Just Breathe Next Single
I just read on pearljamevolution.com that this is true. I think that is kind of a curve ball move but I guess it doesn't matter what they choose.

i think it does matter. i mean, in a business sense it matters - it's marketing. and Just Breathe, I don't see as a curve at all. not even a slider or a forkball.
just breathe, if it gets promoted properly, could be a huge hit. i think the band has said that one thing they're looking for is to grow the fan base with this record. no song on the record will bring in new fans like JB, IMO. the others will help, but this song is something any music fan could love. hell, i could be fairly unsurprised if it got play on country stations (country these days is just pop music with a twang anyway)0 -
Its good to throw in a different type of song as a single every once in a while0
-
Meh. Should've been Got Some.0
-
I love this song immensley but what format will it play on? I'm not sure it's poppy enough for alt rock stations like my local station live 105. That Green Day song Good riddance (Time of your life) was similar and huge...but it was a lot more poppy.
It'll be interseting to see if this gets any run on rock stations. I would've gone with Got Some and then ATW third."Had my eyes peeled both wide open, and I got a glimpse...of my innocense, got back my inner sence, baby got it...still got it"0 -
if this is true, Backspacer is going to be a huge selling album.“May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine.” - Frank Sinatra0
-
Terrible choice. I don't really know what would be a good choice, though. Maybe Amongst the Waves0
-
Smart move. Nothing on Backspacer is crappy enough to succeed on straight rock stations, but Just Breathe could do very well across several different groups. I can see it appealing to Pop/Top 40 fans, rock fans who like a good ballad, and, as someone said earlier, even possibly country fans.
Basically, it has the most potential to succeed across a VARIETY of music listeners, so it is the wisest choice for a single.
Plus, it's a great song...that can't hurt.Everything has chains...Absolutely nothing's changed. - PJ

why do you see it as a terrible choice?0 -
there are a lot of great songs on the album, but just breathe is not one of them. after all, i heard a whole album full of that song on the into the wild soundtrack.0

Today was my first listen to Backspacer. My 10C disc was cracked when it came in the mail and I had to wait for a new one. So maybe I haven't had time to absorb it. I just don't think it is all that good. I don't think rock radio will care for it. Here in Houston they barely played The Fixer. I can't really see any format loving it. I would pick several other songs first: ATW, Got Some, Unthought Known. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.0 -

here's why i think you might be wrong. Just Breathe will appeal to so many people who otherwise would never give two poops about Pearl Jam. Kind of like Last Kiss, not a favorite of the core fans, but major mass appeal. Granted, hardcore PJ fans probably won't love the song, or at least not like the others you mentioned. But if we're talking about picking the song that will appeal to people "fresh blood" outside the core fan base, it's a no brainer. every middle aged female who listens to top 40 will love it, it *could* appeal to the C&W crowd. hard rock stations will probably not play it, but they could.0 -
It's a great song and could be a huge crossover hit, but unthought known or Got Some would be more suited rock radio formats.
Just Breathe might be TOO different. Unthought Known would be a big crossover hit too, but would fit more radio formats.
imho0 -
lame. radio needs songs like gonna see my friend or got somei have a paper here that entitles me to fast track status0

honestly, i disagree wholeheartedly about Unthought Known. I think it's one that we PJ fanatics will love for a long time, but I think it's too slow developing for fickle top 40 fans. Got Some will be a single, for sure. I hope. Yes, definitely more traditional for the rock format.0 -

well, they'll probably get those too. at least Got Some. and Just Breathe may be lame to you, but it's a great song to appeal to folks outside of the fan base. IMHO, of course.0 -
not saying the song is lame, but its a lame choice for a single imoi have a paper here that entitles me to fast track status0

I was actually thinking about Green Day's recent 21 guns. Its being played on our local radio station probably 50 times a day.I'm Eric.

Yeah but Just Breathe is much more folksy and not as "Big" sounding. Maybe it will transcend genre's and catch on on all kinds of formats.Post edited by CitizenRick on"Had my eyes peeled both wide open, and I got a glimpse...of my innocense, got back my inner sence, baby got it...still got it"0
