  • well, to follow the Green Day reference, "Just Breathe" could most definitely hit radio the same way "Time of Your Life" did.

    Could be big.

  • I think it would work well.

Case in point...I went to pick up my girlfriend from work. She was running late so I just chilled outside and waited in the loading zone for her with Backspacer cranked as loud as the stereo would go.

This dude comes walking out of the store and past the car. He must have been 60 or older. I'm listening to Just Breathe and he stops next to the car. As I glance over to see what the weirdo is doing, I can see he is tapping his foot to the rhythm. He leans over and asks me for the name of the song and who is singing it. I turn down the music to tell him and he tells me not to turn it down. He says he has heard the name Pearl Jam before. We listen to the rest of the song and I turn it down. He says he likes the song and that it kinda reminds him of something. I told him it reminds me of Harry Nillson's Everybody's Talkin. He agrees and asks me how I know about Harry Nillson. I point out my handsome mutton chops and tell him I should have been born in the Sixties. We laugh. I tell him that they are selling it at Target and he can even get it on vinyl.

"Vinyl? Do they still make those?"

"The good bands do", says I.

Then it struck him where he knew the name Pearl Jam. "Weren't they on the show on VH1 for the Who?"

"Yes, and they killed it!", says I.

"Yes, they did. Pearl Jam. Hmm."

We finally introduced ourselves and he said good night. I told him to have a good night.

"I will. I'm heading to Target."

Cool ass old dude. I'm glad to spread the love when I can.

I humbly disagree. The Green Day song had a good radio friendly hook and catchy lyrics. Though it might be my favourite song on the album, Just Breathe is really depressing and too folky to translate into a big hit. I like the choice however because 5% of the population likes good music and they should have the opportunity to hear this song if they are not a PJ fan. Got Some is the no brainer choice for a single but it still wouldn't put them over the top in terms of popularity in any way, shape or form.

oops... I realized that I just re-stated CitizenRick's original point...

Anyway, I get what you're saying about the catchy-ness of the Green Day tune - but "Just Breathe" has those ear-candy strings, the harmonies in the "did I say that I need you" part - I wouldn't count it out.

And as douchey as I think the Plain White Ts are, that "Hey There Delilah" song was at least *trying* to be folky, and it worked...

  • Just Breathe is one of the best songs in the album... It is not a rock song, but for sure it feels like a Pearl Jam song, with all the emotions and great lyrics... I think its a great choice for a single because it will show people that Pearl Jam has a wide range of music and not only grunge rock... which is true. And its also "catcthy" and "poppy" enough for radio.

    Great choice!

yes, I know, there are tracks we like better, but this really is the only track I can see being played on alt rock/ rock stations... catchy for general public....

  • i would have gone with Force of Nature! I find it quite catchy!

It would be a perfect third single!
  • Hell I can see Radio 2 in the UK playing this, if they want to break out of the fan base and get this record to a wider audience, then Just Breathe is a great choice.

I know some of you don't give a shit whether this album breaks out or not but the band obviously do and I'd like them to be heard by people other than us, so many say to me are they still together, I thought they'd split up.

They so often fall under the radar here in the UK, maybe over the pond in their native land it isn't so much. Just Breathe is just gorgeous and it's a bit greedy to think us fans should be the only people to experience that.

I have a feeling this album is going to blow up sales wise. Amongst The Waves & Unthought Known have potential to be big hits as well. Got Some, Johnny Guitar or Gonna See My Friend are great great songs but the potential for ATW, UK and especially JB are bigger.

I don't think this is their best album but I do think the commercial potential is at it's highest since Ten was released, I'm past thinking I want this band just for myself, they've been around for such a long time doing their thing I very much doubt commercial success would effect the sound of the next record and Pearl jam will continue doing just what they've done all the time, being a outstanding rock band.
  • The sweetest song on S/T -"Come Back" was not picked as a single and I feel "Just Breathe" wont either.
Bet they will go for "Got Some".

    exactly

    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
  • got some and Unthough known will be great..

  • i can picture it being used on one of those schmalzy tv dramas, and gaining big-time exposure that way. not one of my absolute faves, but i think it will definitely help backspacer sales. here's to that too - the more people that get to buy the album the more people that will be given the blessed priviledge of having pearl jam become a part of their lives.

  • if i was in charge, i'd go:

    1. The Fixer
    2. Just Breathe
    3. Got Some
    4. Either Force of Nature or Supersonic

i know, it's a stretch that they'd even release four, but those are the ones i'd go with, in that order.

i think you'll be right with the first 3 - but i think you're also right in that i don't think they'll get to four; if so, i'd love for it to be amongst the waves or force of nature.

  • I am a long time PJ fan (I drove across country when Ten was out and literally only listened to it the whole way), and I love JB. Love it. It has just totally itself around my brain. It seems like sometimes the too-school-I'm-the REAL-PJ fan's look down their noses at anything that has commercial success. Why?

Each song is personal to the listener. For me it reminds me of a friend of mine who died (also a PJ fan). Would have been great to hear that song at his funeral. Instead the played Celine Dion. WTF. Poor guy must've rolled in his grave at that one.

It is a great song -- there's no doubt about that -- and you do not want to know the details of what I have attached to the song because it is so unbelievably tragic. The song is just not really radio freindly or potentially commercially successful. Regular rock radio stations typically don't play funeral music in regular rotation. Maybe some adult contemporary stations (like the ones that would play Celine Dion music) would pick up on the song but I think that Pearl Jam has the grunge stigma attached to them so it might not fly. We'll see I guess -- I hope that they do release it and I hope that it does great.

You have the right to your own interpretation but I don't see anything tragic in this song. It is beautiful and has a joyous sentiment - Find happiness and peace laying and breathing next to someone you love, alive and in the moment. It is more of a wedding song than a funeral song, IMHO.

I think this could be a great song choice if it gets played on stations like adult contemporary. It has Last Kiss potential.

I wasn't trying to say that the song was tragic but something tragic happened to a friend of mine this week that should never ever happen to a parent of small children and that is what I happened to associate to this song since I have been listening to this album quite a bit this week. To me it sounds like the song is delivered with a tone of regret and that makes it kind of depressing but I still love it -- I don't really think it will be a successful single but maybe I'll be wrong.
