I don't get all this talk or articles lately that state the band is self releasing Backspacer & further releases in the future. I mean, let's get real, they did sell out on the deal w/ Target. Stone even said himself in a interview that if we could have had a record label in the past tell us that sell our albums only through them & make $5/record as opposed to $1-1.50/record then they would've jump on it right away..."We fought through years of handling our creative control on Sony"..something along those lines..newsflash! They did whatever they wanted for 12 years w/ Epic & still were successful w/ tours & sales.
What gives? Who are they fooling? PJ still brings in million$ each time they tour so for Stone to say something like that just shows they've become greedy...as does all older successful bands i.e. The Eagles (Walmart) AC/DC (Walmart), Axl Rose (it's not G N' R, Best Buy) & now Pearl Jam (Target) except they still wanna be cool & work w/ indie stores which are on the brink of extinction...it's all about being cool right? You want a independent band? try FUGAZI, turned down major label offers years ago & made a real impact w/ original DIY mentality...everyone should be thanking Dischord Records

so what?
don't like their stance, don't buy their music.
We're all human - they have children now, and this is what they do for a living. They might as well get paid for their work, right?9/29/96, 8/29/98, 9/8,11/98, 7/28/99, 8/23,24,25/00, 10/13/00, 4/15/03, 4/30/03, 7/8,9,12,14/03, 10/1/04, 9/30/05, 10/1/05, 5/4,5,13,27,28/06, 6/1,3/06, 6/19,20,22,24,25,27/08, 7/1/08, 8/4,5,7,16/08, 8/21/09, 10/27,28,30,31/09, 5/15,17,18,20,21/10, 9/2/12, 10/18,19,21,22,25/130 -

Who gives a shit? It doesn't affect you at all. Would you go to your job and do it for free? There's nothing wrong with wanting to take care of your family. If you've got the talent, get rewarded for it, they deserve it.Boston, MA - Sept 28, 2004

Im sorry but I cant agree with you at about PJ being greedy. The work done by the band, the money they put into projects, its all gotta be paid for.
I dont care who carries the album. What deals are struck. Pearl Jam are like every other band in that they are all businesses that have to make money. They should get as much money from the job they as they can. Why should some lawyer get it all. Good luck to them I say0 -
getting paid? are you slow? there's a difference between getting paid & being fucking millionaires for years on end then flaunting it w/ your deal on a new album. I don't get this... The band strives to do what is best for them. They don't do this for free. It is their livelihood. I think it is respectable for them to get ad eal that is best for them, allows them control and creativity, and thy can still help out the indie record stores. They don't have to go even that far. I think all of this "selling out" talk is tired. Get over it. Enjoy the music, the shows, and the band. Let them do what they do best. They have always done right in the past and they are going to do their best to do what is right for them, the music, and the fans. Time for people to get off their high horses and leave it be.Don't need a helmet...I've got a hard, hard head...

Pearl Jam is self releasing their album. They chose to partner with Target to widen the reach of the album. They also have a deal with independent record stores. This is not the same market they faced when they were under contract with Sony years ago. They are doing what they can to make money since it is very difficult to make money off of record sales in this day and age. They haven't sold out until you see Eddie Vedder doing American Express commercials like Dave Matthews.4/28/2003,7/5/2003,7/8/2003, 7/14/2003,10/02/2004, 9/12/2005, 5/27/2006, 5/28/2006, 8/5/2007, 6/14/2008, 10/28/2009, 10/30/2009, 10/31/2009, 5/21/2010, 9/3/2011 9/4/2011, 9/2/2012, 9/22/2012, 7/19/2013, 10/18/2013, 10/19/2013, 10/12/2014, 9/26/2015, 4/8/2016, 4/9/2016, 5/1/2016, 5/2/2016, 8/22/2016, 4/7/2017, 9/3/2018, 9/18/2021, 9/10/2022, 9/11/2022, 9/14/2022, 8/31/2023, 5/28/2024, 9/3/2024, 9/4/2024, 9/7/2024

First of all, dont be rude. I offered my perspective that does not agree with you. You should not be posting if you only want agreement. I dont agree with you at all. You are infact wrong. Short sighted and you come across as somewhat jeolous of others success. I have no problem with ppl being rich. They give back and that is fine by me0 -
Hey, come back when you've had a successful band for 20 years, fulfilled a studio contract that tied your balls to your leg for 18 of those years, fought monopolies in court (Ticketmaster), and donated millions and millions of dollars to charities, and forwarded 100% of the proceeds of one of your most popular singles to charity (Last Kiss), erased your carbon footprint for your tours...
In other words, don't be making claims about the band based simply on how they chose to distribute their art...
Plus, Target is not Wal-Mart."P-E-A-R-L J-A-M is priceless to me."0 -

Oh yeah...securing money and success, and taking advantage of the opportunities to secure the future of generations and generations of your offspring is a terrible idea. Especially if you're already "doing good".
You're a clown.0 -
you people are retarded...you're missing the point...PJ could most likely live off of the 1st 3 albums for a long time & from touring all these years. So it's like keep rewarding people who've been successful for good amount of time then we watch 'em all ca$h in, yah!! Well, then I ask this question...why are you a PAYING member of their fan club...don't be hypocritical"P-E-A-R-L J-A-M is priceless to me."0 -
Yeah. The fucking nerve of Pearl Jam for trying to sell their music.
You cite Fugazi, yet seem to have little to no understanding whatsoever about what Fugazi or Pearl Jam stood for...and still stand for.
Yes Fugazi didn't join up with a major label, yes they kept their ticket prices low...but does that make every single other band on the planet a giant corporate sellout because they decided not to follow that particular model.
When did Target become this giant corporate monster? How is Pearl Jam fucking you over as a fan? Nobody seemed to mind when they were milking off the tits of fucking SONY CORP which last time I checked, is a hell of alot bigger than fucking Target.
You ever notice how most of the people who throw around the word SELLOUT
1) Have absolutley no clue about what the word actually means.
2) Are themselves the most hypocritical people on the fucking face of the earth.
Yeah...bet you that the OP was probably downloading -FREE MUSIC- from torrent sites as he wrote this little ditty how Pearl Jam is so evil and corporate...all the while ASS RAPING and stealing the music and art of younger up and coming lesser known bands ...
Oh yeah...I forgot...It's not a crime.
There's nothing wrong with grabbing free music, cause no one should have to pay for the consumption of art. :roll:0 -

Are you sitting with foam at your mouth? You are retarded. Your fucking rude and quite the idiot. This aint the good life you silly little PRICK. Now fuck off and please.... Dont renew your membership. We aouldnt want PJ taking your very hard earned money0 -
Pearl Jam have independently produced the product that is backspacer...target are a selling tool for the album...as part of the deal PJ still own Backspacer...they keep their piece or art for themselves, no sony here...I reiterate Target are a seller for the product...this deal works for everyone...OP its 2009...the playing field for releasing your music changes every year now...i know, im a professional musician..to have a deal like this and still own your album is huge..i think you need to think a bit more about that...as Ed said in the Billboard interview, people can have their opinions about this but they thought long and hard about it...in your mind, should the concert tickets just cover costs? should the merch be free? Because PJ are successful should they just give the album away for free...I have to disagree with you.0
