Why do so many black people defend mike vick?

  • I've got a new question, too:

Why do so many white people on AMT feel they are qualified to speak on behalf of black people?

Most of this thread has been:

    Black people do this...
    Black people do that...
    Black people think this...
    Black people think that...
    Black people like this guy...
    Black people hate that guy...

And it all appears to be coming from white people.

Perhaps part of the racial problem in America is that too many people see too many other ethnicities as a unified group. If you asked the average white person to sum up white people in the U.S. they might tell you there are a million different types. If you asked that same person to sum up black people or Muslims, there's a good chance they'll have a canned, one-size-fits-all answer.

(and I just appear to have lumped white Americans into one group. I'll save you all the time and automatically deduct myself 10 points).
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

A very high percentage of these athletes are arrogant but does that really matter to most football fans, probably not. I'm sure before MV's troubles he was cheered even with all that arrogance in Atlanta. In the Not For Long league it's all about JUST WIN NOW BABY especially now in Philly. Those who would spit on this guy after his sentencing are now I'm sure rooting for his success and the teams success regardless of what he so wrongly did in his past.

Hopefully he can become a better person and teach others to learn from his mistakes.

I'm not racist, but it's the whole OJ thing all over again...

I remember that travesty. White people were horrified with verdict, while black people rejoiced. At 15 I didn't understand it, and I still don't.

    Isn't murder wrong?

By the way, he was 100% guilty if you have half a brain.

P.S. Vick is a Grade A piece of shit. I hope he has a career-ending injury.

I am so depressed that this thread is on the Pearl Jam website. So fierce is the stupidity, ignorance, and stereotyping that it's making me sick. Even more depressing is that know1 actually had a good point in asking when does someone qualify as "black". If I were to guess the opinions of most people on this thread it's the "one drop rule", and that anyone of color better shut their mouths about inequality in this country because we got a black president. A few possible answers to questions posed on here:

    1. Why would anyone play the race card?
Typical racist spewing by reducing an individuals skin color to a poker game. It's not a motherfucking card it's a reality that minorities receive differential treatment than those who qualify as white in the justice system, going for jobs, and in the media. How is it, for example, that Ben Roethlesburger has a higher Q rating than Tiger Woods, Lebron James, and Michael Vick? The Monster takes his cop friends out stays sober, liquors a girl up, rapes her in the bathroom after she's bombed with the cops barring the door, and the barowner mysteriously loses the video tape. You want to talk about playing the race card...playing the race card is not having to do it because most people in power have the same skin color as you and will cover things up for you without it becoming a major deal. Seriously Vick gets 2 years for killing dogs, and Rapeface gets 4 games for fucking some girl in the bathroom against her will. Yeah he wasn't convicted but that brings me to question 2.

    2. If I understood this correctly "part of it is economics but black people are naturally more inclined to being violent"?
Again this goes back to the idea of their being some sort of natural "blackness" out there as if we can even define who is/is not black. People the human genome project has completely refuted the idea of any natural differences is people based on the color of their skin. Black people don't have the jumping gene, violent gene, or robbery gene, and more than white people don't have the ownership gene, intelligence gene, and stay away from cop gene. It's the way society views and treats crimes that white people and minorities tend to commit. Minorities tend to be poorer and tend to commit crimes that are more easily prosecuted and taken care of in the court system. However, who is the bigger criminal, the fuck that owns the Cavaliers who made his money by giving out bad bank loans effectively crippling America, Tom Benson, the owner of the Saints who took 500 million dollars from the US to fix that shithole stadium in New Orleans so that white people could get back to their fun, the dicks that own the Nationals who responded to the cities complaints about building a 500 million dollar stadium by upping it to 717 million, or the guy on the corner selling drugs? Seems to me they are all connected but only one is getting charged and prosecuted for these crimes.

I could go on, but I'm sure I just don't understand what it's like to be a white man in America with everyone taking advantage of the system but me. Oh wait...

I'm not sure Vick was well liked here before the Dog fighting came out.
He was our quarterback, should he have been? that was even debated and I think his popularity could have been drawn on racial lines to some degree which is unfortunate but comes down to his arrogance again and how he treated the fans.
He was kind of a hot dog, no pun intended, undependable, immature, full of himself. He was also a bit of a poor sport which comes with immaturity.
    Humble pie? I hope so.
My feel has always been though that he is humbled because he was caught not because it was wrong. If you were not raised to respect animals you will never understand cruelty.
Many in our culture still don't see dog fighting as wrong, here is where we must teach the children.
Right and wrong is learned young. He is in a position to make a difference now with the young people. I hope he does.

Add to your Roethlisberger rant guys like Tom Brady - he's a hero to a lot of people, yet he ditched his long-time girlfriend for a model when she (the girlfriend, not the model) got pregnant. Then he married the model, and someone (security guards, I think) fired shots at members of the media covering the wedding. Brett Favre was a hero to every sportswriter out there, a guy who "played the game like a kid" - yet everyone knew he was also a drunk who had a prescription drug problem. That bit of news was, by and large, swept under the rug - he didn't turn into a bad guy until he dicked around deciding whether or not to retire. Yet somehow these guys are more popular and have a higher Q rating than someone like Chad Ochocinco, whose biggest crime to date has been goofy touchdown celebrations and a reality TV show.

Speaking of Benson, that one always makes me laugh - he gets a ton of good publicity now for helping "save" New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina by helping to rebuild the city... the media appears to have forgotten that he tried very hard to use Katrina as an excuse to move the Saints to either San Antonio or Mississippi. He wanted to get out of the Crescent City, and the team only stayed A) because he couldn't come to an agreement with San Antonio or Mississippi, and B) because the state of Louisiana entered into a shady deal with him where they moved a bunch of state agencies into a building Benson owns so they pay him rent at over 10x the going rate for the area the building is in.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

ESPN can't say what the suspension is really for because then they could get sued for slander. Remember, the local prosecutor never filed any charges against Rothlesberger. Ben received a suspension from the NFL, but only because he failed to uphold the NFL's ethics code, which pretty much covers anything that sheds negative light on the NFL.

In regards to whether Ben received preferential treatment over Vick because the color of his skin, it has more to do with available evidence and witnesses rather then race. Ben got out of trouble (in the court of law) because he and his friends kept their mouths shut, the witnesses were drunk and impaired, and Ben immediately hired the attorney who kept Ray "Stabby" Lewis out of jail for murder. The local prosecutor knew he was screwed and that Ben's well-paid legal team would rip him to shreds so he ending up doing something savvy . . . he basically provided a tell-all of statement of what Ben did and let the court of public opinion hang him.

Vick on the other hand had a river of evidence against him. The houses, the websites, graveyards, torture equipment, friends turning state witness, etc.

As a W.M.A., I think what Ben has done to women in the past is much, much worse then what Vick did.

how can the court of public opinion hang him when the sports networks aren't even telling her side of the story?

i heard things like "misconduct", but he was accused of rape, that is kind of an important detail to be leaving out.

kind of a big deal. and you can't get sued for slander if you're for saying something that is true. because isn't that what he was charged with? rape?

big ben was charged with sexual assault early on and nothing big came of it other than the pros. laying out wha he knew and made open to the public what happened:
well the public like 10 of us that cared to check the cop report found out it was fucked up. he was sober, dead sober, got an underage girl drunk then had his sober friends bar the door while he had his way with her in bathroom sick fuck. you can talk all you want about rape stands and electrocuting dogs but that's jacked up.

rothlisberger was not supported in nearly the same fashion that Vick was. In fact I think most people who heard about the case, white, black, brown, green, yellow, red, chartreuse think he is a jackass. I really don't think it was a black/white issue...I realize I cannot look through the eyes of a minority to understand fully the scope of how any person may feel so my view may be short-sided, I just don't see a concerted effort to denigrate "black" men here.

If you have HD or, if not, the blur in the background on your set you would get my point there is an overwhelming number of white people (whatever that means) that have the means and time to spend going to football games. I was more referring to the fact that the place was a refuge for the poor minorities after Katrina and we gave 500 million to the dude so that football could be played there and the people that were housed inside previously still don't have a place to live...they got football though...at least they have that going for them.

True and he's not bankrupt with bruised cartilage in his sternum too. I always laugh when we pick on athletes getting away with crap when in reality it's really just rich people who get away with crap - athletes just happen to have 24-hour news coverage while CEOs can slink off into the sunset.

The NFL appears to be a league that gives second chances and Michael Vick seems to making the best of it. Especially with the performance he put on Monday night. He'll need to continue those performances in that he owes $20 million to creditors and the NFL players are facing a possible lockout next year.
