I wonder if the people that wrote the Bible ever took any drugs? I bet they did. Those people back then were almost permanently off their heads on some psychedelic substance or other.

I can imagine that one dude was out of his gourd on mushrooms while another dude - the scribe - jotted down what he said.

Edit: and then later a bunch of assholes who took themselves seriously decided to build a Church and begin persecuting people and making a load of money, in-between blowing 6 year old's in the back of the cloister.

For the people here who belive in GOD...

Just a couple of questions(which I am sure you have heard before)....simple questions....

Do you believe in the Bible??
Do you believe in the whole "God created the heavens and earth in 7 days"????
Do you believe in the whole "Adam and Eve" thing????
Do you believe in the whole "Moses" thing???
    Noahs Ark really happened????
Do you believe God created us in his own image??????
How the fuck do you explain one celled animals, insects, and then the fucking dinosaurs that roamed the earth for gazillions of years????

How the fuck can the Earth be 4.5 billion years old?? You are telling me GOD created the Earth and the one celled animals first.....Then waited billions of years before he created man?????

I thought he did it all in 6 days....then smoked a joint and watched some football on the 7th day????

I hear these questions a lot especially the "7 days" question. For one, I'm not a fundamentalist Christian which are those who believe the earth is only 10,000 years old. I am a theistic evolutionist where I accept certain aspects of evolution. I think the "7 days" argument is ridiculous because the idea of a "day" is truly man's creation. What would a day be to God?

And I hear this answer alot....

Do you know of a day being anything other than 24 hours??????

Musicismylife, I am an atheist, but the bible still has some good and interesting stories and much to ponder on. Job for example. We read the book of Job as literature in senior english.

i agree, for me, I am wavering. My parents are non practicing christians and I only went to church as a kid for Easter and Christmas. My own relgious views, are sort of buddhist taoist in nature, sort of the idea that god isnt up in the sky, but more in everything and everyone. From a blade of grass, to an oak tree to my dog etc..

But alot of the music I listen to has religion as a backdrop. Iron and Wine often uses Biblical characters in song, Modest Mouse seem to be an atheist band, and Sufjan Steven of course frquently fuses the songs with biblical imagery.

    I am just curious.

I read The God Delusion and thought it was brilliant. So I thought I would get the other side of the argument to, and try reading the Bible. I find the stories I have heard, interesting. Abraham and Isaac, Cain and Abel. Violent but interesting

Wow...when you put it that way, I feel so much more enlightened. I'm not sure which religion preaches "fairies," but I know mine does not.

No, but do you believe that bunny rabbits leave chocolate eggs under your pillow every Easter? :P

...and to answer your question, no, I don't believe in "bunny rabbits leaving chocolate eggs under my pillow every Easter." This has nothing to do with religion or even my religion. The same for Santa Claus. These are merely creations by people who wanted to add something that would engage children.

  • I am interesting in reading it, if for no other reason than to read as someone pointed out, probably the most important and influential book in all human history. Along with that Jesus, whether he exists or existed or is a fable and myth, he certainly, is one of the most important if not THE most important beings ever to have walked or not walked the earth.

I think thats good enough reason to be curious and want to scope it out

I've read the Bible. I can see it as inspiration created at a time when mankind could not resolve the big questions of life. But, God is made out as kind of an asshole in there... especially in the Old Testament. I guess there had to be a reason why people died and crops were hit with locust... God was a pretty convenient scape goat.
The other thing I considered was the history of the Bible. It was in the hands of the Church of Rome for centuries. The modern day version was canonized in 600 A.D. and the populous was pretty illiterate and could not afford the hand copied versons. It was read to the people by the Church. The Church of England was created just so Henry VIII could dump his wife. The American Standard version even changed the Ten Commandments from 'Thou Shalt not Kill' to 'You Shall Not Murder', to make it okay to wage war and support the Death Penalty.
My suggestion would be to read it as literature... both fiction and non-fiction, with an open mind (a.k.a. outside the constraints of organized religion). There are some really beautiful passages found in there.

i see what your saying. I am not planning on going to seminary or going to church.

As I said, for no other reason than to read and understand or try to understand the passages of the bible seems a pretty useful thing to do. The bible, is so often quoted and refered to in everyday speech and in everyday culture.

And as I said, the stuff I have heard about, just in living 25 years on this earth, as a human being in a world that views religion so utterly essential, I think I owe it to myself to just check it out, and that the stuff/stories I have heard people talk about and reference sound really interesting. Adam and Eve and all that.

I already come into reading the bible, as a radical activist, and am fully aware of the many many harmful things religion and the Bible specifically has wrought. I talked about before how back in the day, white racists used the bible and its passages to reaffirm their dominance over blacks, and I assume probably would read some Bible passages while lynching blacks or gathering for a KKK gathering.

All I want to do, is check it out, see what the fuss is about. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe I will hate it, maybe I will find it boring as all get out, but i am curious...
