Lol, you can have ANY song on Backspacer, and I'll take Sleight of Hand."...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."

Metacritic composite ratings (out of 100 for critics; out of 10.0 for fans/listeners):
I assume Backspacer numbers will drop as more and more fans chime in. Most telling is how well it's holding up compared to the number of voters vs., say, Binaural. (law of averages says that the more voters there are, the likelier the number is to drop, and given that Binaural received 21 total votes and just 7.9 speaks volumes).
Backspacer 85 (15 critics) / 9.4 (73 votes)
Pearl Jam (Avocado) 74 (28 critics) / 8.8 (271 votes)
Riot Act - 73 (20 critics) / 8.4 (80 votes)
Binaural 69 (16 critics) / 7.9 (21 votes)
I know there'll be wide variance on the lists, but what would your Pearl Jam album rankings look like today? I understand your rankings might change a week, month, year from now.
Here's mine. Quick background on my fandom: I never liked Ten until a few years ago. I was drawn in by band's SNL 94 effort for Vitalogy. I consider Yield the best start-to-finish rock album of the last 20 years:
1 - Yield
2 - Vitalogy
3 - No Code
4 - Backspacer
5 - Ten
6 - Pearl Jam (avocado)
7 - Vs.
8 - Riot Act
9 - Binaural"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”0 -
Then counter my list by putting Binaural at the top of yours.__________________

Riot Act is a heaping mess of music. Some of it good, some with potential, and some completely uninspiring. Some of the lyrics, by other band members, and Ed's vocal delivery on songs leave a lot to be desired. I would guess that most of the people who like RA became fans post 1998. Just a guess. I'm glad some fans like it more than any of the other PJ albums cause I don't.0

I like most of Riot Act but it is nowhere near as good as Backspacer0

Love Riot Act, deal with it0

Its not the best thing since Yield. Its the best thing since Binaural."Well, I think this band is incapable of sucking."

My favourite thing about this thread is that it reads like a series of confessions. Like an AA meeting or an intervention or something. Admitting to loving songs on RA, Bin etc.
"Mom, Dad: i know im a PJ fan, and i wasnt meant to like Riot Act, but i do. I cant help it. It's just who i am. Can i still live here?"
People daringly admitting that they like Ghost, Sleight Of Hand. It's refreshing to see on this board.
Now that I've said that, im going to make my admission: (im gona go to town with this one): I enjoy listening to Sweet Lew. This is not a joke, the bass in it is really fun to play.
FLAME AWAY, SHOW ME WHAT YOU'VE GOT!!power high, power low.....they'd still have nothing on you.....

ha ha funny how we all have different tastes in music. I love Riot act and dislike backspacer.
This album is comparable to Metallica : death magnetic in a way. You hear different pearl jam songs throughout the entire album. Man of the hour, mankind(the song stone sings on no code right ?) gauranteed, comatose they all appear on this album. It just doesn't feel like a Pearl jam album to me. i love got some and fixer is alright but where the hell are the other good rock songs !?
oh well this is just my opinion so whatever eh.0 -

I think it's the best album since Yield people are just sick of haters like you. If you don't like it go away! Obviously with your negativity you don't get the album because it's all about love and being positive!0

People are sick of haters like me? So I'm a hater for saying I like Riot Act better than Backspacer? Interesting.
Seems like Riot Act has gotten a lot of love in this thread, a lot of people like Riot Act more than Backspacer.
Not hating on Backspacer, I just don't think it's the second coming of Yield. Backspacer kind of makes me appreciate everything else in their discography that much more.
It's all an opinion. I'm entitled to share mine, even if it's different than yours.0 -

You know I love the fact you're supporting me here, but I happen to love Man of the Hour and Gauranteed. :roll:0 -

Yeah, and you've done it without saying the band sucks or Eddie has lost it, etc. So props!

I listen to pretty much the whole album through except for Thumbing and Ghost, they bore me. No offence to Thumbing fans, i know lots of people go mad for that song.
I prefer Riot Act to No Code & Yield. Thats just me. No reason why someone cant like Riot Act more than another album.
Backspacers great and accessible, but i wonder if it will demand my attention in the future the way Vitalogy, Binaural or Riot Act do with all the nooks & crannies to the songs. All i know is I've been walking around singing the songs in my head for days, and I havent done that (ie: clicked with a PJ album immediately) since Yield.

people are just sick of lovers like you. If you like it so much, stay of the board and spin it. And let us discuss
I don't get the idea of everyone with a negative opinion not being allowed on a/the message board. Sounds like this is cult, church or how Fox News works. "Our opinion or no opinion".
You don't have to love BS to be a fan, and you are allowed to discuss your opinions. FFS."Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0 -
I_GOT_no_IDea wrote:I've had a similar experience with Backspacer to you dude - i'd say exactly the same thing about not having clicked with a PJ album immediately since Yield! it's so refreshing to have a straight-up collection of great songs, with no filler, and no songs that would be great except for having been deliberately sabotaged by added weirdness. an example of one of those songs for me would be help help - a fantastic song that's just hard for me to listen to because of the weird high-pitched added vocal track. the rest of that song i love, but i can't enjoy the whole thing. with backspacer, there's nothing distracting about the songs - a lot of people will say and have said that this is showing a lack of creativity, but for me (and many others i'm sure) it shows that PJ are over trying to be challenging to the ear for the sake of it - content instead to rock the fuck out old school.
Yeah thats pretty much it exactly. I like the weirdness, but having something i can digest quickly but still is very strong material is a welcome change in a PJ album. like has been said earlier, at least each album gets a surprised/mixed reaction from fans. If it was the "same old PJ" then it would lose it's appeal i guess.
Brendan O'Brien was given much more input on this album, i think that's probably the main reason there's not as much weirdness in it. All the old stories about how the band wanted to keep the edginess / inaccesibility in the older BO'B albums starts to make sense now. like how BO'B wanted to make Better Man more poppy, or the lead single. Thats pretty much whats happened here with The Fixer, except the band didnt fight him on it this time.
If O'Brien had his way, Vitalogy could've sounded more similar to this! thats a weird thought...0
