First time reading Bible questions

I havent actually ever read it. But am interested, just for the heck of it, to give it a look see.
Anyways, obviously their are as many interpretations of every single word or story in the bible as their are people in the world, but is there any basic, summaries, so that once I finish a chapter or whatever that i can double check and see the meaning.
As I said, their are just so many interpretations. You have the Christian fundamentalists who use stories in the bible to teach homophobia and racism and sexism, while on the flip side, that same Bible was used in the Civil Rights movement as strength and courage to rise up, with Jesus's nonviolence inspiring the movement

they should show some respect for themselves by believing in their own capabilities rather than the omnipresence of fairies and big, angry daddy figures in the sky.Jam out with your clam out.0 -
I am a non believer but have read the bible. I dont see how I could have made a informed decision based on what other people tell me so I would say defo read it.
I have no problem with someone choosing to believe and follow a religious path. I choose to follow science but it does mean that I am correct to not believe in god. Only time will tell that one...0 -

Wow...when you put it that way, I feel so much more enlightened. I'm not sure which religion preaches "fairies," but I know mine does not.We are the facilitators of our own creative evolution.--Bill Hicks0 -
Yeah, that's probably a little uncalled for.
And even if you aren't a religious person, there's nothing wrong with reading the Bible. It helps to actually know what it is you're rejecting.everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do0 -

No, but do you believe that bunny rabbits leave chocolate eggs under your pillow every Easter? :P0 -
Forgive me but I am ignorant on this subject. I do not attend church services and haven't for years. I didn't take much from it and haven't found a need for it as an adult. However, what little I do know/understand of it leaves me with the impression that the Bible isn't meant to be read like a novel - begin with page one, read through the end and be done with it. I get the impression it should be read like a Tarrantino film, never in a straight line. Within it are stories applicable to the trials of life and they provide guidance for you through those trials.
If you are that curious, perhaps you should look into services that can help you with the answers you seek.believe it or not, we don't "need" anything. that is only the spoiled brat in us trying to fill some temporary solution to an emptyness that does not exist.

As you reach the age of 5-7...you realize that the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and the Tooth Fairy, are nothing but nonsense....
But yet people will go their entire lives believing in a GOD?????
I just dont get it....Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....0 -

For the people here who believe in GOD...
Just a couple of questions(which I am sure you have heard before)....simple questions....
Do you believe in the Bible??
Do you believe in the whole "God created the heavens and earth in 7 days"????
Do you believe in the whole "Adam and Eve" thing????
Do you believe in the whole "Moses" thing???
Noahs Ark really happened????
Do you believe God created us in his own image??????
How the fuck do you explain one celled animals, insects, and then the fucking dinosaurs that roamed the earth for gazillions of years????
How the fuck can the Earth be 4.5 billion years old?? You are telling me GOD created the Earth and the one celled animals first.....Then waited billions of years before he created man?????
I thought he did it all in 6 days....then smoked a joint and watched some football on the 7th day????Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....0 -
Musicismylife, I am an atheist, but the bible still has some good and interesting stories and much to ponder on. Job for example. We read the book of Job as literature in senior english.R.i.p. Rigoberto Alpizar.
