LOL this is the 2nd time someone cancelled Baltimore arrangements on me. Now my friend and I are stranded with no place to stay for the Baltimore show on my birthday weekend. Yipee!! I'm sure it'll all work out, but gotta get back to planning. Ugh.

I will be getting my refresher in December. Never thought as a speech therapist, in the schools, that I would be restraining 6 to 10 year old students...

Two years ago, I was called everyday, except 3, to intervene... It makes me sad that this is a necessity these days.

I took it 5-6 years ago and let it lapse for many reasons. I'm not big enough to restrain middle schoolers, I prefer to verbally de-escalate a student, and I didn't have any students that had restraint in their IEPs. Now that I am in the elementary school, physically I can do it, but emotionally I don't want to :( Unfortunately, I have 2 autistic students and one bi-polar student that require it. Today was all about the verbal component and body posture. Our speech therapist is taking it too. So many of the little ones don't have the ability to express themselves through words :(

I hear you, it is emotionally and physically draining. It would be nice if all staff in the schools go through the training, so they know the verbal de-escalation techniques, then fewer restraints would needed. I wish general education staff in my school would be more willing to take some "ownership" of all students. A school needs to be a community where it is everyone's responsibility to provide a safe and productive learning environment for all students. Some days I forget what my "job" is as I am not able to be the speech and language therapist. Still rewarding, just a different environment these days. Good luck with the training! By the way, what do you do?

I teach special ed. This year I have 2 students in third grade and 5 students in fourth grade. We are full inclusion. I agree that more regular ed staff should be trained! Some in my building are going for the training. At my old school, however, none of the regular ed staff would go for it. This new building that I'm in is very supportive and there isn't the big divide between sped and reg ed like I've seen before. Our trainers today talked about how we, as a staff, need to support each other after an incident. How the lead person doing the restraint needs time to process and de-escalate too. That's the first time I have ever heard that! Made me feel even more supported!

My friend and former co-teacher's 5 year old son was just killed by a drunk driver tonight.
    She is in the hospital.
I'm completely at a loss right now.
