It cracks me up when critics expect PJ to release a "grunge" album every time. Are they seriously expecting another Ten out of this band? They'll never make another record that sounds like those early days because they've grown out of that.

I like it. This guy doesn't. Cool!
The only part of this review I really don't like, as someone already mentioned, is how this is a reviewer stuck in the past. Pearl Jam is clearly trying something new (a change, if you will) and this reviewer doesn't want to move on from the days when Pearl Jam were full of angst. I'm sure they are now - they simply express things differently. And if they aren't full of angst any more? Well, I think this reviewer should get off his high horse. Everyone's entitled to their feelings, and no one's about to give this guy a hard time if he's happy.. why should it be any different about a band?

I would like to read just one article on Pearl Jam where the writer didn't use the words angst, 90's rock or Ticketmaster within the first few paragraphs.

It's a conservative Republican paper from DC and, let me put it to you this way, the circulation for the Washington Post is 600,000+.....the circulation for the Washington Times is 50,000. Just because the word 'washington' is in the title....doesnt mean it's important.

  • I agree with some of what he says and was surprised how close it is in some respects to my own review.

But after A LOT of listens I think there are just two really awful songs, Speed of Sound and Force of Nature. You definitely hear U2 cheesiness on FON!!! And I had thought some springsteen too, but didn't add it to the review. But he's got a point.

If you're PJ obsessed though like us you know there will be one or two tracks on every record you probably won't love. I didn't like Inside Job on the last record either. But guess what? Other folks LOVE the songs you don't. It's just the way it is. Overall the album is pretty good. It just doesn't have much of a vibe to it like most others for good or bad. There is a sterility to it in some ways despite how good the band sounds. I don't know how to describe it really.

"Amongst the Waves" aims for a soaring, epic sweep, but instead, it's obvious and derivative - like a terrifying mix of U2 and Celine Dion."'

Despite needlessly slick production from Brendan O'Brien, many of the songs nevertheless feel underdeveloped.

Ok. I still haven't heard the album, but this makes me wonder if this guy has either. After the mentions in interviews about how this was basically the first time since writing Ten that the instrumental core of this band got together and wrote songs and rehearsed before they went into the studio, I find the author's statement to be revealing. But more revealing about him than the album.

Hot Press had a not so favourable review also but did give the album 3/5. Now I only read it in the shop last night but was basically saying that it had a couple of good songs and a few shite ones. He reckoned Just Breathe was a classic but amongst the waves and Force of Nature (I think) would be an embarressment to the Spin Doctors had they put them out. Basically the dude said he was a fan back in the day and still liked them but didnt really put this accross in the review.

Also I bought the Irish Examiner yesterday as they had an article on PJ (basic interview with mike!)....guess what....Ticketmaster & Kurt...oh and by the way they have a new album out too!!

Interesting though was Mike saying that Target took order of 1million copies of Backspacer  :o so the band said yes...put this on top of what Stone said about Target offering them $5 per album as opposed to $1.50-$2 usual...no wonder they fooking jumped at it.

Just more info...oh and read a 4/5 review in Uncut...they loved it

I love the album, there isnt a song on it that I want to skip...which surprises me as, unlike most, I was considerably underwhelmed by the Speed of Sound demo but love the album version (yes I know I'm in the minority)...my biggest gripe is that the production seems to be toned down...I need to keep turning the volume up with each song (same as grant lee buffalo's copperopilis) which does me head in...but thats my only gripe...am loving this album 8-)
