Just Breathe Next Single
I just read on pearljamevolution.com that this is true. I think that is kind of a curve ball move but I guess it doesn't matter what they choose.

i think it does matter. i mean, in a business sense it matters - it's marketing. and Just Breathe, I don't see as a curve at all. not even a slider or a forkball.
just breathe, if it gets promoted properly, could be a huge hit. i think the band has said that one thing they're looking for is to grow the fan base with this record. no song on the record will bring in new fans like JB, IMO. the others will help, but this song is something any music fan could love. hell, i could be fairly unsurprised if it got play on country stations (country these days is just pop music with a twang anyway)
It'll be interseting to see if this gets any run on rock stations. I would've gone with Got Some and then ATW third.
Basically, it has the most potential to succeed across a VARIETY of music listeners, so it is the wisest choice for a single.
Plus, it's a great song...that can't hurt.
“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” - Albert Camus
why do you see it as a terrible choice?
100% correct
Today was my first listen to Backspacer. My 10C disc was cracked when it came in the mail and I had to wait for a new one. So maybe I haven't had time to absorb it. I just don't think it is all that good. I don't think rock radio will care for it. Here in Houston they barely played The Fixer. I can't really see any format loving it. I would pick several other songs first: ATW, Got Some, Unthought Known. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
here's why i think you might be wrong. Just Breathe will appeal to so many people who otherwise would never give two poops about Pearl Jam. Kind of like Last Kiss, not a favorite of the core fans, but major mass appeal. Granted, hardcore PJ fans probably won't love the song, or at least not like the others you mentioned. But if we're talking about picking the song that will appeal to people "fresh blood" outside the core fan base, it's a no brainer. every middle aged female who listens to top 40 will love it, it *could* appeal to the C&W crowd. hard rock stations will probably not play it, but they could.
Just Breathe might be TOO different. Unthought Known would be a big crossover hit too, but would fit more radio formats.
imho
honestly, i disagree wholeheartedly about Unthought Known. I think it's one that we PJ fanatics will love for a long time, but I think it's too slow developing for fickle top 40 fans. Got Some will be a single, for sure. I hope. Yes, definitely more traditional for the rock format.
well, they'll probably get those too. at least Got Some. and Just Breathe may be lame to you, but it's a great song to appeal to folks outside of the fan base. IMHO, of course.

I was actually thinking about Green Day's recent 21 guns. Its being played on our local radio station probably 50 times a day.

Yeah but Just Breathe is much more folksy and not as "Big" sounding. Maybe it will transcend genre's and catch on on all kinds of formats.
Could be big.

Case in point...I went to pick up my girlfriend from work. She was running late so I just chilled outside and waited in the loading zone for her with Backspacer cranked as loud as the stereo would go.
This dude comes walking out of the store and past the car. He must have been 60 or older. I'm listening to Just Breathe and he stops next to the car. As I glance over to see what the weirdo is doing, I can see he is tapping his foot to the rhythm. He leans over and asks me for the name of the song and who is singing it. I turn down the music to tell him and he tells me not to turn it down. He says he has heard the name Pearl Jam before. We listen to the rest of the song and I turn it down. He says he likes the song and that it kinda reminds him of something. I told him it reminds me of Harry Nillson's Everybody's Talkin. He agrees and asks me how I know about Harry Nillson. I point out my handsome mutton chops and tell him I should have been born in the Sixties. We laugh. I tell him that they are selling it at Target and he can even get it on vinyl.
"Vinyl? Do they still make those?"
"The good bands do", says I.
Then it struck him where he knew the name Pearl Jam. "Weren't they on the show on VH1 for the Who?"
"Yes, and they killed it!", says I.
"Yes, they did. Pearl Jam. Hmm."
We finally introduced ourselves and he said good night. I told him to have a good night.
"I will. I'm heading to Target."
Cool ass old dude. I'm glad to spread the love when I can.
oops... I realized that I just re-stated CitizenRick's original point...
Anyway, I get what you're saying about the catchy-ness of the Green Day tune - but "Just Breathe" has those ear-candy strings, the harmonies in the "did I say that I need you" part - I wouldn't count it out.
And as douchey as I think the Plain White Ts are, that "Hey There Delilah" song was at least *trying* to be folky, and it worked...

It would be a perfect third single!
I know some of you don't give a shit whether this album breaks out or not but the band obviously do and I'd like them to be heard by people other than us, so many say to me are they still together, I thought they'd split up.
They so often fall under the radar here in the UK, maybe over the pond in their native land it isn't so much. Just Breathe is just gorgeous and it's a bit greedy to think us fans should be the only people to experience that.
I have a feeling this album is going to blow up sales wise. Amongst The Waves & Unthought Known have potential to be big hits as well. Got Some, Johnny Guitar or Gonna See My Friend are great great songs but the potential for ATW, UK and especially JB are bigger.
I don't think this is their best album but I do think the commercial potential is at it's highest since Ten was released, I'm past thinking I want this band just for myself, they've been around for such a long time doing their thing I very much doubt commercial success would effect the sound of the next record and Pearl jam will continue doing just what they've done all the time, being a outstanding rock band.
