everybody knows this is nowhere Posts: 7,633
I swear this board gets dumber by the day! Tour announcement - whining and bitching. New song titles - whining and bitching. One song has the same name as a Coldplay song - end of the fuckin world! What's next? CD not shiny enough? Vinyl not round enough? So what if it's only 36 minutes long - "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" has only got 7 songs on it and it's still one of Neil Young's best albums 40 years after it was released.
This is all we need to worry about:
1. There's a new PJ cd coming soon - A GOOD THING!
2. It has new PJ songs on it - A GOOD THING
3. They have new names.
4. The names are made up of words pulled from the English language that the band obviously feel best represent the songs.
5. They will play these songs live over the coming months and years - A VERY GOOD THING!
6. THIS BAND STILL FUCKING ROCKS!!!

Song titles? Integrity? Wow.... how far fetched! PJ lost their integrity because they have a song called Supersonic? Well... I guess the loss of integrity/sell out business revolving around Target is a bit of old news so one had to come up with something else......
It is a funny (even if quite ridiculous) statement....

I have no problem with Target. I have never read song titles leading up to a PJ album where I paused and thought, "Wow, what a terrible title". Boring titles are not contrived titles.
It is not that the titles are "generic" or non-descript, it is that they are well known titles that have been done before, recently, by bad bands. Plus 'Sonic" is word that has been beten to to death for song titles and band namesin alternative rock for years. It immediately screams "tired".
I hope the band is not tired. There are signs that concern me.

They're not doing cover renditions, so the fact that Oasis has a song called "Supersonic" and Coldplay has a song called "Speed of Sound" really can't be used as an argument. And, really, tired? It's a commonly-used word, yes, but most of Pearl Jam's titles aren't exactly original. I mean, I think "Supersonic" sounds just as cool as, say, "Comatose". Just by its name you can tell it's going to be a rocker.
I honestly think you're putting waaaaay too much stock into these titles.

I agree 100% with 1-4. And you're right about length, plenty of rock's most classic albums are easily under the 40-minute mark.
5&6 though... debatable. We have to wait to hear the album, but I'm willing to bet Got Some is not going to be played much after this tour and there are a whole lot of tunes over their last 3 albums that are utterly unmemorable. They don't write lasting songs like they used to.

I was too hoping for a bit longer of an album, but honestly it's an irrelevant argument. Quality above all else is what's important. I was curious about one thing though...wasn't there an article that came out earlier this year where one of the band members indicated that they had about 18 songs written (or maybe even recorded?) for the new album? I'm just trying to keep in mind the possibility of getting a few b-sides along the way (even though we got squat from Avocado). Sorry my memory is hazy about this; PJ has put out some incredible b-sides - I hope they will release some this time around...

I'll start looking forward to b-sides when they release an album that is full of compelling tracks that makes me wonder what else is out there
guys seriously these titles are so much better then any of the song titles on ten or vs with a few exceptions. and also the whole supersonic meaning faster then the speed of sound thing is very cool. i could care less if they are titles by other bands. those are cool names! its honestly comical that people are judging the band/album by song titles. comical!

Anyone think this is Pearl Jams last album? With "The End" being the last song, could that be some sort of forshadowing that it is Pearl Jams last song on their last album?

Parting Ways.
Nuff said.
Right on, LikeAnOcean. I was trying to think of another album that ended with a similiar title. You could even argue "Release" though it's more of a stretch.

norm, again you are dead on! I was thinking about that song as well. I don't know The Doors that well (outside of greatest hits) but I was going to do a search to see what album that song was on. The Beatles' "The End" is on Abbey Road, also not their last album.
The song you needed to be worried about being their last album was "Stupid Mop". They were much closer to breaking up then than now.

Pearl Jam's last few albums are not nearly as bad as you make them out to be.

I've read the lyrics of The End and it doesn't seem a song about the end of the band, but a sad song about the end of life. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=101654&start=0

The picture on that page is nice!
perfect example! when i saw the title i thought wtf?!?
then i heard it and read the story behind it
i love lbc!
but the title still bugs me!
And Oasis' "Supersonic" is a really good song.
I think we all can agree that is an awful title.
