I would like to read just one article on Pearl Jam where the writer didn't use the words angst, 90's rock or Ticketmaster within the first few paragraphs.

  • The Washington Times is a RAG! It's a conservative Republican paper from DC and, let me put it to you this way, the circulation for the Washington Post is 600,000+.....the circulation for the Washington Times is 50,000. Just because the word 'washington' is in the title....doesnt mean it's important.

  • I agree with some of what he says and was surprised how close it is in some respects to my own review.

But after A LOT of listens I think there are just two really awful songs, Speed of Sound and Force of Nature. You definitely hear U2 cheesiness on FON!!! And I had thought some springsteen too, but didn't add it to the review. But he's got a point.

If you're PJ obsessed though like us you know there will be one or two tracks on every record you probably won't love. I didn't like Inside Job on the last record either. But guess what? Other folks LOVE the songs you don't. It's just the way it is. Overall the album is pretty good. It just doesn't have much of a vibe to it like most others for good or bad. There is a sterility to it in some ways despite how good the band sounds. I don't know how to describe it really.

  • What a douche.

He obviously has no real grasp of reality.

"Amongst the Waves" aims for a soaring, epic sweep, but instead, it's obvious and derivative - like a terrifying mix of U2 and Celine Dion."'

    Pearl Jam
    Backspacer

    Monkeywrench

Despite needlessly slick production from Brendan O'Brien, many of the songs nevertheless feel underdeveloped.

Ok. I still haven't heard the album, but this makes me wonder if this guy has either. After the mentions in interviews about how this was basically the first time since writing Ten that the instrumental core of this band got together and wrote songs and rehearsed before they went into the studio, I find the author's statement to be revealing. But more revealing about him than the album.

Hot Press had a not so favourable review also but did give the album 3/5. Now I only read it in the shop last night but was basically saying that it had a couple of good songs and a few shite ones. He reckoned Just Breathe was a classic but amongst the waves and Force of Nature (I think) would be an embarressment to the Spin Doctors had they put them out. Basically the dude said he was a fan back in the day and still liked them but didnt really put this accross in the review.

Also I bought the Irish Examiner yesterday as they had an article on PJ (basic interview with mike!)....guess what....Ticketmaster & Kurt...oh and by the way they have a new album out too!!

Interesting though was Mike saying that Target took order of 1million copies of Backspacer  :o so the band said yes...put this on top of what Stone said about Target offering them $5 per album as opposed to $1.50-$2 usual...no wonder they fooking jumped at it.

Just more info...oh and read a 4/5 review in Uncut...they loved it

I love the album, there isnt a song on it that I want to skip...which surprises me as, unlike most, I was considerably underwhelmed by the Speed of Sound demo but love the album version (yes I know I'm in the minority)...my biggest gripe is that the production seems to be toned down...I need to keep turning the volume up with each song (same as grant lee buffalo's copperopilis) which does me head in...but thats my only gripe...am loving this album 8-)

Yes. A thousand times yes. I don't think I've read an article in ages that has passed over the broad details that most everyone already is aware of. You'd think with space being a premium on the printed page that it would be more important for the author's to be succinct in their interviews or reviews.

  • Music critics are critics and journalists. But clearly you'd expect opinion from a critic or else you wouldn't read it. A pure news story on Backspacer would read like this:

Backspacer is Pearl Jam's ninth album. It features 11 songs and clocks in at 36 minutes, the shortest Pearl Jam record to date.

It was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia by producer Brendan O'Brien.

The first single is The Fixer. Pearl Jam debuted another song Got Some on the Conan O'Brien show, no relation to Brendan O'Brien.

    And so on...

  • my problem with it isn't that it's negative, but that it's very smug and pretentious. Like someone else said, "Mr.Vedder" is a douche way of saying eddie and he doesn't mention anything about the other memebers...doesn't talk about the quality of the music, just the lyrics really. Seems like he listened to the first 3 albums and then this one. but whatever..can't wait for tues.
  • I hate how this review keeps talking about how Eddie used to be angry and now his music has kind of mellowed out and how that's a bad thing. The reviewer doesn't seem to understand that Eddie isn't a 20 something anymore. He's older now and along with age his way of thinking also changes. People seem to forget that musicians age as well. They're people and also have the same wide range of emotions that non musicians have. Well that's just my two cents.

i will never understand why people get up in arms over OPINIONS, especially about something as subjective as music. we're all entitled to em. i've not yet heard backspacer outside of got some on conan, so i wait to reserve judgement. however, if this guy doesn't like it.....well hell, he is more than entitled to have and share that opinion. it also doesn't make him a douchebag or less of a human being....

  • the thread title should be changed to "the first TRUE review"

spot on how i feel about the album... strong beginning that loses steam SO quickly... the U2 and springsteen thing definitely came to mind...

these bad reviews are necessary to the artistic process... if they get nothing but praise then what does the band really take from everything

whether youre pro backspacer or a total hater you gotta admit this albums far from perfect... cant hurt to mention the negatives and hope the band fixes them the next time around... or even when they play them live

I don't think it is far from perfect at all. Far from perfect (to me) would have me skipping songs. Like I do on every other album. And that's not because this one is new, its because there is no filler like Red Dot, Bugs, Pry To, Foxy Mop Handle whatever, Soon Forget, Big Wave, I'm Open, and almost all of Riot Act.

    My opinion though.

But I have to wonder what people were looking for here. More of the same?

  • It's an honest review. Backspacer is a terrible album. Easily their worst - I love all other albums but this one is bad. People are programmed to say it's great because it's PJ but come on - Do you realize what you are listening to? It's a poor album except for the 3 songs - get some, the fixer, supersonic

I'd be very suprised if a band after all these years read the reviews and then took these people opinions on board. If the people at the shows started booing during a song or they failed to sell out their gigs then maybe they would take that on board...maybe... :D
