Why do many of you stand up during the show?

Man, there are few things more frustrating than paying good money to see a rock n roll show, my favorite band ever Pearl Jam, and everybody in front of me stands up the whole time. Don't get me wrong, I'm a little over 6'2", so I could see over people if I stood too, but I paid so much for the seat I want to enjoy its comforts. Do you people stand at a movie theater? At the ballet? When you pee?

Just sit down already. It would enhance everybody's experience if we could all just take it easy. These PJ concerts can drag on for two hours or more. Do you realize the long term damage you could be risking to the lower joints, ligaments, and tendons of your lower extremities? Don't you get worn out?

The only thing more frustrating than the incessant standing up at rock shows is how some people insist on singing along to the songs. I believe the BAND is being paid to sing, not you. But I digress, somebody covered this already. It would be nice if they would turn the volume down on those speakers. I sat close to them once and boy oh boy were my ears ringing!

  • lol, are you serious? its a rock concert. seats are only there because they were there for something else, you mainly just paid to hear the band in person. or i could answer with another question. Why do many of you sit down during a show? and then complain about the people standing. do you know how weird it would be to be on stage and everyone is just sitting looking up at you like "Entertain me!!"

Here are a few basic rules when going to Pearl Jam concerts

    1. Stay seated: I know its hard to, but you must understand that if you stand during the show you are ruining it for everyone behind you. Dont be "that" guy.
    2. Rock out as hard as you can: people seem to just stand and lounge around during the shows enjoying themselves instead of moshing and losing all control. Well, its simply a must to go all out, dont be "that" guy who just stands around
    3. Dont sing along: When you sing, you ruin the sound of the band for everyone around you. Just be quiet, and then everyone can enjoy the concert, remember they arent there for you, theyre there for everyone!

If you follow these steps, you are sure to please everyone around you no matter how miserable you are!

You know I have a friend Jonathan that sounds just like you. I'm sure he agrees with you. He thinks he's damaged his hearing from standing to close to the speakers at a Whitney Houston concert. I am 6'3 and stand for every show. It's either because I get tired of sitting or I am a megalomaniac. Take your pick

I thought you were serious until your last two sentences!

    Good one.
  • I feel bad now.... not only did I stand up, I was hoping up and down like a fool, singing along loudly, drinking my beer (spilling it while I hop like an idiot) and I didn't even ONCE think about the poor guys behind me... who were hopping around, drinking, smoking and singing like idiots too.

I think the set list would be a lot shorter if Pearl Jam played to a bunch of middle aged yuppies that only want to sit and listen quietly (i am middle aged).

Sounds like some people should just stay home and watch concerts on their LCDs with the surround sound turned on...but not too loud.

I hope this poster was joking... and if he/she is a Ten club ticket holder... they should have their membership revoked! hehehe
  • so as i was typing the post, i said to myself i said, "self, i wonder if one single pearl jam fan will not pick up on this sarcasm. pearl jam fans are a highly intelligent lot. i'm sure they will all see that i made a funny haha at the expense of the no singing thread poster."

i especially was proud of the bit about the ballet and peeing. yes, this was a parody thread of the really equally dumb "no more singing at pearl jam shows" thread.

That's the point when I figured out you were just having fun. :) I guess a lot of people are just tired of reading all the negative whining lately so they were expecting yet another one instead of catching the sarcasm.

Quote from Ed at the Lyric Opera House, Baltimore 6.14.09
"Stand up. Sit Down. Be Quiet. Make noise".

Seriously dude, we stand because we're alive.
And to the guy who doesn't want us to sing...
    We sing because we breathe.

You gotta loosen up. Have a blast!

You know there is 2 sides to every story, you paid good money for your seat, if you choose to sit and be quiet that is your choice, I also paid good money for my seat, I choose to stand, jump and rock the fuck out, AND SING AS LOUD AS I POSSIBLY FUCKING CAN.

just for the record I know you are being sarcastic.
