There isn't a "white" culture in America, there are several. Which is why it is hard to describe what "white" in this context really means. Except that it used to mean "master" a few decades ago.
I dont see this about not falling into a trap. He was given a flat out opportunity to describe what he thought white culture was. this post has the logic of a 5th grader.
whites have been in the majority for all of american history, so most history is writen from the perspective of a "white" man. most american history that you hear about in school is from a "white" perpective relating to "white people". (on a side note, IMO this is why zinn's people's history of the united states is so great)...up unti well after the civil war blacks were still 3/5 of a person and until 60 years later no women were allowed to vote. they had no power to influence anything, especially history. most times miss america has been white, or not of african descent, most college loans have gone to white kids because many african americans have not had the opportunity to go to college, hence the united negro college fund. these are simply giving the african americans the opportunites they would not have in a country run by a white majority. since the majority would not help them they had to help themselves. if you would ever take a sociology class you might understand that.
the black history month opposition pisses me off, as a white man i can admit that most of what we are taught does not even touch on african american history other than slavery and the civil rights movement. i think it is completely fair to celebrate black history month. who knows, YOU might learn something. let me ask you this, are you opposed to the fact that march is women's history month as well?

Speaking as a white male, I don't really feel like I'm hurting these days at the expense of those damn minorities. I don't often find myself pining for the life of a young black man in urban Cleveland just so I can get those great entitlements they have.

Asian, probably not. American black culture? I think that whole 2-300 years of slavery thing kinda gives black Americans a pretty unified cultural background at this point. It's not like they came over with their families and traditions intact like most other American immigrants. Which is why it makes more sense to talk about black culture, they do have a unique, common heritage in America. White Americans don't really. We tended to bring over intact traditions from Europe. They're slowly being replaced as America begins to develop and define its own "culture" beyond just the melting pot, but it's not well defined enough to be able to talk about it.

Because it means African Americans have a distinct culture. I think you could say the same about Italian-Americans... immigration, crime, etc. Or Irish-American (the Irish were discriminated against in the same way blacks were when they got, minus the slavery). If it were based on skin colour then things would be pretty backward as Asia tends to have more fair skinned people than Europe. so white pride would refer to Europeans. Cos from your specific stand point, if black culture is defined by slavery, then white culture is defined indentured servitude, abolitionism, and of course, owning slaves. Which would mean they would have an equally defined culture. Most whites in America descended from pre-civil war immigrants come from a family of abolitionists and indentured servants, not slave owners. Where slaves were used for farming, namely..Indentured servants were used for building America's infrastructure. One could say their culture bleeds from the buildings..perhaps? Abolitionism played a major role in our founding. It's very much a part of the Constitution. Our founding fathers wanted to end slavery, but understood that to include amendments that could abolish slavery right from the get would end the attempt to found a new nation before it even began because at that time, the majority of the people with any power were against abolishing slavery..Namely the people in the south. so instead they included a section regarding a census for the purpose of representation that would limit the power the south could wield so that one day they could abolish slavery. And of course, then we have the Civil War, and how many whites fought to end slavery...so their history is just as thoroughly weaved into the slavery era as the blacks.
With that said, all of that, to me, is history..not culture. Culture, to me, is how a people are, and live, today. What traditions and customs they share. Their history plays a role in what they culture has shaped up to be, but it does not define it entirely. 'American Culture' I understand. I also understand that American Culture spans the boundaries of race and religion. There are and have been great Americans who were White, Black, Jewish, Irish, Italian, Asian, etc... who have contributed to this all encompassing culture. Freedom and Justice for All... and all that jazz.
I way I see it... those who complain about not having White Pride month or United White College Fund or White Entertainment Television need to be careful what they wish for. It would mean they are the minority and live in a nation that is run by Blacks (or Jews or Hispanics or Arabs) in their everyday endevours. It would mean that they get one month out of 12, on television station out of 1,000 and live in de facto poverty due to lack of opportunity.

Cos from your specific stand point, if black culture is defined by slavery, then white culture is defined indentured servitude, abolitionism, and of course, owning slaves. Which would mean they would have an equally defined culture. Most whites in America descended from pre-civil war immigrants come from a family of abolitionists and indentured servants, not slave owners. Where slaves were used for farming, namely..Indentured servants were used for building America's infrastructure. One could say their culture bleeds from the buildings..perhaps? Abolitionism played a major role in our founding. It's very much a part of the Constitution. Our founding fathers wanted to end slavery, but understood that to include amendments that could abolish slavery right from the get would end the attempt to found a new nation before it even began because at that time, the majority of the people with any power were against abolishing slavery..Namely the people in the south. so instead they included a section regarding a census for the purpose of representation that would limit the power the south could wield so that one day they could abolish slavery. And of course, then we have the Civil War, and how many whites fought to end slavery...so their history is just as thoroughly weaved into the slavery era as the blacks.
With that said, all of that, to me, is history..not culture. Culture, to me, is how a people are, and live, today. What traditions and customs they share. Their history plays a role in what they culture has shaped up to be, but it does not define it entirely. And just the same as the many ignorant examples anyone could come up with to define white culture (gun-toting, God-fearing, Bush-loving, redneck, trailor park), one can just as easily come up with the same ignorant definition for black culture in America (gun toting, God-fearing, Obama-loving, hood rat/banger, ghetto). It's really not a good way to define people. How about we just have a plain ol' American culture. There, very much so, is a very distinct united American culture. If you can't see it, you aren't looking at things from the right perspective..

There isn't a "white" culture in America, there are several. Which is why it is hard to describe what "white" in this context really means. Except that it used to mean "master" a few decades ago.
I dont see this about not falling into a trap. He was given a flat out opportunity to describe what he thought white culture was. Since he doesn't say anything, he comes off like an ass, and it seems that he knows he will get serious heat for it. Refusal to define what one means should always be viewed with suspicion, and always be questioned by any reasonable awake journalist. If a politician says: "In want to give poor families a huge tax break!", and later refuses to define what is considered a "poor family", well.... Than he's full of crap. Quite simple.

whites have been in the majority for all of american history, so most history is writen from the perspective of a "white" man. most american history that you hear about in school is from a "white" perpective relating to "white people". (on a side note, IMO this is why zinn's people's history of the united states is so great)...up unti well after the civil war blacks were still 3/5 of a person and until 60 years later no women were allowed to vote. they had no power to influence anything, especially history. most times miss america has been white, or not of african descent, most college loans have gone to white kids because many african americans have not had the opportunity to go to college, hence the united negro college fund. these are simply giving the african americans the opportunites they would not have in a country run by a white majority. since the majority would not help them they had to help themselves. if you would ever take a sociology class you might understand that.
the black history month opposition pisses me off, as a white man i can admit that most of what we are taught does not even touch on african american history other than slavery and the civil rights movement. i think it is completely fair to celebrate black history month. who knows, YOU might learn something. let me ask you this, are you opposed to the fact that march is women's history month as well?

Glenn Beck is a douche ... But yes, white people have a culture. The point re. different European backgrounds is a good one, and one that applies to ethnic minorities as well. Is it any easier to come up with a blanket definition of Asian culture, or Black culture?
Asian, probably not. American black culture? I think that whole 2-300 years of slavery thing kinda gives black Americans a pretty unified cultural background at this point. It's not like they came over with their families and traditions intact like most other American immigrants. Which is why it makes more sense to talk about black culture, they do have a unique, common heritage in America. White Americans don't really. We tended to bring over intact traditions from Europe. They're slowly being replaced as America begins to develop and define its own "culture" beyond just the melting pot, but it's not well defined enough to be able to talk about it.
Hmmm ... While I see your point (I think), one could (in theory) use the common experience of immigration period as a basis for a common culture in North America. Not sure how this would work in practice, but it is a common thread that ties everyone here together, whether your ancestors came here one generation ago or five. There is an American social fabric, even if it is pluralistic and characterized by a focus on differences at the expense of similarities. I don't know ... I maintain the position that white people in North America have a culture, even if said culture is difficult to "pin down". To be honest, slavery is a common thread in African American culture, historically speaking, but I am not sure how this history means that one group "has a culture" while another does not. Human societies are not possible in the absence of a shared culture.
Because it means African Americans have a distinct culture. I think you could say the same about Italian-Americans... immigration, crime, etc. Or Irish-American (the Irish were discriminated against in the same way blacks were when they got, minus the slavery). Or whatever. But I don't think there is such a thing as just general "white" culture in America. Honestly, the closest we have is the southern, down home, NASCAR/Palin contingent that is devoutly religious, pro-gun, and so forth. My guess is that this is what Glen Beck was referring to and he just realized what a fucking idiot he'd be to actually say that, because that culture is far from uniform and only covers a fraction of white Americans. I have no problem with Black Pride. Just like I have no problem with Irish Pride, Italian Pride, Cockney Pride or any other cultural heritage, nationalistic or otherwise pride. When someone refers to people as 'white' they mean Europeans. If it were based on skin colour then things would be pretty backward as Asia tends to have more fair skinned people than Europe. so white pride would refer to Europeans. But even to say 'European Pride' would be seen as controversial..And if it can be black pride, instead of African pride, then why can't Europeans say white pride? I never quite understood all that mess.....

Is it European culture... without the national boundaries that seperate the different nationalities? Glenn Beck makes these claims... yet, cannot define the basis of it. This is where the confusion comes in. Is he talking about 'American Culture'? Does that include the Jewish, Black, Latino and Asian people who are Americans?

My guess... and pure speculation because i am not Glenn Beck... is 'White Culture' is Anglo-Saxon/caucasian Christian American citizens of European heritage (that don't particularly care for other Europen countries... i.e. hate the French, unless they are Frenceh). 'American Culture' I understand. I also understand that American Culture spans the boundaries of race and religion. There are and have been great Americans who were White, Black, Jewish, Irish, Italian, Asian, etc... who have contributed to this all encompassing culture. Freedom and Justice for All... and all that jazz.
I way I see it... those who complain about not having White Pride month or United White College Fund or White Entertainment Television need to be careful what they wish for. It would mean they are the minority and live in a nation that is run by Blacks (or Jews or Hispanics or Arabs) in their everyday endevours. It would mean that they get one month out of 12, on television station out of 1,000 and live in de facto poverty due to lack of opportunity.
