When comparing quaterbacks the question should not be "Who is the best?" it should be "Your team is in the Super Bowl, who do you want taking the snaps?"
The answer for me and any level headed football fan should be Joe Montana. 4 Super Bowls, 4 Super Bowl wins, 0 interceptions. The guy was just a winner, plain and simple.
Would anyone seriously pick Elway, Favre or Manning or anybody over Montana in this scenario?

Good question. I'd have to go with Steve Young -- he was the total package in terms of strength, speed, and agility. Not only did he have eye-popping throwing statistics, but he was one of the best running quarterbacks in the history of the NFL as well. That's something Montana, Elway, Manning, etc. can't lay claim to.
If he wouldn't have started in the USFL -- and wouldn't have followed that up by sitting behind Joe Montana for many years -- I'm pretty confident that he'd be widely regarded as the best of all-time.
Edit: Oh, and, uh, he could really throw the leather, man.

Montana's the man but another way to can compare is to say "how valuable is the player to the team?" I'll use Elway and Favre as examples. If they ever got hurt for an entire season, their teams would be terrible sub .500 teams. compare that to Montana who missed both the '91 season (Young led the league in QB rating) and never got off the bench in '92 except for one game (Young was MVP). of course, this is a testament to Young's greatness rather than a knock on Montana. but it's still worth noting that the team carried on fine without him whereas if most teams lost a QB as celebrated as Montana (Brady, Elway, Manning, or Favre for example), their teams would be totally screwed.

He would be a close second in my opinion. I agree with you 100%, he was the total package. He was Manning + Vick -the dog fighting. Just an unbelievable athlete. On some days I'm convinced he is the best all time, but today I'm going with Montana.

Currently I would agree, though I think if we revisit this question in a decade, the clear answer will be Tom Brady.
Montana hands down. He made it look so easy. Young was great too, but it never seemed easy (except the golden 94 season). In a game you had to win, no one was better than Joe.
Rebuttals:
As for those who said Favre. He's overrated. He's the only QB among the considered "greats" that could've been solely responsible for a win or a loss. You never knew if he was going to throw 3 TDs or 3 INTs.
Brady is solely a product of a system and a remarkable defense. NE could've easily won with many other good QBs. And yes, Brady is having a sweet year, but his receiving corp could be the most talented in history, better than anything Young or Montana had.
Aikman, his name should not have been mentioned at all. Emmitt Smith was overrated too. All the credit for the entire Dallas dynasty should be given to the big-ass offensive line they had. Best line in all of football for over a decade.
Oh forgot about Elway, great passer, but let's face it, he never won until Terrel Davis showed up.
Tom Brady did more with less than any of the "greats" from the past. Now that he has real deal weapons, the records will fall. If the Pats go undefeated this year and win the superbowl the debate is over. Nobody has ever comanded the pocket better than Brady.
By the way Pearl Jam is the best thing since..... recorded history.
The smallest oceans, still get....

No one ever mentions him, but Terry Bradshaw was the first qb to win 4 Super Bowls and did so calling his own plays. He was one of the last qbs to do that before those duties were assumed by offensive coordinators and head coaches.
Easy Favre
Done way more with less talent

Beat me to it. Though I was gonna say NothingManning (Eli, of course)

Joe Montana was great and had a GREAT system to work from (same with Tom Brady and Troy Aikman).
