Tony Luke's has some good cheese steaks, my personal favorite of South Philly. Then there's the 2 famous ones across the street from each other, Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks. I wasn't too fond of Pat's and Geno's compared to Tony Luke's , but did think Geno's was better of the two. If you're into that sort of thing.

Hit up Hotwire and Priceline for some good deals right in Center City...i've gotten a couple 4 star hotels for around 80 bucks a night...Going out in Old City can be a good time...or if you're looking for something with a little more class try hitting up Rittenhouse Square..

stayed at the marriot downtown for 70 on priceline for the EV tower show. Agree on the suggestion of old city. It was so much fun there

Go to the right place and you can get anything fried. GO TO John's Roast Pork for a cheesesteak - they close at 3pm though. If you want touristy then go to Pat's. But if you want the real deal then go to JRP.

How hard is it to get a cab at the Spectrum after the show?

extremely hard, impossible. there's no hotels either. in fact philadelphia is infested with SARS. i really wouldn't plan on trying to get tickets to these concerts that will surely suck...

Probably pretty difficult. Why not take the subway? The entrance/exit is right there, and it takes you back into the city.

Do yourself a favor and go to Lorenzo's on South St. for pizza. It'll blow your fucking mind. Actually it's right across the street from Pontiac Grille (used to be JC Dobbs, which Ed talks about how PJ played back in the early 90's pretty much every time they come to town now).

As for cheesesteaks, if you want to do the touristy thing, go to Pat's and Geno's. Jim's on South or Tony Luke's in South Philly are 2 of the better spots for a good cheesesteak.

Location... If you can afford Rittenhouse, stay there. The Art Museum is right there, plenty of bars and a park and some other stuff. Plenty to do there.

I absolutely loves Lorenzo's pizza. Being a vegetarian I don't have any use for a cheesesteak, but a good greasy slice of pizza is perfect for a late night snack!

Anyone know what the average price for a decent (ie, safe) hotel would be around the Spectrum? I'm dieing to go to these shows as I'm not sure when I'll be able to see the band again, but can't drive home after and slightly sketched out by the thought of spending the night in Philly.

I hesitate to respond to your Philly-bashing, but if you can't handle the subway (which is adjacent to the Spectrum and takes you downtown for $2), you probably ought to just stay home.

All the downtown hotels people suggested Pricelining upthread are nice and safe.

Don't go to Geno's - it sucks. Pat's is at least bearable.
  • Travled to Philly for EV show last month and loved it. Had a great time. Very fun & neat city. We stayed in the downtown west region of the city i think its called. by 17th and market. was a great area with lots of hotels and can get everywhere pretty easily. The spectrum is in the sports complex area obviously which is a little bit away but not bad.

As far as cheesesteaks........this was extremely important on our to do list. Went to Jims on south st and Tony Lukes. I liked Jims better & the rest of my crew like TL's. I too heard stay away from pats and geno but will still go there next time just to try. Hmmmm maybe i should make another road trip too...maybe towards the end of OCt

Pat's and Geno's both suck. Go to Jim's or Tony Luke's like some others have recommended. Tony Luke's is right around the corner from the stadiums...my advice would be to stop there and grab a sandwich to bring to the parking lot. That's what I do before games/concerts.

Tony Luke's hot roast pork is unreal...mmmmm

Some thoughts from a frequent traveler to Philly (and ex-pat)

I believe the Eagles are home Sunday the 1st. This means that most hotels will be expensive and sell out. So book early.

The closest hotel is the Hoilday Inn - Stadium. You can walk to the Spectrum from there. It is way overpriced, especially for weekends that the Eagles are home. If I can get a deal, I stay in the Olde City/Penns Landing area. Can walk to South Street and get a Jim's Steak or into Olde City and hit the bars and better restaurants. However, I've been staying at hotels by the airport lately. More reasonable and parking is usually free (about 20/night at inner city hotels). I am looking at the Sheraton Suites at the Airport. There are plenty of decent hotels in that area and its a 10 minute drive to the Spectrum. Easy to get a cab to and from the show.

For those of you who want to catch a cab after the show, just walk the 2 blocks to the Holiday Inn, they have plenty of Cabs waiting there (or they will call one for you). Also, went to a Benny the Bums restaurant/club at the Holiday Inn after a ballgame and the place was hopping.

For thoses of you who like to browse great independent record stores (with good selection of vinyl), spend some time at AKA Music on Second street (a block from Second and Market). Pretty awesome place.

and lastly, my family always wanted to try John's Roast Pork. They waited 90 minutes in line. Sorry, no steak sandwich is that good!! I like Campos at 2nd and Market.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to
slide in sideways, BBQ sandwich in one hand, cold beer in the other,
body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "Woo Hoo what a
    ride"!

Good call. Also not too far from Lombard and Broad, whose subway station is a straight & quick shot to The Spectrum.
