Was there any intro music?? Master/ Slave perhaps?
Yeah...but it wasn't "Master/Slave." I believe (don't quote me on this) it was the tinkling-sounding Brian Eno song from c2005; the droning bass note came first, then the tinkling, then Pearl Jam. If that makes sense. Definitely "Lost in the Supermarket" as the playout tune.

This tread just makes me so happy and excited for Philly. I can't remember being so excited to hear this band play new songs - brother, the real me, the fixer and got some - seriously, they just keep getting better.
Was 3 back from the front on Stone's side for most of the day until the show started. First time seeing PJ, and first time to a gen admission show like this, and I was not prepared at all for the pit. After losing my glasses and almost losing my shoes, I figured I'd get more enjoyment being a bit further back, where I could actually see what was going on on stage and not being knocked around.
As others have said, it was an amazing show. I absolutely look forward to the next time I will get an opportunity to see them. I think my highlight was Spin the Black Circle. Maybe it was the lights, but WOW, they blew me (and I'm sure just about everyone else) away. Hearing Sad was also awesome.
I hope I never see another concert with text messages scrolling across big screens... Holy SHIT was that distracting and annoying as hell....I was trying not to even look at the screens, but some of the closeups are cool to see...
Mike had me in a trance during Black...just before the 'I know someday you'll have a beautiful life" part, I look at the screen...and the words "I just farted" scroll across the top....being male, it made me giggle....my friend saw me laugh and asked what happened....couldn'tn hear me, so I had to tell him again, we ended up yapping for like 20 seconds during the best part of the song. fucking stupid thing. I have a few complaints about the festival itself, mostly about the setup...but...
PJ rocked as always.. Cool to see the Fixer played for the first time...Got Some slayed....some new gear, Brother, Real Me...They seemed to be in good spirits...Ed had some vintage drunken wise-ass type comments (mentioning the guy with the kid on his shoulders...then saying how tough some guys were to be holding their gf's up....'especially that one girl'..or something like that.) His 'is it EVER going to get dark?' improv cracked me up....if this show had been closer to solstice, it might not have been dark by curfew
And who knew that Stone really has been paritally animated all this time, we just couldn't tell without the hair! you can tell he's lovin head banging with the locks gettin longer
.... EDDIE TEASED US!! ....HE said they were going to play a realllly old song
because the venue was a former olympic site he said "i"ll give you guys the gold medal ,no wait i'll give u olympic platinum" i thought they were going to play olympic platinum and i started to freak out!!!
Olympic Platinum was a song on one of their old fanclub singles from 1996 i think... instead we got Brother which was still nice to hear
Before they played RATS eddie began to strum the opening cords from the song"BEN" from Micheal jackson, in which RATS pays homage to with the line "Ben, the two of us need look no more" eddie was a BiG motown fan when he was younger and i guess he was paying tribute to Micheal in some way
THE REAL ME was the second last song of the night and it fucking rocked!!!!
Eddie said the first concert he ever went to ,the band played this song at the very end of their set and he never will forget it

Pearl Jam is a big fish, no doubt about it. A true Moby Dick of modern rock.
And for a world class event like the Virgin Festival, which sells itself on its ability to reel in the biggest fish in the alternative rock sea, that means everything.
So Pearl Jam was a considerable catch for Virgin and a big score all around Saturday at Canada Olympic Park on day one of the Virgin Festival’s second year in Calgary.
They lived up to their legend too, with a fantastically explosive show that included grunge era bedrock like Why Go, Even Flow and Daughter along with fine newer tunes like Big Wave, Unemployable and even The Fixer off their upcoming album Backspacer, set to be released in September.
Unless I'm mistaken this was Pearl Jam's first full-on concert gig in many months, but, to be sure, their was no rust on this machine.
Frontman Eddie Vedder's voice was as strong as it's ever been, his delivery as fiery and passionate as the rock preacher man he strives to be. Guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McReady were just as sharp and Matt Cameron, one of the most lethal drummers to emerge from the grunge era, drove the band relentlessly.
Mind you, the Seattle band’s prominence was made all the more significant considering that no other act this weekend comes close to them in terms of their sheer magnitude.
Compare that to some of Virgin’s other Canadian stops this summer – Toronto in particular, where Nine Inch Nails, Pixies and Ben Harper are among the acts set to perform – and you can see why Virgin has taken its share of criticisms in this city.
It didn’t help matters that they took such an annoyingly long time to announce their lineup and show dates either.
The move from last year's Fort Calgary venue to COP is another strike against Virgin in this writer's opinion. Fort Calgary was a far better venue for an event like this. It was easier to access and it just seemed much more user friendly and roomy than COP. The logistics of holding a concert on the side of a ski slope can be awkward.
It's a shame about those crybaby noise complaints that came down on the Fort Calgary event last year.
To be sure though, there was much to enjoy about Virgin’s Saturday showing other than just Pearl Jam.
Canadian electronic outfit Thunderheist were an early highlight with their garage greasy dance grooves. Hamilton's Arkells were impressive too, their spirited alt-rock tunes grabbing the crowd's attention and their command of the big stage keeping it.
Toronto hip-hop star k-os was excellent, playing a smart, funky set, rich with surprisingly hard hitting beats and even incorporating riffage from the heavy likes of Rush and Led Zeppelin. New k-os tunes like Burning Bridges, meanwhile, held their own next to established favourites like Man I Used To Be.
As for the much-loved Wintersleep from Halifax, I have to admit this is a band I've often struggled with, finding them rather too earnest, self-indulgent and even ponderous. (Mind you, this is all stuff that has been said about Pearl Jam at times too. And, at time, rightfully so).
Still, Wintersleep won me over onstage, where their densely layered, almost prog-rockish sonics came to life vividly.
But there was no question that a huge majority of the crowd of 19,000 had come to see Pearl Jam far above all else. At press time, as the band burned its way towards the encore, with stunning versions of Alive, Do The Evolution and the acoustic gem Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town, the reason for that couldn't have been more clear.
- Best song of the night played was Brother....they fucking nailed it....I have video of the entire song....amazing....

I don't have much to add about this show that hasn't already been said. I was front/centre and it was indescribable. Both because the boys were amazing and the crowd was amazingly violent. I barely survived.
I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet but Stone played a bit of Brick in the Wall after Daughter (I believe it was before WMA). I thought we'd get a full cover but it was just a few bars.
Some of the reviews I've read have said that Ed was "spacey" but I thought he was just having a really good time and was more personable with the crowd than I've ever seen him be before. He was actually really funny. And the picture of him on the front page of Sunday's Calgary Sun is a horrible shot. Makes him look about 40 pounds overweight. I have no idea why they would've run that.
Ah well, a fantastic set and we got some new stuff. Oh, and I got Mike's f**king setlist!!

Start to finish the show was awesome..Got some was a definite highlight, as was The Real Me and Brother. The Fixer was hot live too.
Hope they play the 'Dome again ASAP.
The show was the 4th time I have seen PJ but the 1st outside and it was FANTASTIC! The sound was so much better than Rexall in Edmonton and GM PLace in Vancouver.
I went thru a lot to get there from Edmonton a 3 hr drive on that darn deadly Highway#2, tooo many close calls and the Olypmic Park is a monterous ski place; the terrain is so uneven, it's like a WIPE-OUT zone for people who have visited the beer gardens near the top of the hill so there's no avoiding it, LOL. But no matter what, PJ always puts on a GREAT entertaining show. I thought Eddie was going to jump into the mosh pit as he climbed the trusses. Next time you are in the Province, PLEASE..... come to Edmonton
Great job, Herald! I know I loved hearing Mike McCready play "Big Wave" on Saturday!

Great show, i also loved when eddie said at about 8:30pm "Its gonna get dark here soon." then about half hour later he asked the crowd "Does it ever get dark here?" "let there be light, then there was light" "let there be beer, then there was beer." lol too funny. There so professional too i love it when they all bow together!!

Crowd shots from before PJ hit the stage. It got pretty intense after this, especially on Stone's side.

Grunge god Eddie Vedder rocks Calgary
