It's nice to hear someone that believes in jesus say something sensible. It rarely happens. Nice post. But you haven't converted me....nice try
...
Thanx, Brandon.
And you're right... i'm not trying to covert anyone. I am going on my path through life and letting you and everyone else choose theirs. I'm not asking anyone to follow... you all can pick whats best for you.
As for believing in Jesus Christ... i don't know about believing in Him as my Saviour... which i don't... because i'm not sure... because I don't trust what the Church is telling me... or most Christians, either. So, I guess i'm not in theChristian camp... I'm more of an out on his own guy, I guess. I just feel that the things Jesus taught are basically good things... so, i think they are a good thing for me.
I also believe that Jesus or religion in general does not corner the market on those teachings. I believe we all possess the humanity that makes us forgive, care and love... and we don't get it from Religion. Religion claims to be the source of morality... that God is the source... but, i believe we are the source. I don't believe that we need to be told to be good.

Hail, Hail!!!
The death row thing - surely by killing killers we are no better than them. Is it a deterrent? I didn't notice anyone stopping killing.
Pro-choice - surely that means you have the right to choose whether to be for or against it.
I'm vegetarian, into the environment, known people who have had abortions, not christian, against animal cruelty and quite open to giving my opinions to anyone who wants to know. Surely what Ed said was his opinion, it doesn't have to be everyone elses. Surely the ideal is to be in a tolerant society where everyone can express themselves in a non-violent, non-judgemental way whether christian or not.

Well said. I'm a cafeteria Catholic, which means I'm not really a Catholic I guess. I do believe Jesus Christ existed and I believe following His teachings (compassion, tolerance, forgiveness and "doing unto others....") is a good way to live and raise my kids-- but I feel that way about Buddhist teachings, too.
If people actually lived by what Jesus apparantly said, we wouldn't be having this argument.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
i don't need Jesus to tell me to treat people with kindness, respect, and compassion.
My mama taught me that.
………and no Jesus didn’t tell her either.
I agree with you. I'm as athiest as they come, and I don't think we need fairy tales to tell us how to live. However, as an objective viewer, MOST of what Jesus said was good.

I retract my former statement, and now agree with you.

Which is where my conflict comes in.
I have a distrust of large bodies of authority and power telling the truth. This means governments and the Church. They may have their reasons why they don't tell us the truth... or at best, skew the truth to retain their current power, thus control.
The Church was in full control of the Bible from its conception in 600 A.D. til several years after Gutenberg's press. And remember, the populous was pretty damn illiterate back in 1035 and all that. This makes the Bible a less reliable a source... to me. And the authors of the New Testament... I know, witness and all that... but if you are going to build a church around a man, you may have a tendency to exercise artistic license with the re-telling of the Jesus legend. I mean, there's no 'going to the videotape' for verification.
Is the Bible 'The Truth? To some people, it is... which is all okay by me. Is it the Truth for me? I don't know, so i'm in the 'No' section of that jury. The Bible has been in the hands of the Church of Rome for all those centuries... they're the ones who said what goes in (and what stays out)... like I said, i have a problem with that kind of power/authority. And all those Centuries where the Church was the State in Western Civilivations. It was Church/State laws that created shit like Crusades and witch hunts.
...
But, you know what? That's my problem. If the millions believe all that and it guides their lives and gives them faith in something to believe in and hope in their lives... well, I'm happy for them. It's just that their Truths are not my Truths. I guess i just have too many unanswered questions... let me qualify that... too many unanswered questions that are based in fact to accept it as my truth. I leave them alone... I expect them to leave me alone, too.

Hail, Hail!!!
But that’s where the Christians claim faith. Oh, you have to believe, it’s called faith. That’s how they get around the 'truth' issue in my opinion.
And there are some SMART people in high places that believe the Bible. Or have faith, whatever you want to call it. They believe stuff in the Bible for fact. That’s what scares me. Supposedly these high ranking smart people say they can they can work without their religion getting in the way. Which is great. I mean people of faith do sometimes have good morals BUT how can somebody that truly believes in something cut that part of themselves off when making decisions?
People say live and let live. I won’t bother you if you don’t bother me. It’s not as cut and dry as that. People in high positions are making decisions that may be involuntary or voluntary tainted by their religious beliefs. You are affected by other peoples beliefs.

"People on death row, the treatment of animals, women's right to choose. So much in America is based on religious fundamentalist Christianity. Grow up! This is the modern world!" - Ed Vedder
I'm going to pull this quote out again when Eddie finds Jesus 5 years from now.
The treatment of animals/pro-choice stuff I understand as Ed's being blaring about that for eons. What's with the "death row" deal? We should release all of our convicted violent criminals? WTF?
P.S. I think some of that might be paraphrased. "Grow up! This is the modern world!" is a really petty and childish statement. Ed's more thoughtful than that.
This is why religious people shouldn't be allowed to vote. Clearly, there are only 2 ways to deal with serious criminals... execute them or release them like the godless libs want  Never mind that we've spent billions building these kick ass super max prison. We couldn't just toss them in there for life, could we? Talk about thinking. There's no middle ground with you people.
I hope Ed takes a piss on the cross next show, just to give you all an aneurysm.
As to me, if the band espoused views I found problematic, I wouldn't care. If it crept into the lyrics and annoyed me, I wouldn't listen to it. But I sure as hell wouldn't be going on their message board posting about how I hope they find Jesus one day or whatever nonsense you want. This is why I don't give a damn about country music. Funny how all the best music comes from seculars There's a whole rack of shitty Christian rock for you to browse if Ed hurts your feelings.
And the other thing... why to I have to look for Jesus?
If He is Lord God and Saviour... and all powerful... can't He find me?
Or is He just not looking for me because He doesn't give a crap about me?

hey, he might.
if the church ever gets with the mordern times, he might.
I think it would be awesome if Eddie Vedder himself goes all Stephen Baldwin/Kirk Cameron on everyone. Peoples heads would explode and all the rabid lefty Jammers would blow their collective gaskets. My worldview is polar opposite of Ed but I still love the band and their music. What if the shoe was on the other foot for the rest of you?
With regard to your comment about lefties, do you think that if Jesus had actually lived - which he didn't, as there's absolutely no historical evidence to support this claim - that he would have voted Democrat or Republican?
Personally, someone who introduces a new way of looking at the world/a new belief system, and who challenges the power structures of the day, strikes me as someone who wouldn't be going out hunting with Dick Cheney or bouncing around at a Ted Nugent concert.

You're right. He likely wouldn't vote at all, or he'd probably be a Libertarian!

I think "fundamentalist Christianity" is the key phrase here...
"The dude abides. I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' her easy for all us sinners."

how can people in this day and age still belive what religion tells them as fact? I know their is no real way to prove or disprove the jesus actualy existed, but anyone with any thought would have to go with the fact that jesus did not exsist. This would be due to the fact that the bible was written 200 years or so after jesus had died, and their is no real evidence of anything that was said or done. Religion to me is another form of control.

I'll never cease to be amazed at how religion blinds you of rational thought
I've always felt that excess reason blinds you of your ability to have faith in anything. If we had both in moderation the world would be a much better place...
