I'm not a Phish fan but enjoy their music and downloaded 3 shows they gave away FOR FREE on their official bootleg site.

Now i'm on their mailing list and every morning after a show you get an email with a link to download the show with lots of options/formats.

EXTREMELY well done and PJ should look at it as a model for them.
+1. livephish.com is phenomenally organized, and altogether a great effort. They also offer deals for buying multiple-night runs.

Im not gonna touch this, but Ive never understood why people like Phish
Ive given their music a chance and trey is a good guitarist, but the music just doesn't do it for me
but they do a lot for their fans which is cool

I still don't get their music having been to a show - but they know how to make a concert into a real experience. The light show, which is second to none, is worth the price of admission on its own in my opinion. I was talking to a friend, though, and I was saying how great it would be for them to have a screen just focused on their light guy doing his thing during the show.

Phish can take you on a journey, musically, that few other bands can even come close to doing. Pearl Jam is a different sort of escapism. I get emotionally drawn into PJ shows with the music and the lyrics and the power of the 2. Phish's lyrics are 95% goofy. It's not meant to be deep. But when you combine the whimical lyrics with unbelievable technical prowess and the potential to gel as a band and launch into monster jams with epic peaks and valleys....that is where Phish shines. If you dig the kind of music they play, it seems like sometimes there are no bounds as to where they can take you sometimes. We've nver seen a band entirely like Phish, and we probably never will.

In the scheme of things, PJ and Phish are incredibly alike...and miles apart in many aspects as well.

I dunno, must be the drugs, perhaps the music and the lights together, along with some hallucinogenics, it all comes together.

Has 0% to do with drugs. I go to Phish shows sober, save the occassional beer.

I went to Darien Lake last week. I haven't listened to them in years but now I remember why I used to love them in high school.

I know, it sounds strange, and I can't really explain it, but being there and just soaking everything in - I appreciated it differently than just listening to their music or a live bootleg of theirs at home. I will definitely see them again, but I don't listen to a lot of their music at home at all.

sounds a lot like a band I used to enjoy several times a year, except for the unbelievable technical prowess

What's this thread supposed to be about? Oh, yeah...

    Iron Maiden - "Killers"
The Hold Steady - "Separation Sunday"
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - "Murder Ballads"
    UFO - "Lights Out"
    Funkadelic - "Maggot Brain"
Rolling Stones - "Let It Bleed"
  • The Who - Quadrophenia
    Soundgarden - SuperUnknown
Metallica - ....And Justice For All

And if anyone wants a introduction to Phish, The Hampton's Comes Alive box set is just fantastic, the addition of the horns takes the songs to another level, i think. And Trey is not a loser he is one of the best guitar players these ears have ever heard.

+1. Trey's technique is through the roof. Makes Mike look like an amateur in my opinion - though Mike's got more soul in his little pinky than Trey does in his guitar playing (once again, just my opinion)!

Trey vs. Mike? Reminds me of the old debate from high school: Randy Rhoads vs. Jimi Hendrix. You really can't go wrong with either one of them.

And yes, "Hampton Comes Alive" could serve as a great intro to Phish, but 6 CDs/5+hours might be a bit much to take in all at once.
  • True, Hampton's might be overwhelming, and a bit pricey. I guess A Live One would be the easiest. And that version of Chalkdust is ridiculous.

Truthfully, to get someone into Phish, I'd just suggest going on Youtube for any of the Hampton footage available in Youtube HD... take this one for example... Mike's Song -> Hydrogen

From the top of my head, I think these could be pulled off:

    - Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
    - Mother Love Bone - Apple
    - Neil Young - Mirror Ball

And, from the less realistic department:

    - AC/DC - Back in Black
    - Cake - Fashion Nugget
    - Metallica - Black Album

    Cake, love it.

I was fortunate enough to see them live this May at the 9:30 Club in D.C.

They are a great live band.

John McCrea stated how he finally gained all rights to their music and will no longer be using a record label adding a new album is coming soon.

Fashion Nugget is a gem, Open Book has to be my favorite, well crafted lyrics.

    A band worth seeing.
  • I'd love to hear PJ covering a Replacements album, maybe Tim or Sorry Ma!

I started to enjoy Phish again at Mountain View, which was a reasonably strong performance (with some notable low points). They were absolutely terrible during the Hiatus Interruptus period but they're starting to figure out the "mature band" thing. I have to admit I have a hard time with almost anything they wrote after 2000, it's just not nearly on the level of their older music, but maybe they'll figure out how to get some of the newer songs in synch and just drop the terrible mistake that was Undermind from their repertoire altogether.
Your reality, sir, is lies and balderdash and I’m
delighted to say that I have no grasp of it whatsoever.
  • I love how almost none of you are even responding to the original topic.

Getting back to what this thread is supposed to be about... I would like to see them cover:

    Mad Season
    Black Crowes: Southern Harmony
Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here

The last one would be my ultimate wish (no pun intended). It would be so different for them, so empty and deliberate compared to what they do. But I think it would be an incredible opening set. Imagine Shine On You Crazy Diamond ending and then leading into a rip-roaring fast-paced song like Go, Animal or SOLAT. I don't know, I think it would different enough to be very cool. Obviously wouldn't happen though.

And if you ask Stone, they clearly aren't old enough to be easing into the whole Pink Floyd groove yet...
