Maybe he thought it was a Town Hall meeting, not a joint session of Congress.
    ...
    Yeah.. it could happen.

  • tehnically i think the shoe thrower was at a press conference, not a speech

That a good point. It is, however, irrelevant.

Look, it's not a big deal. I just find the double standard to be kind of funny.

it was irrelevant, that's why i said technically.

i edited my post while you were replying, by the way

I saw ... you kind of re-fought the Iraq War in that post, which is also a tad irrelevant. Either it's important to approach our differences of opinion with a sense of decorum, or it isn't.

Maybe if Joe Wilson had simply thrown a loafer ...

He is a jackass, no doubt.

But I wonder how many people condemning his actions today consider the Iraqi shoe thrower to be a hero.

quite the random comparison...anyway, I don't think the shoe thrower is a hero...

    Random?

Both people interrupted a speech by a sitting U.S. president. One is held up as a jackass by the conventional wisdom of this board, one is held up as a martyr.

I think they're both jackasses, frankly.
    ...
I can see the comparison... but, it all depends on how you view it, that matters... I guess.
I mean, not too many Americans think the Iraqi shoe thrower is a Hero or a martyr. The people in Iraq may feel differently, but not the Americans... or, at least, most of us.
I guess a fair comparison would be to ask the Iraqi people of how they feel about Joe Wilson, to get a more defined view.
    ...
But, still.. the shoe thing was funny. Mostly because Bush ducked them like he's had shoes thrown at his head before (I'm looking at you, Laura). If Bush had actually been hit... I'd probablty feel differently.

He got his name in the paper....

I loved the "How dare you speak to the king like that" look old Nancy gave wilson.

I love the double standard with this president. The last 8 years the Liberals tore Bush apart and now someone heckles their guy and it becomes a total outrage. You would think this guy sold secrets to the Taliban or something.

Wilson probably should have kept his mouth shut, but it seems the focus should be on the real issue here. Instead, like usual, there is some sidebar that ruins the discussions.

Sad thing here about these outbursts by both sides is that it will be followed by the citizenry of this country as we go forward when the President speaks. How can we grow into the future as a nation divided in colors of red and blue makes no sense to me?

i heard that wilson's democratic opponent in the upcomng election raised over a half million bucks overnight. wilson's political career may come to a screeching halt in 2010 if that keeps up.

Congress should just revert to those Korean Style Parliment sessions... you know, the ones where the fists fly and chairs get tossed... because seriously, how fucked up is our Congress anyway? What's their approval rating... 21%? They him and haw about decorum and shit... fuck you, assholes. You ALL suck.
    ...
And imagine Kucinich and Lieberman in a headlock and flayling their tiny fists o' fury railing at each other's faces... or Orrin Hatch curled up in a ball while Barney Frank beats him silly with his purse. If the fucking assholes are going to do nothing but continue this childish partisan bullshit of blowhard hot air that results in diddly-squat... then, at least give us the entertainment factor of watching them beat the crap out of each other.

That's exactly the point on this occasion it gives the down graded appearance that it's ok to speak down and outright call out the President who happens to be a person of color. Even after an apology what I believe will follow will be the encouragement of citizens doing the same thing if not worse in front of a national audience. Do you think congressman Wilson would've done the same thing in the same scenario if it was former president GWB, I honestly DON'T think so?

Even when we had a President like GWB who we now know lied about WMD and other lies the most that was uttered to him were boos during a major speech. Which is also improper. This may not have made no
*curse word* difference to you however the impact is far reaching than a fucking joke.

yes i agree that was disrespectful. but you have to admit, gwb pretty much earned those boos as the worst president in the last century. obama has done nothing to warrant such disrespect at this point in his presidency.

it appears that wilson is not long for the house. the senator from SC said he should go before the house and apologize to obama, the house and senate, and the people of south carolina.

Good Christ. You're on the right side of this argument. Joe Wilson acted like a jackass. Dragging race into it really cheapens your argument.

I'm getting really sick of this prevalent idea that if you disagree with or critcize Obama, it's because you are a racist. It can't be that you simply passionately disagree with him on a hot-button issue. No, that's not possible at all.

If this is true, then any black person who critcized George W. Bush must also be a racist.

nice try, but wilson's claims have already been repudiated by factcheck....its in the article.

It's true that the bill bars illegal immigrants from receiving federal funds/grants for health insurance. However, it does not specifically require proof of citizenship when applying for said federal funding. It's kind of asinine.

The Republicans did propose two amendments to the bill that would require proof of citizenship, which were voted down. Apparently, that's what Smokin' Joe Wilson was blabbering about.

It's sort of like passing a law that requires all operators of motor vehicles to have a drivers lisence, but prohibiting a police officer from asking to see it if he pulls you over.

    Makes no sense.

Fox News and the rest of the media would absolutely play the story out quite differently. No doubt. Yes, people should be more open minded and not play the race card, but it's a plain fact, that the media would portray this picture completely different, if it was Bush on the podium and not Obama.

And from a social standpoint, Wilson is only doing what those few newsclips of the town hall meetings suggest: people lashing out towards the gov't. It's going to become more and more acceptable as it's been in the media already numerous times. Monkey see, monkey do.
