I'm a big sci-fi geek. Love books, movies, short stories, comics everything. I read a lot of Asimov and Philip K Dick amongst others. Dune is my favourite book of all time. there's nothing better than kicking back and watching Blade Runner or 2001 for the umpteenth time too
So what about you? what's your favourite movie/book/author whatever, and why. Come on, I can't be the only nerd here.

You're not alone! :ugeek: I'm not big on sci-fi but I love it none the less, I'm a science addict. I love the exploration of philosophy through sci-fi! And even thou i'm not a star trek expert i consider star trek interesting than star wars, and star trek the next generation was the best star trek there is! And of course futurama is the most amazing show in the known universe!

Man, you're right about Futurama! Best show ever. A friend of mine is a theoretical physicist and he tells me that a lot of the science jokes go far deeper than most people will ever know.

I agree with you on the philosphical point asweel. The best sci-fi is the kind that use the worlds they create as allegories for more important themes, rather than just having space battles and such. I think a lot of people tend to dismiss sci-fi because they just think of things like star wars, but if they delve a bit deeper they would find hugely intelligent works that can easily rival any other genre.
Not that there's anything wrong with a good laser gun fight though ;)

By the way are zombies part of the sci fi culture?

Then there'd still be a typo, it says 'best' ;)

And to the OP's question - yeah but I haven't read too much. Latest ones were the Mote in God's Eye and it's sequel, Rendezvous with Rama (and none of it's sequels), and The Spin and it's sequel (one more to go).

I have the 4 disc Blade Runner blu ray but shamefully haven't given it much attention (yet).

I think zombies occupy a bit of a grey area between Sci-fi and horror. Which can work quite well when done properly, like in I am Legend(Written by Richard Matheson), but can turn out to be shitstorm if handled badly, like in I Am Legend(starring Will Smith)

Dude check out the Blade Runner box-set. It takes a while to get through. There's so much material there but it's totally worth it.

Anyone ever read The Ender series by Orson Scott Card. I stumbled on them last year on my holiday to the USA, and thought it was great. I read the 1st two books but Haven't been able to find the rest of them back here.

I haven't read the books, but I just read an article about Orson Scott Card today. Apparently, he's a batshit crazy homophobe. Which is disappointing, because I hear he's a damn good writer.

i have the same problem with other authors, I'm nor going to give my money to any of them, maybe I'll miss a couple of good books but I rather keep my ground.

It does sorta look like they're putting the shiny blue CGI cart before the actual horse. I saw a comment on Twitter yesterday: "When James Cameron reinvents the Smurfs, he goes all out."

Hah. Got the cart/horse order wrong. That'll learn me to talk.

Ha, well if you get the physicist, chances are they'll be some class of mathemetician as well. And this guy's brother is a historian (Kinda) so I got half your list covered wioth one pair of twins :P
Hardcore scientific folk tend to be fairly pedantic though. takes a bit of getting used to.

I know those bastards sometimes are pedantic but i have a lot of patience and I could be an pedantic asshole too, but I have all sort of friends and people sometimes doesn't undestand how I could have lunch with the person who clean the office and have dinner with the more snobish people in the office, so I don't mind pedantic people if they have something intellectually stimulant to say, I'm always hungry for knowledge and some fart jokes at the same time

    My favourite part:

Fry: You got that from the internet? In my time it was just used to download pornography
    Professor: Oh that's still true
    (on screen)
woman: Doctor, now that we've solved the worlds garbage problems maybe you could help me with my sexual inhibitions
Doctor: with gusto (and begins to undress)
