My first listen to the album, I called another Pearl Jam fan, and told her we have another "Wishlist" on our hands in "Just Breathe." I called her and told her the same thing after my first listen of "Yield."
I call this song the band's first "wedding song." Yesterday I played the JB for my 58 year mom, who is Not a fan. She really liked the song and was happy to hear that my cover band is learning it.
I teach high school, most kids see Pearl Jam as old farts...sorry folks. I played JB for a very opinionated 17 yr old young lady, and she actually liked it quite a bit.
In order to reach out to the next generation of fans, "Just Breathe" hitting the radio airwaves is a no-brainer and a must.

Why does anyone think Unthought Known would be a good choice for a single? Without question it is easily THE song on the album that would have no shot on radio. The only other songs that would do as poor as UK are Johnny Guitar and The End. Too slow of a builder. No imediate connection lyrically for casual listeners. It just would go no where.
i think exactly the same,i think this song is so powerfull and goes up all the way..the best choise for a single!!!!
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

You called her after Yield and told her "we have another 'Wishlist' on our hands?" That's what it looks like you are saying, but I know that can't be right. Please clarify.
I agree that Just Breathe is an obvious hit. I think I lot of PJ fans have been listening to Pearl Jam for so long that they've lost their ability to judge which Pearl Jam songs will play well with a modern popular audience. Case in point: Many people seem to be calling Force of Nature an ideal single. As tuneful as the song is, it's the kind of thing Pearl Jam has to stay away from. Unlike the rest of Backspacer, it's an extremely wordy song -- packed with lyrics and metaphor. We love it, butt it's the kind of thing that would just make casual listeners roll their eyes and lament that Pearl jam no longer makes songs like "that 'Don't Call Me Daughter" song"
If "Just Breathe" is indeed the next single (something I've basically been demanding since the album came out), I make a bold prediction: It'll be their biggest hit since Last Kiss.
Yeah, young kids do think of the band as a bunch of old farts. I was shocked when I found that out because it had honestly never occurred to me. But even old farts can write a damn good tune...

Nothing that PJ releases will be a "huge" hit anymore. And if JB ends up as their biggest hit since Last Kiss, what song does it beat out? I hope it does fly but I can't see it happening.
1/12/1879, 4/8/1156, 2/6/1977, who gives a shit, ...
I just read on pearljamevolution.com that this is true. I think that is kind of a curve ball move but I guess it doesn't matter what they choose.
cool its a great song
cool ..the best of Backspacer..

Releasing the straight ahead rocker will do no good on Radio over here (U.K), Radio 2 is the most popular radio station and they embrace things like Springsteen as well as poor MOR like Katie Melua, Jamie Cullum, James Blunt & the evil that is Mika.
Just Breathe would be their best chance to crack the UK market outside of Zane Lowe a self confessed PJ fans radio show. I think if this does the business over here it would open the market up to Amongst The Waves or Unthought Known. Forget appealing to the teens over here, you get the late 30's up to 50's etc and you should have it made.

And a damn good album written indeed.
To clerify, I told my friend after my first listen to Yield (I bought it at an old Midnight release) that I knew she would really enjoy "Wishlist" and that I fell for that song Hard on the first listen.
So after my first listen to "Backspacer," I called to tell her we had another "Wishlist" in "Just Breathe."
They are both pretty and positive love songs, and I believe appeal to the common listener of many different formats of radio stations.
The young lady I referenced has everything from country to Jay-Z on her iPod, and she likes givin' me a hard time about my rabid following of Pearl Jam. Her comment bout "Just Breathe" was "that one's pretty good, I like it."
"Unthought Known" is Really growing on me as well. I really enjoy how it starts out quiet and simple and builds to a nice crescendo. Kinda reminds me of a live listen to "Long Road." It would be kewl if they opened with "Unthought Known," I just think reaching out to more fans lies with the release of "Just Breathe."
IMHO? who knows?

never say never when it comes to the music business. I think JB has major potential of being a big hit.

I know some people have mentioned hearing JB on the radio already, but I've been hearing Got Some on the radio here. So that disproves that it means it's the next single, if that's all anyone's going on.
Personally, I was hoping for Got Some to be the next single. But I agree, JB has the potential for mass audience likability.
I like Just Breathe. But, I am sure I am exactly the wrong person to venture a guess on what will be a good PJ single, as I am outa touch with the radio.
I teach painting and drawing at a university. I we listen to music in the classes I teach... I also let my students bring music in. I had a student bring Backspacer in before I received it from the 10C. All that to say, as a whole, my students really dig Just Breathe (sometimes they will play it more than once per class). For what it's worth, they also like Johnny Guitar.
Not that this means it will be a single but I heard "Gonna See My Friend" on ESPN several times today.

What's it matter anyway...we all have the CD...make the next single whatever you see fit...lol...do people still listen to terrestrial radio!?!?
I Know All The Rules But The Rules Do Not Know Me.
saw a advert for pj's backspacers on tv...(uk)..dont know if this is the same as your advert for Target. But the song on the advert are the fixer (1st single) got some and just breath... this is normal the songs that will be singles from whats happened in advertising over here before.
But then again i was shocked to see the advert...infact it was better then "true blood" the program in question. So who is killing all the girls.season 1 final next week..
GOT SOME... like so many have said is the best choice. Just Breathe is the most country I've ever heard PJ, and I don't think it can go very far. It may be good for some select markets, but overall its not a good choice for convincing rock fans to buy the album. Force of Nature would even be a much better choice. It sounds the most "classic" of any PJ song in a long long time, thank you Mike.
