I don't understand the Target thing.

I'm from Canada, so I won't have to find the closest Target to buy Backspacer,..at least I hope not.
I just can't wrap my head around this arrangement with Target for the new album distribution.

I'm just afraid that it comes off as hypocritical.

It's a multi-prong approach. Selling through the fan club, and indie stores, as well as target.

So, the volume being sold through Target only takes away from other "big box" stores like Best Buy and Walmart, etc. So at least it's good in that respect.

Now, woudl I prefer to be able ot buy it anywhere...yep, but it's not nearly as bad as it first appeared.

I haven't done extensive research, so forgive me if I'm wrong,...but isn't it true that they've struck a deal with Target to be the sole big store distributor for this new album. I don't think this would have been on their radar ten years ago.

10 years ago they had Sony to take care of selling the albums. They are doing it on their own and need to make their own deals this time.

how is target any different than the album being distributed by sony? both are big corporations. the album has to be distributed somehow...or do you want the band to sell the album out of the back of their cars? how about a HUGE PEARL JAM BUS? people don't think.

From some article a number of weeks back:
Target will be their exclusive big-box seller (partner).
Their deal also accommodates mom-and-pop music stores selling their records.
    Also PJ can sell direct.

While I am not a fan of them taking on Bud Light and Verizon Wireless as tour sponsors (especially because of the HUGE deal they themselves made about it for so long) I'm not that opposed to them going with Target/Mom-N-Pop/PJ-website as their three ways of selling the music. (plus iTunes I assume)

I believe because of increased illegal downloading of their music, they needed to cut a deal to make more money per CD on the ones that are actually purchased.

Thats good for us,..I was wondering how the American fans feel about this arrangement.

I feel that maybe they're taking baby steps out of their socially aware non-commercial attitude of their 30's, and starting to dip their toes into new waters,...sorta like U2, Coldplay etc.

    order it from 10c......?????????????????
  • smobeesmobee Valparaiso Indiana Posts: 178
The only problem I have with them selling it only at Traget is this. If cd I order from 10C doesn't show by the time it hits store's, obviously I'm going to my local record store...oh wait, those don't exist around here anymore. I'll have to look for one. So if I can't find a local record store, I have to go to Target. Unfortuantly thats 25 - 30 minutes away. When I drive home, for the 30 minutes or so do I listen to it in the car or do I wait till I'm home, relaxing, and blaring it on the speakers? Wait, didn't Stone say it will be on itunes? I wont have to go anywhere. Download it and listen until CD arrives in mail! Thats what i'll do. If you are on this forrum, you know you can buy it here. Whats the big deal?

excellent points...I really don't see what the big deal about the Target deal is

I watched an interview w/Prince on Tavis Smiley...this is what he said about about his exclusive deal w/Target: "Target is not a record company; they're a distributor and retail store, and a very good one at that. Thirty million people go through their stores every week, so they get a chance to pick up the "Lotusflow3r" record.

The beautiful thing about the relationship is that they're treating us like any other record company. They buy the same amount and they pay the same price, so we've done quite well already.

Bria's taken care of, I'm taken care of. I hope to do more deals like this with artists like Anita Baker and John Blackwell, Rhonda and Renato. We're trying to work on some jazz things right now. But time will tell."

It seems a few people forget that the guys are not just musicians but businessmen. Yes music is their art, but it is also their trade. They have families to feed, bills to pay, charities to support etc etc etc.
I assume they either approached or were approached by a number of different companies and Target suited them the best.
Over here in the UK they are being distributed by Island Records (a subsidary of Universal).

There aren't any Target stores in Canada. Besides, it's been stated before that Universal is going to be handling the release outside of the US.

Target is the only major retailor that does NOT see the independent record stores as competitors.

Walmart/Best Buy feel they are in competition with mom and pop stores.

by distributing wiht Target, they can reach the masses while still supporting the independent record stores, something the band has always tried to do (support indie stores).

    Simple enough.

    Oye ve.

    Look at it this way....

They used to do business with Wal-Mart, Target, BestBuy, Costco, Kmart. Now its just Target, because Target allows them to deal with indie stores.

They probably make LESS MONEY this way.
