wow that sucks man! hell even as a native NY'er it took me yrs to figure my ways in and out of there.
yea as far as the ITW thing...I have a lil bit more of an attachment to my family than that..it prolly was moreso my uncomfortable situation in miami Id say
Yeah I know what you mean about uncomfortable situation, we've all been there wanting to be elsewhere.
well anyways, thank you(+ Allie) again for some of the NYC info. I'll probably end up staying in Flushing. I'll try another agency site instead of priceline to if there's better offers.

I repeat DO NOT bring your car into Manhattan. You would be much better off parking it somewhere far-ish in PA or NJ and take the train. Parking here is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive. You can't even imagine.
UNLESS... you use iconparking.com I've gotten a full day's worth of parking for as low as like $13
In secaucus you are going to take the 190 bus to port authority. it will probably be around 5 bucks round trip. it's only about a 15 minute bus ride in depending on the traffic at the lincoln tunnell. this bus will drop you off on 42nd and 8th. when you get out of the bus station head down town. msg will be 8 blocks on the left.
let me know if you have any questions.
if anybody needs some ideas for nyc be more specific. i've probably been to nyc about 100 times and i still see different things everytime i go.
Cool thanks for the info!
Btw....im not looking for any glamour in Secaucus! lol...But based on the hotel prices i was pulling up (including parking my car)...i figure i'm going to be saving at least $200 a day going this route.... x5 days is alot of cash!

I used to stay at this place prior to moving to New York. Their rates were reasonable and the place was great. That was a few years ago so maybe it isn't reasonable anymore and it may be booked. But I'd recommend looking into it.
hell yea..this is awesome, cant wait to see you! and FINALLY burn it DOWN!
Bathy, I was one of the opening chefs back @ BB Kings, when it opened and I go there often for shows, (even got to meet and hang out with the legend himself,) so Im down for anything afterwards
i know, it's been too long! and even at the gorge it didn't feel like enough time....nice to have good stuff on the horizon
i'm lucky i'm going ot jersey this month too, so i can scope out the transport tip in person too!

Heading to the 2 shows up in MSG and need a little info. We have decided to make the trip a 5 day event and are pulling out hair out trying to plan our trip. We want to do some site seeing all over the city and fear that our hotel location will make getting around a pain. First off is where to stay? Some place cheap and easy access to get around to different place but that isn't a dump. So say I find a good hotel in Queens or the Bronx will getting to sites in the city be a pain? Just want to have as little stress as possible while there. Any info will be appreciated! GO PENS!!!!!!!!!

I recently stayed at the Milford Plaza in midtown. It's on 8th ave and somewhere around 44th/45th street. It was in a great location to get around and see stuff, as well I think it's not too far from MSG. It wasn't crazy expensice, it was clean and safe....the rooms were small, but you don't need a big room!!!

dude, I just googled it...hahahahah thats huge crack and drug area..you might be the only white person there. Thats Bushwick...we used to go cop weed from there back in the day. You go to the spots in the basement and you put how much money you wanna spend in the hole where the doorknobs supposed to be and you tell em what you want...you just gotta watch out for the cops constantly.
so if that where you wanna stay...enjoy
I live in the Ridgewood area and it's not as bad as you make it out to be. I drive through/walk in the middle of the night and never have any problems. You actually get into more trouble in the city than out here.
Take a ride through Ridgewood, Greenpoint and Williamsburg, you will be pleastantly surprised. Houses in my area are in the 650,000 to 1 million dollar range and the Brownstones in Williamsburg are going for millions.
Don't know many ghetto peeps that can afford that y0!

All this NY talk is scaring me. Is there a huge difference between driving there and here in Chicago?
NYC is not unlike any major US city as far as driving and traffic go. Be patient, have a good/excellent map and make sure time is on your side. You should have no troubles at all. Parking is expensive.

I'm thinking about booking a room at the Red Carpet Inn, Jersey City (on Tonnele Street). Place has it's own parking. Rooms are about $100 a night, a 5-10 minute drive to PATH.
About a month ago I was asking about NYC lodging, someone brought up the Ramada on Tonnele about a 2 block walk to the PATH, but an extra 50-60 bucks a night and NO parking. Going to 7 shows, looking to save money where I can, so I'm leaning toward the Red Carpet Inn option.
Just wondering how the overall area/motel is. I don't plan on eating off the floor or rolling around naked in the sheets, I don't want to be attacked by roaches though. I'll be going to both MSG shows with a friend, so I'm not worried about being mugged etc. Just curious if there's anything to be worried about??? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I am staying at the Holland Motor Lodge, same price range, with parking (and next to the Holland Tunnel with some 100 uniformed guards, in case you're wondering about the area).

To be honest, the motels on Tonnele Ave. are notorious for drug deals/prostitution. But, hey, maybe you're into that Be careful

That is the Bushwick area but it has changed a ton and still going through some changes. It's a lot better compared to 8 years ago though. It does get a little questionable the deeper you get into the area though but on the outskrits of the area Ridgewood/Bushwick, Bushwick/Greenpoint and Bushwick/Glendale borders it's rather nice.
If you went down there then you know Troutman and Knickerbocker ave when the police had the spot lights on the street and they were parked there all night because it was a high drug area. Back in the day the only way to get down the street was to show ID to proved you lived on the block otherwise you were steered away. If you go down there now, no more police and no more drugs. Not saying that you can't find drugs and there is no crime but this is America you can find that everywhere if you're looking for it.

Also, it has a big concrete barrier between the 2 directions of the road and it looks like turning off can be difficult. When I stay in Jersey City I stay a little further down, like at Candlewood where you can walk to PATH, but it costs a little more, though less than the city.
Whoever said bring a map, NYC driving can be (is) tricky - there's streets where no turns are allowed, and you're going to get honked at if you hesitate for a microsecond. You're not going to have time to peruse a map while driving. I've never used GPS, so I can't comment on using that in the city. If you need to drive in, ditch the car at some parking somewhere and leave it there till you're leaving the city. Take into account the $6-8 (I don't know the exact amount) that you'll pay using a tunnel or bridge. I don't know if any of them are free, but that's about the price for Lincoln and GWB.

Traffic is horrendous on tonelle ave
(personally i'd rather drive in nyc)
a lot of trucks and can be very confusing (speaking as someone who moved here about 2 years ago and used to have drive in that area to get to my office)
i'd go with one of the newport area (jersey city) hotels if you can get a decent rate
you'll be near the water, right at the newport/pavonia path station
very safe and very convenient
We just ended up booking a space for our car at a parking garage downtown. $135 for 6 days. We are driving in on Sunday night so hopefully the traffic will not be too bad. We have our whole week planed out only thing left is to figure out the best means of travel from place to place. We got the New York Pass so things are a bit cheaper. They have a transit and subway schedule/routes so we should be golden. If not oh well, seeing PJ with my lady 2 nights in a row in NY city!! All is well! Thanks for all the feedback. Take care.

Still, doesn't sound like fun driving there. I'm not intimidated in Chicago or San Francisco. Those would be the only two cities I've driven in.
EDIT: I've driven in Seattle, too, but it doesn't really seem like a very big city like SF and Chi.
