I havent actually ever read it. But am interested, just for the heck of it, to give it a look see.

Anyways, obviously their are as many interpretations of every single word or story in the bible as their are people in the world, but is there any basic, summaries, so that once I finish a chapter or whatever that i can double check and see the meaning.

As I said, their are just so many interpretations. You have the Christian fundamentalists who use stories in the bible to teach homophobia and racism and sexism, while on the flip side, that same Bible was used in the Civil Rights movement as strength and courage to rise up, with Jesus's nonviolence inspiring the movement

they should show some respect for themselves by believing in their own capabilities rather than the omnipresence of fairies and big, angry daddy figures in the sky.

I am a non believer but have read the bible. I dont see how I could have made a informed decision based on what other people tell me so I would say defo read it.

I have no problem with someone choosing to believe and follow a religious path. I choose to follow science but it does mean that I am correct to not believe in god. Only time will tell that one...

Wow...when you put it that way, I feel so much more enlightened. I'm not sure which religion preaches "fairies," but I know mine does not.

  • Yeah, that's probably a little uncalled for.

And even if you aren't a religious person, there's nothing wrong with reading the Bible. It helps to actually know what it is you're rejecting.

that's quite the blasphemic emoticon you have there. i dont think god would take so kindly to your willy-nilly use of satan's image.

considering that it's the world's best selling book, you'd think they make a Cliff's Notes for it. ;)

Forgive me but I am ignorant on this subject. I do not attend church services and haven't for years. I didn't take much from it and haven't found a need for it as an adult. However, what little I do know/understand of it leaves me with the impression that the Bible isn't meant to be read like a novel - begin with page one, read through the end and be done with it. I get the impression it should be read like a Tarrantino film, never in a straight line. Within it are stories applicable to the trials of life and they provide guidance for you through those trials.

If you are that curious, perhaps you should look into services that can help you with the answers you seek.
believe it or not, we don't "need" anything. that is only the spoiled brat in us trying to fill some temporary solution to an emptyness that does not exist.

    Its funny...isnt it???

As you reach the age of 5-7...you realize that the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and the Tooth Fairy, are nothing but nonsense....

But yet people will go their entire lives believing in a GOD?????

    I just dont get it....

Musicismylife, I am an atheist, but the bible still has some good and interesting stories and much to ponder on. Job for example. We read the book of Job as literature in senior english.

I wonder if the people that wrote the Bible ever took any drugs? I bet they did. Those people back then were almost permanently off their heads on some psychedelic substance or other.

I can imagine that one dude was out of his gourd on mushrooms while another dude - the scribe - jotted down what he said.

Edit: and then later a bunch of assholes who took themselves seriously decided to build a Church and begin persecuting people and making a load of money, in-between blowing 6 year old's in the back of the cloister.

I hear these questions a lot especially the "7 days" question. For one, I'm not a fundamentalist Christian which are those who believe the earth is only 10,000 years old. I am a theistic evolutionist where I accept certain aspects of evolution. I think the "7 days" argument is ridiculous because the idea of a "day" is truly man's creation. What would a day be to God?

i agree, for me, I am wavering. My parents are non practicing christians and I only went to church as a kid for Easter and Christmas. My own relgious views, are sort of buddhist taoist in nature, sort of the idea that god isnt up in the sky, but more in everything and everyone. From a blade of grass, to an oak tree to my dog etc..

But alot of the music I listen to has religion as a backdrop. Iron and Wine often uses Biblical characters in song, Modest Mouse seem to be an atheist band, and Sufjan Steven of course frquently fuses the songs with biblical imagery.

    I am just curious.

I read The God Delusion and thought it was brilliant. So I thought I would get the other side of the argument to, and try reading the Bible. I find the stories I have heard, interesting. Abraham and Isaac, Cain and Abel. Violent but interesting

...and to answer your question, no, I don't believe in "bunny rabbits leaving chocolate eggs under my pillow every Easter." This has nothing to do with religion or even my religion. The same for Santa Claus. These are merely creations by people who wanted to add something that would engage children.

  • I am interesting in reading it, if for no other reason than to read as someone pointed out, probably the most important and influential book in all human history. Along with that Jesus, whether he exists or existed or is a fable and myth, he certainly, is one of the most important if not THE most important beings ever to have walked or not walked the earth.

I think thats good enough reason to be curious and want to scope it out
