And for the record i loved Avocado...a nice improvement over Binaural and Riot Act.

Have you heard the new album, b/c I've heard nothing from it that says its gonna be as great as Binaural.

Nope haven't heard it...and i never said it was "as great as Binaural". I said i prefered Avocado to Binaural.

I honestly dont get all the love for Binaural. Granted the "sessions" were amazing, but the band left off most of the great songs (Sad, Fatal, Education, Puzzles & Games), and the production on Grievance does not do it justice.
    Shows: Montreal 98, Barrie 98, Montreal 00, Montreal 03, Montreal 05, Ottawa 05, Toronto 06, Vancouver Night 1 08 (EV), Vancouver Night 2 08 (EV), MSG1 08, MSG2 08, Montreal Night 2 08 (EV), Toronto Night 1 08 (EV), Toronto 09, Hartford 11 (EV), Ottawa 11, Ottawa 16, Ottawa 22.

    Oops... sorry

I still disagree. Binaural was the last of their "glory days" albums, imo. Everything since has been missin something in the guts of the tunes.

I agree the left some great tunes off, but there's still plenty to go around and I think puttin some less catchy tunes was part of the mo and really gels those middle albums together.

I'm just happy that a) there is a new album and b) it seems to be different than the others

An improvement how? I think it's the most generic, uninspired album they've ever done. Binaural is a masterpiece in comparison...even without Fatal, et al.

I like it better. Definitely still gets more plays on my player. Life Wasted, Marker in the Sand, Army Reserve, definitely not uninspired.

It could be, if only they woulda written better songs for it and performed them in a more interesting manner.

Riot Act is the most half assed attempt at an album the boys have made. You can hear it on the album, you can hear it when you hear them play the tunes live. The tunes are good enough and the sound is second to none, it just had horrible execution, imo.

Riot Act has better music on it than No Code.. sorry. Besides In My Tree, I'll take it live over No Code any day.

In My Tree is my favorite song, but besides Present Tense and In My Tree, I think Riot Act is a better album musically.

    Yep. Riot Act>No Code

Can't Keep and an interesting fun second half give Riot Act the edge. Case closed

Well, an album is only gonna sound so good. The mixing/mastering on RA is just absurdly good. I don't really think No Code sounds that good and they completely redid Ten.

Yield is unbeatable and Vitalogy, Biaural, and Vs are as close as you can get that. RA is perfect for what it is, but it doesn't have as much musical depth as the rest.

S/T had horrible mastering on the digital versions, but the vinyl sounds fantastic.

What is your definition of "inspired"? Life Wasted, to me, is the most generic riff they've ever written. There is nothing to it. It's three chords that go back and forth. The tempo is medium and boring. There is no melody to speak of.

Marker is okay but where is the riff? It's just Mike thrashing at a chord. The chorus is totally butt-rock.

Those songs just don't do it for me...not even close...sorry. Give me Riot Act any day of the week.

Well I LOVE Life Wasted and I LOVE Riot Act, so we can't relate.. sorry, you are an alien to me. :P

Half-assed? What a load of fucking codswallop! It is NOT HALF ASSED!! (Only one song on it, Help Help). The rest of it's great to listen to. And I love listening to anything off RA live. Would like to hear more, and off Binaural too.

I may have my criticisms of Riot Act (despite my extreme love for the album), but none of those would pertain to it being a half-assed attempt at an album. If anything, Riot Act's fault is that it tries too hard...

  • ive grown to love Riot Act, but only live. the album still sucks to me. I blame Ed.

I do think Ed half assed it or i heard he was sick. I remember Mike saying on one song he was just playing around on a rehearsal waiting for the final take, and Ed said that was the final.

I don't get the sense that Ed half-asses anything he does- especially not on an album that was supposedly the band's "Riot Act" against the then-present administration. I'll say it again, I think RA tried too hard to be a political statement rather than a PJ album... if that makes sense.

    maybe. still Ed though ;)

for some reason on this album he sounds so different. like he's trying to sound like Mark Lanegan or something. very morose.
