I happen to think that the teachings of Jesus Christ are really great. I really do try to live my life according to those teachings... forgiveness, tolerance, compassion for the less fortunate, helping the weak and lovng my enemy... or at the very least, trying to understand where they are coming from and why. I still am not sure about all of that resurrection and stuff. I am not going to do things I deem as good deeds for some sort of reward in the afterlife... rather, because i believe it is the human thing to do. Something Jesus has taught me.
And i don't think it's my lot to get anyone else on board... I'm leaving that up to them to decide on their own. And because i really don't like it when people preach to me.
...
The Christians in America get a bad rap, not because of Jesus... and not because of Christianity... because some of them act like assholes in the name of Christ. I mean, the New American Standard Bible changed the Sixth Commandment from 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' to 'You Shall Not Murder', so they could justify the Death Penalty and War. Come on... scribes have written the Old Testament for thousands of years... and we change it so we can sleep at night believing that Capital Punishment is sanctioned by God.
If the Christian Coalition (a.k.a. the Christian Right) were more 'Christ-like' in their actions and Right in their ambitions, they'd probably have a lot more credibility here. Like, no one is waging a 'War on Chrstmas'. It is more about getting more shoppers in the doors during the big money season between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. More Jewish dollars, more Muslim dollars, more Hindu dollars, more Aetheist dollars. if you think that Christmas Sale at JCPenneys is what christmas is all about... i think you need to review 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' again.
...
And in the end... if I'm placed before Judgement and Jesus forsakes me because I was human and had so many unanswered questions in this life... well, then i will know i was wrong. Jesus would not be the forgiving, understanding man who loves me because I'm imperfect... He would be the narcissistic, judgemental asshole that the televangelists told me He was.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Christians aren’t supposed to judge, yet their beliefs are so powerful some are intolerant.
It’s so hypocritical.
They are taught to spread the faith, which I understand. It’s a way to make the group larger. But take for instance the Crusades. That was all about money and people hopped up on intolerance.
I’ll shut up now.
It’s turning in to a ‘what’s wrong with religion’ thread now. I’m not against religion, but I’m also not for it either. Lol! I’ll just leave it at that.*~Pearl Jam will be blasted from speakers until morale improves~*0 -
darthvedder81 wrote:"People on death row, the treatment of animals, women's right to choose. So much in America is based on religious fundamentalist Christianity. Grow up! This is the modern world!" - Ed Vedder
I'm going to pull this quote out again when Eddie finds Jesus 5 years from now.
Pretty dumb quote. People on death row are convicted of murdering people, so is it really so bad to rid society of murderers? No, even a child can grasp this one. Treatment of animals? I don't understand the Christianity tie-in here. I've gone to church for 20+ years and never heard any reference to act cruely to animals. Not a lot wrong with not wanting fetuses to be killed by vacuum cleaners.
Modern world: Pitty for murderers, and death to fetuses. I don't want that modern world.0 -

Not pity for murderers...just the argument that it isn't a deterrent...it's like yelling at a 6 year old "don't hit your sister like that {smack}"...we don't want you to kill people yet we kill people
Abortion....obviously the right to choose has been hijacked by the religious right as "baby murder"....who in their right mind wants an abortion? No one is "pro-abortion"...they are "pro-choice"...if my daughter gets raped at 16 and gets pregnant she would have the right to an abortion versus being forced to raise the child of a criminalRemember the Thomas Nine !! Thanx, Brandon.
And you're right... i'm not trying to covert anyone. I am going on my path through life and letting you and everyone else choose theirs. I'm not asking anyone to follow... you all can pick whats best for you.
As for believing in Jesus Christ... i don't know about believing in Him as my Saviour... which i don't... because i'm not sure... because I don't trust what the Church is telling me... or most Christians, either. So, I guess i'm not in theChristian camp... I'm more of an out on his own guy, I guess. I just feel that the things Jesus taught are basically good things... so, i think they are a good thing for me.
I also believe that Jesus or religion in general does not corner the market on those teachings. I believe we all possess the humanity that makes us forgive, care and love... and we don't get it from Religion. Religion claims to be the source of morality... that God is the source... but, i believe we are the source. I don't believe that we need to be told to be good.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

The death row thing - surely by killing killers we are no better than them. Is it a deterrent? I didn't notice anyone stopping killing.
Pro-choice - surely that means you have the right to choose whether to be for or against it.
I'm vegetarian, into the environment, known people who have had abortions, not christian, against animal cruelty and quite open to giving my opinions to anyone who wants to know. Surely what Ed said was his opinion, it doesn't have to be everyone elses. Surely the ideal is to be in a tolerant society where everyone can express themselves in a non-violent, non-judgemental way whether christian or not.0 -

Well said. I'm a cafeteria Catholic, which means I'm not really a Catholic I guess. I do believe Jesus Christ existed and I believe following His teachings (compassion, tolerance, forgiveness and "doing unto others....") is a good way to live and raise my kids-- but I feel that way about Buddhist teachings, too.0 -
If people actually lived by what Jesus apparantly said, we wouldn't be having this argument.Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V0

i don't need Jesus to tell me to treat people with kindness, respect, and compassion.
My mama taught me that.

Which is where my conflict comes in.
I have a distrust of large bodies of authority and power telling the truth. This means governments and the Church. They may have their reasons why they don't tell us the truth... or at best, skew the truth to retain their current power, thus control.
The Church was in full control of the Bible from its conception in 600 A.D. til several years after Gutenberg's press. And remember, the populous was pretty damn illiterate back in 1035 and all that. This makes the Bible a less reliable a source... to me. And the authors of the New Testament... I know, witness and all that... but if you are going to build a church around a man, you may have a tendency to exercise artistic license with the re-telling of the Jesus legend. I mean, there's no 'going to the videotape' for verification.
Is the Bible 'The Truth? To some people, it is... which is all okay by me. Is it the Truth for me? I don't know, so i'm in the 'No' section of that jury. The Bible has been in the hands of the Church of Rome for all those centuries... they're the ones who said what goes in (and what stays out)... like I said, i have a problem with that kind of power/authority. And all those Centuries where the Church was the State in Western Civilivations. It was Church/State laws that created shit like Crusades and witch hunts.
...
But, you know what? That's my problem. If the millions believe all that and it guides their lives and gives them faith in something to believe in and hope in their lives... well, I'm happy for them. It's just that their Truths are not my Truths. I guess i just have too many unanswered questions... let me qualify that... too many unanswered questions that are based in fact to accept it as my truth. I leave them alone... I expect them to leave me alone, too.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!
