    Radio stations that play the same song more than a few times a day are usually pretty shitty anyways. I mean, there is more than 10 songs out there..

    I'm not sure this is what the other poster meant, but ... if you are actually hearing, with your own ears, a certain song on a certain radio station 4 or 5 times a day, it's a safe bet it is getting played a lot more than that. I mean, I suppose it could just so happen that the ONLY times you hear a song on a radio station coincidentally are the only 4-5 times it was played all day, but it's highly unlikely.

    I mean, maybe he meant that he listened to a radio station for 24 consecutive hours and heard the Fixer 4 or 5 times. More likely, he means he heard it 4 or 5 times during the few hours in a day that he is actually around a radio. But I don't want to speak for him.

    To actually hear a song 4-5 songs during the course of a given day ... that's like "Friends in Low Places" circa 1990. It's a safe bet the song IS getting a ton of airplay on that station. I mean, I don't even hear that horrible new Black Eyed Peas song 4 or 5 times a day.

    Either way you look at it, radio stations are not going to shove a song down your throat unless it is getting a lot of requests. I mean, the album isn't even out yet. Didn't Kings of Leon new cd come out last September? Sex on Fire took off during the winter.. I remember hearing it a handful of times on the radio right when the album came out, and then not again for a few months and then it exploded.

    If The Fixer becomes a hit, it probably won't happen until sometime after the album comes out, or at least a few more weeks from now.

    They plan this stuff so the single is actually for sale when people are starting to catch on and want it.

    Hell, Jeremy wasn't a hit until like a year after Ten was released. I know they weren't known, but I'm sure the music was out there.

    Like I said, the single isn't even for sale yet.. they know what they are doing. If it gets a lot of airplay in the first month or two, its only because of the name Pearl Jam. If it becomes an actual hit, it could take months to take off.

    As far as I know, this "pop" song has only been released to rock stations. It could be a little out of place right now, but is getting play because the rock stations will play the name Pearl Jam, while pop and adult contemporary stations won't quite play it yet.

    I'm pretty sure the same thing happened with American Idiot by Green Day. It was months before that took off. I heard American Idiot a few dozen times, and then they stopped playing it, then months later the album exploded.

    This is all going to be interesting to watch once whatever is going to happen with target happens. The big cities drive the spin numbers because there are not that many true alternative or rock stations anymore. So heavy play in Philly, LA, and NY is enough to go top 5. As far as it being that high, all of the other songs around them other than Notion have been out for quite awhile and are declining in rotations, while Fixer is still climbing. It is up ten spots on the mainstream rock charts on all access. A song being played nationally 200 times in a week is good enough for top ten on the rock charts. Alternative requires 1200 spins. Top 40/Pop requires 5000 plays for top ten. So if you do not have a station dedicated to alternative or new rock you probably won't hear it but it can be popular by these relative terms.

    The Target commercial is going to introduce the song to the other 99% of this country that aren't listening to alternative rock stations. It will be interesting to see what happens.

    Think of this stage as the teaser for the song. Just wait until it is actually for sale, and then give it some time.

    I don't think you listened to much Creed. Which, come to think of it, is probably a good thing. But that song sounds nothing like a Creed song.

    Just think of all the lonely housewives out there who were once fans back in the early nineties, maybe millions. When they see Ed and Jeff jamming with their shirts off on the Target commercial between their favorite daytime soaps, they are going to want to add some excitement back into their lives. They are going to hear a catchy song, and want rekindle their rebellious youth. They are going to want to be cool again. They are going to pick up the CD along with some bathroom towels and all-purpose cleaner on their next trip to Target.. They are going to want to get it back again. ;)

    i dont know what successful means exactly, but I'd say Given To Fly. its the last song i still occasionally hear on radio.
