"People on death row, the treatment of animals, women's right to choose. So much in America is based on religious fundamentalist Christianity. Grow up! This is the modern world!" - Ed Vedder

I'm going to pull this quote out again when Eddie finds Jesus 5 years from now.

I think it would be awesome if Eddie Vedder himself goes all Stephen Baldwin/Kirk Cameron on everyone. Peoples heads would explode and all the rabid lefty Jammers would blow their collective gaskets. My worldview is polar opposite of Ed but I still love the band and their music. What if the shoe was on the other foot for the rest of you?

The treatment of animals/pro-choice stuff I understand as Ed's being blaring about that for eons. What's with the "death row" deal? We should release all of our convicted violent criminals? WTF?

P.S. I think some of that might be paraphrased. "Grow up! This is the modern world!" is a really petty and childish statement. Ed's more thoughtful than that.

how again is speaking what one believes in their heart childish? you might feel it is childinh because it is opposite of your worldview. but believe me when i say more people around here share similar sentiments to ed's than yours.

Opposing the death penalty, being pro-choice and being aganist animal cruelty. Why is voicing these opinions being childish??

I'll never understand why people feel the need to call names just because someone may think differently. It's like gay marriage..."...and how is the way someone else lives and what they believe in infringing on your life"? I think it does come down to righteous religious attitudes.

i think alot of these "christians" get upset when people do NOT believe what they believe. isn't this the kind of thing that started the crusades and the mass conversion movement? i say live and let live.

I happen to think that the teachings of Jesus Christ are really great. I really do try to live my life according to those teachings... forgiveness, tolerance, compassion for the less fortunate, helping the weak and lovng my enemy... or at the very least, trying to understand where they are coming from and why. I still am not sure about all of that resurrection and stuff. I am not going to do things I deem as good deeds for some sort of reward in the afterlife... rather, because i believe it is the human thing to do. Something Jesus has taught me.
And i don't think it's my lot to get anyone else on board... I'm leaving that up to them to decide on their own. And because i really don't like it when people preach to me.
    ...
The Christians in America get a bad rap, not because of Jesus... and not because of Christianity... because some of them act like assholes in the name of Christ. I mean, the New American Standard Bible changed the Sixth Commandment from 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' to 'You Shall Not Murder', so they could justify the Death Penalty and War. Come on... scribes have written the Old Testament for thousands of years... and we change it so we can sleep at night believing that Capital Punishment is sanctioned by God.
If the Christian Coalition (a.k.a. the Christian Right) were more 'Christ-like' in their actions and Right in their ambitions, they'd probably have a lot more credibility here. Like, no one is waging a 'War on Chrstmas'. It is more about getting more shoppers in the doors during the big money season between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. More Jewish dollars, more Muslim dollars, more Hindu dollars, more Aetheist dollars. if you think that Christmas Sale at JCPenneys is what christmas is all about... i think you need to review 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' again.
    ...
And in the end... if I'm placed before Judgement and Jesus forsakes me because I was human and had so many unanswered questions in this life... well, then i will know i was wrong. Jesus would not be the forgiving, understanding man who loves me because I'm imperfect... He would be the narcissistic, judgemental asshole that the televangelists told me He was.

Religious people believe they have monopoly on the truth ... 8-)
a monopoly exists when a specific individual has sufficient control over a particular service to determine significantly the terms on which other individuals shall have access to it.

Christians aren’t supposed to judge, yet their beliefs are so powerful some are intolerant.
    It’s so hypocritical.
They are taught to spread the faith, which I understand. It’s a way to make the group larger. But take for instance the Crusades. That was all about money and people hopped up on intolerance.

    I’ll shut up now.
It’s turning in to a ‘what’s wrong with religion’ thread now. I’m not against religion, but I’m also not for it either. Lol! I’ll just leave it at that.

"People on death row, the treatment of animals, women's right to choose. So much in America is based on religious fundamentalist Christianity. Grow up! This is the modern world!" - Ed Vedder

I'm going to pull this quote out again when Eddie finds Jesus 5 years from now.

Pretty dumb quote. People on death row are convicted of murdering people, so is it really so bad to rid society of murderers? No, even a child can grasp this one. Treatment of animals? I don't understand the Christianity tie-in here. I've gone to church for 20+ years and never heard any reference to act cruely to animals. Not a lot wrong with not wanting fetuses to be killed by vacuum cleaners.

Modern world: Pitty for murderers, and death to fetuses. I don't want that modern world.

Not pity for murderers...just the argument that it isn't a deterrent...it's like yelling at a 6 year old "don't hit your sister like that {smack}"...we don't want you to kill people yet we kill people

Abortion....obviously the right to choose has been hijacked by the religious right as "baby murder"....who in their right mind wants an abortion? No one is "pro-abortion"...they are "pro-choice"...if my daughter gets raped at 16 and gets pregnant she would have the right to an abortion versus being forced to raise the child of a criminal
