Wow! It sounds like you have been doing some soul searching. I can tell you have not come to this decision without thinking it through. I do not think I have ever met you Scott but I really hope your decision brings you happiness and peace. Take care brother.

so you're not a fan of hobbies?
  • Cheers on becoming minimalist! It is very freeing.

I used to own a car. Now I walk, I take the bus and subway.
    I used to rent a one-bedroom apartment. Now I rent a "studio."
I used to have a cool collection of miniature toys and figures. I sold them to pay bills.
One year ago, I had cable tv service, internet, and a telephone company. Now my internet triples as all three.
I remember when I sometimes owned two pairs of shoes. I can't imagine being that excessive and frivolous today.

When I notice 'stuff' accumulating in my closets, I sell it or give it away. Packrats and hoarders are not happy people. I still get new things- I enjoy them for a time, and then sell them on when I've had my fill.

Needless to say, the response has been a bit overwhelming at best...I appreciate all the kind words and thought of encouragement, and will respond to EVERYONE as I have time...Like I said earlier, this is going to be a SLOW process and I am in no hurry to do it. I figured I would throw it out here to see if it made sense to do it here, or elsewhere. While it is VERY apparent that here is the right place from the 50+pms I have recieved since this morning, just please be patient. I AM going to get rid of some of this stuff for sure, but I also need to focus on ME at the same time...So as I said, dont get offended or feel left out...I WILL get back to your in the order in which your message was received some time. Thanks again for everything guy/gals...You made was is/has been a sad day for me much more tolerable by you being gracious...kind...and understanding! THAT I appreciate!! :-)

    BE SOUND.....scott

so you're not a fan of hobbies?

Hobbies are great as long as they stay hobbies. I used to collect a ton of stuff... baseball cards, posters, cd's, records, autographs, etc.

I finally got to place where I realized that it was becoming a burden and less of an enjoyment. I also realized that a lot of the stuff I bought would be glanced at right after I bought it and then packed away to keep it in mint condition.

I sold a ton of stuff on eBay and had a couple of garage sales here at the house. It really felt good to get rid of all that stuff. I have to say Ed's soundtrack and the movie Into The Wild had a huge part in my decision to free myself. I also look at my parents and see their garage and basement filled with stuff that they never use, but they can't bear to throw out. Its a huge burden to them and I don't want to pass this warped collecting gene on to my 3 kids. So I kept a few things I really loved and got rid of the rest. I don't regret it for a second.

To the OP... good luck in your journey.

yeah if anything begins to consume you, it's time to step back...i was wondering from blondie why she doesn't understand collecting...it's a hobby whether it's stamps, poster, yachts...being a collector can be a healthy thing as long as it doesn't take over your life and her comment "you can't take it with you" was kinda off base since a collector knows (or should know) that he can't "take it with him" because that's not the point...it's recreation, hobby :)

Well I’m sorry I made that statement then ran off.
I wasn’t trying to slam collectors, I just wanted to share how I felt.

TravisTheSky and On2Legs summed up how i feel. i'm glad they posted. :)

and to the OP i wish you the best.
