i want to know all about unthought known. is it much the same as eddie's acoustic version ? does it have the same tempo, but with the rest of the band ? cheers
hadnt heard eds acoustic version so dont know but its a midtempo song with cool lyrics from ed, i had read somewherethat this wasa mccready song, which again surprised me cause seems like an ed composition, another fade out track with mccready giving an uplifting solo atthe end, otherthan amongst the waves probably the coolest guitar part by mccready, although the song seems a little choppy music wise until the final chorus/solo/fadeout
Wow that's interesting to hear! Wouldn't have expected a big guitar part at the end, based on Ed's acoustic version. There isn't much to the ending either, so I guess a fade out with a a cool Mike solo wouldn't be all that bad a choice to take it. Some of my favorite lyrics are in this.
Oh - do you remember if it ends with the 'dream the dreams of others then, you'll be noones' rival' or the 'a distant time, a distant place, so won't you give in' ? I like the first version best, but he played both versions live. I can't figure out if one of them he messed up on and skipped ahead a verse.
24 years old, mid-life crisis
nowadays hits you when you're young

I'm interested too. I love Ed's live version more than anything I've heard yet. I hope the studio version isn't a let down.
same here. i'm loving it. have had it on repeat for most of the day, truly beautiful.
...Pearl Jam, a group filled with pride, passion, and intricate musicianship. Their music is full of subtle textures, rich color, soul-searching power, imagery, and eerie dissonance.
This thread is fucking killing me. I've been kinda downplaying the hype of the album so far so as to not have too high of expectations. But I feel like screaming "I HAVE TO HAVE IT NOW!"
I feel so immature right now... kinda like how I raced home from school everyday back in 1984 to see if my Millenium Falcon had been delivered it after my Mom ordered it from Sears catalog. We didnt have internet or shipping updates, so I freaked out for like two weeks straight.
Carry on, dont mind me...i'll be fine.
But Backspacer better be here on the 18th or I might just lose it.
People are hearing this album, one song is played at a sport event, and the album doesn't leak. Strange times indeed...
yeah i wish i had the album in myhands but mybuddy only hadthat one copy and i dont havea burner so i was s.o.l. mostly standard ed stuff in the way of love loss and nature themes i cant really tell you specific lyrics cause i dont wanna mess them up all i want to say about it is ed sounds amazing best singing to date no doubt

This thread is pure self masochism... And fuck, I know what you mean by the Millenium Falcon. I was twelve and couldn't sleep for days when the Return of the Jedi came out...

I wouldn't rule it out. A song like Green Disease would be one that I could say musically reminds me a lot of the little clips we've heard so far. Not to mention Thumbing My Way and Just Breathe
A few songs.. but over all, Riot Act is their most down beat album. Judging by the songs we've heard and the clips, this will be their most upbeat album. Maybe these albums would compliment each other as an upside and downside, but I can't seeing them being alike. If anything, Yield most resembles Backspacer so far..
Is there a trippy / psychadelic element to this record? I love it when PJ bugs me out.
You must love RA then, that whole record is kind of like that. I think I like it more now than ever. It's kind of 'out there'.
I've come to the conclusion that I would LOVE Riot Act if Ed opened his mouth a little more and had a bit more energy while he sang, and if they got rid of "Thumbing My Way."
Arc, You Are, Help Help, Bushleaguer are all pretty out there-- Can't Keep and All or None have leads that have kind of a echoey distant feel to them-- not to mention the record as a whole is the first time we've had PJ with an organ player on the most of the songs, which really made it stand out.
I think I'm going to spin that one this afternoon, while I anxiously await Backspacer, now that you mention it!

I listened to this over the weekend! Its definitely grown on me, thats for sure! I agree that Ed's singing sounds like it could use a bit more energy, but other than that it's pretty good.

not at all, the least pschadelic record to date
Sadness. Ah well-- there probably isn't much room for any of it on such a short record. Does "Gonna See My Friend" have any extended intro like "Once" or "Go" or does it kick in with words almost immediately like "Life Wasted"?

Binaural has some pretty trippy shit on there too... That one might trump Riot Act for most bugged-out Pearl Jam record-- After all, the recording style (especially with headphones), with songs like Nothing as It Seems, Sleight of Hand, Of The Girl, Insignificance (breakown is AWESOME), Rival, Soon Forget, Parting Ways.
I think this is starting to warrant it's own thread-- PJ's most psychadelic songs?

Binaural is one of their most underrated album... Your message is spot on. Binaural is much more experimental than RA IMO.
I'll take the screaming Ed of S/T over the bored/confused way he sung on Riot Act any day. Its like he didn't know when it was ok to raise his voice and show any emphasis so he just didn't aside from the end of Save You. The clips we've heard so far sound like a good mix vocally of RA and S/T leaning more toward S/T IMO

God, Get Right is such a cool song musically and then you got ed mailing in the vocal performance in some ultra low and monotonous voice. I get pissed evertime I hear that awesome bassline lead into Ed mumbling his way through the verses.
Sounds like he is firing on all cylinders from the clips I've heard of Backspacer.

I agree..
Re-record the vocals on Riot Act and it would easily be my favorite album.
I love the break down for Insignificance on the NAIS single.. Overall, I think Brendon did a better job remixing it for Binaural, but I liked Tchade Blake's take on the break down.

How about how Matt taps the hi-hat several times at the beginning of NAIS on the single version? Always thought that added something to the beginning and liked it more than the album version. I also like how Insignificance ends whatever that is, I guess it's mike, almost sounds like an organ or something.

I also realize that I need other friends...
