I haven't done extensive research, so forgive me if I'm wrong,...but isn't it true that they've struck a deal with Target to be the sole big store distributor for this new album. I don't think this would have been on their radar ten years ago.

I don't think this was on anyone's radar ten years ago. This type of deal is something that is fairly new to the art of selling music. It is just the nature of the beast now. In the last ten years how many record stores have closed shop? In this area i can think of several independent stores, and there was the musicland/samgoody chain that went under to. If you want to sell your product and make money you have to do what works, and right now that is these Exclusive deals.

I guess my point was I never envisioned them jumping on this bandwagon,... there is irony here, which could appear hypocritical to some.

No doubt we can all talk about economics, corporate and distribution structures of this deal,..obviously it benefits the boys of Pearl Jam.

    How is it hypocritical?

how is target any different than the album being distributed by sony? both are big corporations. the album has to be distributed somehow...or do you want the band to sell the album out of the back of their cars? how about a HUGE PEARL JAM BUS? people don't think.
10 years ago they had Sony to take care of selling the albums. They are doing it on their own and need to make their own deals this time.

excellent points...I really don't see what the big deal about the Target deal is

I watched an interview w/Prince on Tavis Smiley...this is what he said about about his exclusive deal w/Target: "Target is not a record company; they're a distributor and retail store, and a very good one at that. Thirty million people go through their stores every week, so they get a chance to pick up the "Lotusflow3r" record.

The beautiful thing about the relationship is that they're treating us like any other record company. They buy the same amount and they pay the same price, so we've done quite well already.

Bria's taken care of, I'm taken care of. I hope to do more deals like this with artists like Anita Baker and John Blackwell, Rhonda and Renato. We're trying to work on some jazz things right now. But time will tell."

It seems a few people forget that the guys are not just musicians but businessmen. Yes music is their art, but it is also their trade. They have families to feed, bills to pay, charities to support etc etc etc.
I assume they either approached or were approached by a number of different companies and Target suited them the best.
Over here in the UK they are being distributed by Island Records (a subsidary of Universal).

The Target deal is only for the US. In Canada you should be able to buy it from any place that sells cds.

From some article a number of weeks back:
Target will be their exclusive big-box seller (partner).
Their deal also accommodates mom-and-pop music stores selling their records.
    Also PJ can sell direct.

While I am not a fan of them taking on Bud Light and Verizon Wireless as tour sponsors (especially because of the HUGE deal they themselves made about it for so long) I'm not that opposed to them going with Target/Mom-N-Pop/PJ-website as their three ways of selling the music. (plus iTunes I assume)

I believe because of increased illegal downloading of their music, they needed to cut a deal to make more money per CD on the ones that are actually purchased.
There aren't any Target stores in Canada. Besides, it's been stated before that Universal is going to be handling the release outside of the US.

Target is the only major retailor that does NOT see the independent record stores as competitors.

Walmart/Best Buy feel they are in competition with mom and pop stores.

by distributing wiht Target, they can reach the masses while still supporting the independent record stores, something the band has always tried to do (support indie stores).

    Simple enough.

From all the replies,..seems most everyone is cool with it. There is an evolution, its only natural.
Family, kids, food on the table, etc has now become priority. But of course the music is still great, as always. :D

    Oye ve.

    Look at it this way....

They used to do business with Wal-Mart, Target, BestBuy, Costco, Kmart. Now its just Target, because Target allows them to deal with indie stores.

They probably make LESS MONEY this way.

I already posted in the other "delayed-reaction" thread. But , just to recap, major record stores are gone -- Virgin Megastore has closed its doors, Tower long since went online-only. While at first I too was outraged, I've gotten over it because the entire music business is in a MAJOR overhall. I think the only reason major record labels still exist is because they're all part of bigger corporate entities, like Sony which makes electronics, Warner which is just a giant media behemoth. Indie stores will still have Backspacer, so everything is cool. So we'll let PJ slide on this one, and keep a watchful eye on their next move.

is that why 10c ticket prices have gone up?

    (not trying to start shit)

if i'm paying more because pj got rid of their record company, i think i'm ok with that. :)
*~Pearl Jam will be blasted from speakers until morale improves~*

  • Its really easy to understand. When they put out an album they need to distribute the album to stores to sell the album. Pearl Jam is not under any kind of record contract so they do not have a label or a distributer. So, they chose Target as a way of distributing the new album to the masses that don't order online or have a local indy record store.

Notwithstanding any credibilty issues, a deal with Target is usually very beneficial to the band. They get national commercials run for the album, and,of great importance, Target agrees to buy a large number of units, and the band gets paid right away for all of the units sold to Target. Even if Target doesn't sell their entire stock, the band gets paid, so there are no weird computations that usually effect the band's royalty payments.

Under normal distribution deals, the band/label are at the mercy of the distributor for their share of the related royalties.

i dont really see how its so hypocritical. all their other albums are available at Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. so now i cant buy an album at Wal-mart, who cares?

no it would not have been on their radar 10 years ago. because they had a label to do that for them. if they were in this position of being label free like they are now, it probably would have.
i remember you...i was gonna vote for you one time...but voting isn't cool so i stayed home and got trashed on listerine.
