Just want to ask those on this thread their feelings about the following:

    1) Is selling exclusively thru Target (plus mom-n-pop stores and online) selling out?

    2) Is having "Bud Light Presents Pearl Jam" selling out?

    3) Is having huge screens on 2 sides of the stage which say "Verizon Wireless" selling out?

    4) Is having fliers handed out at venues with PJ's photo, and "Verizon Wireless" on it selling out?

Not looking for a lecture. Just looking for a yes or no on each of the four.

    :)

    1) what does this have to do with the music?

Target is their means to get it to people that don't have easy access to a computer, internet, credit card, mail and so on..

....now their like begging for it?

how are they " begging" for it?? not trying to start an argument, i'd just really like to know what they, as a band are doing that makes you feel like they're begging for attention? going on Conan? doing some interviews? striking a distribution deal with a big box store? seriously...i'd love some answers because i don't see anything drastically different. ok---they made a commercial. they've had commercials in the past. anyone??

Verizon wireless all over last tour. Yes, believe it or not the Target commercial is asking for attention. (I don't know how you would think differently?)
I have never seen a commercial advertizing a Pearl Jam album. So to me this is the first time.

I mean if they didn’t want the attention before…why now? It must be money. And that’s ok if that’s how they want to represent themselves and their music, but hey let’s be honest.

I don't understand the need for sponsorship from target commercial on TV? WTF!. They always were against this sort of thing. All this does is cheapen the music and make it a joke.

Why do they need to do it? Just release it where you can, how much money do they need?

I would think most of there fans would be pissed about this?
    I couldn't care less.

Nothing cheapened AC/DC's Black Ice. That was a solid album (oddly enough also produced by Brendan O'Brien), and had an exclusive deal with WalMart....and I hate Walmart. But it in no way impacted on my opinion of their new record.

They were with Sony for almost 20 years. Now they are doing it on their own and this is the best way to get it to the masses....as well as their own site and indie record stores.

Nothing be to upset about at all in my opinion.

even if they did sell their product exculsively at wal mart...............we would buy it.
live and let live...unless it violates the pearligious doctrine.
  • My assumption is that when an artist creates something, they want as many people as possible to enjoy and appreciate it. In 1991 to get the most people to hear their music Pearl Jam signed with Sony Records, in 2009 PJ signed with Target. It is the same but different. As for the Target "commercial", they did a live performance of one of their songs, they did not push Target products. In 1992 they filmed a video for Jeremy, in 2009 they did a live peformance of The Fixer for Target. Same thing just different. Times have changed and PJ has changed with them. They are not greedy or selling out. It is still about the music they are just being creative and trying to find new ways to distribute their music. They just want to get their music out their, make a little money doing it and fill up arenas to continue their amazing live shows. No big deal.

Exactly. until they start changing up there music its not selling out.

i dont care if a free PJ song came with every McDonald's Happy Meal, its only selling out if they change their music to better suit McDonald's.
  • the selling out thing is so funny to me. although things have changed, as of even 5 years ago...signing with a major label more or less was signing yourself into immediate debt. sure the label pays for things, but you have to pay every cent back to them. to give an idea...just to break even on a major label record, it has to go platinum. so the main income for bands is tours and merchandising. and they will make a slightly higher profit on albums sold at shows. (thats from maybe 5-10 cents each a record to maybe a dollar/dollar fifty each.) so the time they really started getting income was when they started doing bigger time shows.
i remember you...i was gonna vote for you one time...but voting isn't cool so i stayed home and got trashed on listerine.
