Just Breathe Next Single

It's a great song and a wise choice, but they aren't going to be able to push it on rock stations.. they are going to have to hit more contemporary and even pop stations. Rock stations will laugh at the idea.

I think this could either be a huge mistake or a huge hit. I love the song, but the audience that it will attract is something that I'm not sure of. We already have the album obviously so a straight forward rock song that we were all anticipating, maybe they figure that they already have us. After hearing the entire album several times over I would not have done business the same way they did with the Fixer and then Just Breathe but that's their call. I'm just curious if they are making as much as they can with these choices. That's obviously the goal with Target and the Target commercial. It gives the public a completely different notion of where Pearl Jam is right now than what we know. All I can say is good luck.

It will be a huge hit because it will get play on the Pop/Top 40 kind of stations that don't normally play PJ.

And I know a ton of people who got the Into the Wild soundtrack and had either never heard of Pearl Jam, or lost interest in them years ago.

Just Breathe will appeal to those people.

I humbly disagree. The Green Day song had a good radio friendly hook and catchy lyrics. Though it might be my favourite song on the album, Just Breathe is really depressing and too folky to translate into a big hit. I like the choice however because 5% of the population likes good music and they should have the opportunity to hear this song if they are not a PJ fan. Got Some is the no brainer choice for a single but it still wouldn't put them over the top in terms of popularity in any way, shape or form.

But Just Breathe as a song in and of itself is not depressing.

I have not read through this post...so this may have been brought up already.

Love Just Breath...but where would it get airplay? Not on rock stations...not your typical pop stations...maybe college rock stations??. Not sure its a good choice if PJ wants to keep this train rollin.

Maybe Force of Nature, Got Some (not so sure here either). But...I'm no marketing person either.

Love this album and in The End I don't care...rock on PJ.

exactly. people, unthought known may be a great song - but it's not really radio friendly. females and teens, in general, won't like UK for the same reasons they don't like a lot of the PJ catalogue. the post above lays those reasons out nicely.

Just Breathe is something that has mass appeal on first listen. some of the other songs on the album COULD make good singles (speaking of ATW and Force of Nature), but won't have that first listen AH HA appeal like JB. Got Some and Supersonic would, because they are good up tempo hard rockers.

some of you are out of touch with what popular hit songs sound like. not that that's a bad thing. the point of releasing a single isn't to get us diehards to listen, we already are. they are trying to pick the songs that appeal to people who otherwise wouldn't buy the record.

I did hear Just Breathe twice on the radio yesterday. At work we usually have an adult alternative station playing. They're a little off beat (Neil Young fairly regularly, Small Town, Betterman, Fixer of late) but for the most part pretty standard. They played it around 12:30 and 3:30 when I was in yesterday. Sounds perfect for radio.
I saw this coming and I'm pretty stoked for it. The first time I heard JB last week I thought it could be huge so I'm glad to see it as a single. The guys obviously deserve it and it won't hurt to draw in some new fans.
Admittedly, there might be a large portion of people who will like the single and be disappointed with the sound of the whole record. No big deal.

As to this I think there are quite a few tunes that people who like Just Breathe will dig off the record.

Specifically, Unthought Known, The End, Speed of Sound and perhaps we'll get the Fixer to cross them over to some of the faster stuff.

I am not sure we can call this "official" yet. It hasn't been confirmed -- There's simply been a blurb on a fan site. Wait for the band to make an announcement.

I already heard Just Breathe on the radio.

I think it would be an amazing single...as it is one of, if not the best song on the album.

what about a double a side...with just breath and the end.. that would open up alot of NEW listeners ears..

But does it really matter.we already have all the songs on one great ablum.let the newbies have a sip of what they have been missing from the pearl jam cup.

BTW, I didn't mean that this song would have been great at a funeral because it is depressing, I meant the opposite. I know, sounds weird. I don't mean in general it would be a good funeral song, the song just happened to remind me of my friend.

Why does anyone think Unthought Known would be a good choice for a single? Without question it is easily THE song on the album that would have no shot on radio. The only other songs that would do as poor as UK are Johnny Guitar and The End. Too slow of a builder. No imediate connection lyrically for casual listeners. It just would go no where.

'Amongst the waves' seems like it could play well on radio as a #3 single after 'The Fixer' and 'Just Breathe'. It has a very identifiable hook and easy listening lyric content.
