The list includes Rival and says Dakota. I'm assuming that's the name of the dog growling at the beginning. Unless a Dakota is something i've never heard of.

Hmm. not sure i have ever noticed the tea kettle blowing its top on NFY. where at in the song ?
If you listen to the CD you'll hear it more clearly. On youtube you can barely hear it at the 0:16 - 0:25 mark. I thought everyone knew about that one...
Okay, so i just listened to it here at work on the ipod. I had heard that sound but didnt know it was a kettle.
thats cool. i guess i always just figured it was a controlled feedback of a guitar or mic.
when my band use to cover this song my guitar player did it with controlled feedback.
thanks.
Peace, Love.

“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
The one I'm trying to figure out is what's making the whale sounds on... you guessed it, "The Whale Song"! I'm leaning towards the same device Ed used to alter his voice during the Daughter tag from LO2L- whatever that was.

When Mike spoke with Seattle’s 103.7 FM earlier this week, he relayed this information. I guess O' Brien pushed them in that direction. The song is a ballad written by Eddie and is reminiscent of his 'Into the Wild' stuff. It's on Backspacer, by the way.

I believe it's a boiling kettle - which would fit with the tense song lyrics.

I think it was on Release as well as that was the first time I had ever heard of an e-bow.
Other strange sound... Wasn't there a whip or something at the beginning of Satan's Bed. Also didn't they add record player-like static/rumble to most of Vitalogy to emulate typical tracking problems evident with vinyl.

Put on the headphones and listen to Sleight of Hand. At about the 2:40 mark you'll hear something that sounds like ghosts floating between your ear drums. I know it's just Ed, but still... shivers.
Oh yeah, and isn't "Get Right" chock full of clapping hands. Listen to Faithfull on headphones and you can hear Ed speak the words he is about to sing on the last verse. If I am not making any sense, just listen to the last verse and you'll know.

I love that part of Faithful. I always thought it was someone besides Ed, though.
i don't think that's a sitar mate. they are playing the strings on the headstock of the guitar.
No, no. It really is a sitar. Honest. I got the info from an article on Twofeetthick.com titled "Do Any Pj albums have Hidden Tracks?" (the article no longer exists, blast it). Jonathan Cohen asks Jeff what instrument is being played on the hidden track. He says it is a snippet from a weird little ditty by Ed playing the sitar.
people keep saying hidden track, but isn't it that particular one a coda?
This may be a little off-topic, but I always loved the beginning of "Brain of J." when they stop for a second and restart. Anyone know who it is that says "sorry" at the beginning of the track?
Sounds like Mike on that.. and the 1-2-3-4 that precedes it. awesome beginning, right!

I referred to it as a "Hidden Thingy" and I stand by that. But seriously, I'd really like to hear the entire song (or experiment) from where that "coda" was taken. I mean, why not?
Comments
Yep. Dakota provided the canine vocal.
Don't know if you can hear it on a song -- anyone?
