What an amazing show! Front row Mike's side. Got to hang with our friend Scott the relayer who btw missed a family wedding reception to be there.

    Lot's of great highlights...

The Fixer and Got Some especially Got Some = really good

During Rats and Ben the two of us... Ed did a shoulder to shoulder cross over his heart

Spin the Black Circle was nuts!!!

The Real Me = unexpected... Ed mentioned when he was a teen that song was played as a closer at his first show

Lot's of crowd surfing moshing Douche bags
My spine will never be the same but worth it!

We'll post some more pics on http://twitter.com/RedLightning
Got some shots of Ed climbing the truss

  • Scott the relayer here... What an amazing night! Was on Mike's side against the rail with Breath_Gal and a few others. Once in a lifetime, that's for sure. Got a bit sketched out just before they came on as the crowd was surging HARD towards the stage. They did it for about half the setlist and then calmed down. 7 hours of drinking later:) Show was unbelievable. Boys were loose but pretty tight musically. Like they had never left, really! New songs are killer live. Got Some is the stronger of the two in my opinion, but The Fixer is pretty awesome live also. Couple of notes to add to Breath_Gal's comments:

    1. Venue was a the bottom of a small-ish ski hill, parking was at the top. You can do the math:)
    2. About 3 songs in Ed says (might be missing a few words), "So usually we keep these things a surprise, but we're feeling pretty good tonight so we'll just tell you. We're gonna play a song we've never played live before, and a couple of songs that are old enough to drive. This is a newborn." Cue The Fixer.
    2. WMA tag in Daughter: Ed sings "White Male CANADIAN"
    3. Ed quote: "We picked a flight to Europe with a stop over in Calgary because we were told there would be a festival of Virgins. Virgin Fest and not a Jonas Brother in sight."
    4. First encore Ed comes out and says, "We're at Olympic Park, and I have to say that we'd give you a gold medal for this evening. No, actually, we'd give you an Olympic Platinum" - causing me and anyone who has ever heard that song to link his first comments about a song they've never played live before.
    5. Instead they played Brother and everything was right in the world:)
    6. Ed comes on after the second encore and tells the crowd that they've been told they can break curfew and play the songs the way they want to play 'em.
    7. PJ rips out The Real Me and totally kicks its ass.

Brother sounded great, Rats was a nice surprise, and the new tunes are awesome.

All in all a great night! Thanks to BeerBaron for uploading the pics and texts.

    Enjoy the tour!!

    Grunge legends in fine form

Pearl Jam fans treated to powerful performance

    By LISA WILTON

    Last Updated: 9th August 2009, 1:49am

There was only one reason why Trevor Bowen was at Canada Olympic Park yesterday afternoon.

    "Pearl Jam," he said enthusiastically.

"I've been waiting 10 years to see these guys," said the 32-year-old super fan.

Eighteen-year-old David Charlton was also eager to see the veteran Seattle group, although he admitted he had only been a fan for a matter of months.

"My brother has a bunch of their older CDs and I just started listening to them," said Charlton, who was sporting a Pearl Jam T-shirt.

Bowen and Charlton were among 15,000 people who made their way to COP for the second annual Calgary Virgin Music Festival, which boasted one of Pearl Jam's first outdoor festival performances of the year.

The legendary group took the stage as clouds rolled in after a hot afternoon and were greeted by an appreciative roar and the chants of "Pearl Jam!"

They were in fine form, although perhaps not at the top of their game. However, Eddie Vedder and the boys didn't disappoint with their solid two-hour set.

Swigging from a bottle of wine, singer Vedder suffered a few bum notes, but for the most part his vocal chords were in great shape as he belted out some of Pearl Jam's best-loved hits, including Why Go and Even Flow in his inimitable tremulous, pleading style.

The first part of the set was heavy with lesser known tracks and more recent songs, which went over well, but they just whet the crowd's appetite for the big hits.

Vedder was laid back, almost spacey, and tried to be a calming influence on the heaving moshpit near the front.

Pearl Jam was obviously the biggest draw of the day -- if not the entire weekend -- and I'm perplexed as to why some fans think it's acceptable to throw assorted junk at the stage.

It's completely disrespectful to the band and makes Calgary concertgoers look like a bunch of buffoons.

It was also disappointing to witness the apathy of a significant portion of the crowd towards the rest of yesterday's lineup.

Sure, most of the opening acts are in Calgary at least once or twice a year, but they still deserved a better reception.

[end PJ related stuff - edited by me, check the link if you want to read the rest :) ]

While the change in location from Fort Calgary last year to Canada Olympic Park allowed for more room to roam, there wasn't much in terms of great atmosphere.

Straw laid down to cover any muddy areas made it feel as if you were in the middle of a farm and the incline of the hill made it a little difficult to stand for an extended length of time.

Still, the festival was generally well organized with bands taking the stage like clockwork.

The 2009 Virgin Music Festival wraps up today with sets by Canadian acts Tokyo Police Club, Metric and Billy Talent and more.

It is VERY RARE to have a soundcheck at a festival. There are other acts performing at the time that they would normally do the soundcheck, which is usually between 3 and 4 pm.

  • Just to clarify some things in that article... I wouldn't have called Ed "spacey" by any means. If I were characterizing the boys in any way at this point I'd say that they're less on a mission, and more out to enjoy being a band that can still play to 30,000 people (no disrespect to some other great bands there, but...). The crowd was super intense to start things off which understandably made Ed nervous. A few comments to the crowd early on about being ok.

<Ed looking at pushing, surging crowd> "We're going to be here a while so I'd like to establish some ground rules. Everything looks good here. You in the back look good, you in the middle, you're good to. But it's this little pocket right here (points to middle front) that I'm worried about. We need to establish some communication, okay? <Nothing from crowd, Ed looks at them again with a bit of a smile> OKAY? <Crowd yells back okay>. Perfect. Now watch out for each other."

A few songs later some people were moving barricades and he pointed to the area and asked, "Everything okay there? You're moving some big barricades there - that's a lot of metal on a lot of flesh (or something). Can I get a thumbs up?"

After that things chilled out. I wouldn't say that the forgetting lyrics thing was really something to note. I have more than a few mid-tour boots where there were fewer words remembered:)

To those who were asking about Mike's microphone - he sang back-up on numerous tunes.
