

first of all, it's bs that people were yelling at you - i mean it's crappy that they would do that to you.

second of all, i think it's great that you have a friend named Chaz. we should all be so lucky.
