it was wonderful and dissapointing for me. i couldn't see Ed from where i was sitting AND i was right underneath the edge of the balcony....when someone spilled their beer. so it starts dripping on me and i couldn't concentrate. i unintentionally bothered some people around me while trying to figure out what to do so i'm sorry about that. i ended up on the balcony where i could finally see and no beer dripping on me. then my friend yells out my name and says - 'Jane Doe loves you!' so i was mortified to say the least. i hoped no one would know who that was, but someone i work with heard it and said - 'i heard you say you love Ed'....no, that wasn't me. i would never do that. so i still have mixed feelings about the whole night, with all the people yelling obnoxious things and my name being used in vain by my friend. i was glad Ed told them to kick that guy out for yelling Freebird hehe
on a happy note - i did not expect Porch and Ed was awesome. except for the beer and the moment of embarassment it was a very good show. i want to go tonight but i know that's very unlikely.

eddie said he's only owned a mondolin for a few years and doesn't claim to really kno what he's doing with it. He said the mandolin probably thinks "man who the hell is this guy thrashing around on me all the time". but ed tells the mandolin, hey just stick with me kid and we'll do great things. Well, the mandolin toughed it out and eventually gets to play at the ryman. He said he could feel the it's exitment as he was playing it.
there was a lot of great banter last night too. ed's mandolin story was funny and very clever.
can you please tell some of his stories... please?
For the mandolin story (and someone add in if I miss anything or correct me if I'm wrong), he said that about 2 years ago he got the mandolin and most people when they get one they just kinda "whack" around on it and then said he looked at it and said "I don't know what to do with you, but let's try it out and see" and they kind of worked together and they became close. He mentioned that earlier in the day he went to (world famous) Gruhn Guitars next door and was looking at some new mandolins and playing around with them, at which point he kind of made a hushing sound and turned around real fast to look at his mandolin sitting behind him and said "I'm sorry! I'm sorry, forgive me" as if he had cheated on it and told us not to mention it again. He then said that he could feel the excitement from his mandolin for getting to play at the Ryman.
He also told a story after a few people shouted out some requests a few songs in that he had the setlist done and wasn't going to change it. He said that he spent about an hour and a half trying to come up with the setlist and something special since he was in the Ryman and decided to write out the setlist in calligraphy. (Who knew Ed could write in calligraphy? I didn't.) But he said that he spent another hour and a half actually writing out the setlist and held it up to the crowd to see and then got up and handed it to a guy sitting in a chair right in front of the stage just so he could verify that it was indeed, written in calligraphy. He then went on to say that one of his friends asked him "what do you do after your performances and after you've been up there screaming and sweating and everything " and Eddie replied "Well, I go back to my hotel room and practice my calligraphy" which got a good laugh from the crowd. His friend then replied "Oh......so that's what you call it" LOL Then Eddie got a weird look on his face (kind of a confused look) and said he replied "What the fuck do you mean 'that's what you call it', I really do go back and do calligraphy" which got a huge roar of laughs.
He also mentioned being in his dressing room before the show and noticing there was a picture of Minnie Pearl and noted "I didn't really know this but.........Minnie was hot! I don't know if that picture was taken when she was really young or I've just been touring too much, but Minnie was hot".
Another story is that he said that Van "the man" Morrison had played there a few years back, but some people were disappointed because he played a lot of stuff that most people don't know. He said "well, that's because he's Van 'the man'. He can do that kind of thing. If he'd have been Van 'the pussy' he probably would've played Brown Eyed Girl. but he didn't cause he's Van 'the man'" . That got a roar of laughter. He then said that he heard that Roy Acuff once said about the Ryman " if you get to play here, play what got you here" so then Ed said that he was playing this next song in Nashville tuning and didn't know how it'd work out, but he was going to try it anyways and broke into Betterman and it was an amazing version.
Eddie was really on last night and I think he was very honored to be there in such hallowed halls. It was truly a memorable night for everyone and I'm just lucky to have been there and been apart of it. I would love if they put a bootleg of that show for sale cause I'd buy 10 copies!!

The only think I can really add to this is that some people mentioned the part where Eddie says, "That's a great song too, but I don't think I'm going to play it."
The song shouted out was Footsteps, which I would die if did play it. I got anticipation goosebumps when he broke out the harmonica last night. I know that hearing Footsteps in the Ryman would be so surreal and awesome! ooh, I get chills just thinking about it.

Footsteps is always amazing. They played it in Mansfield last year. Definitely one of the highlights of the show.

It was an absolutely amazing show. I'm still in awe. There were so many great tunes, and Ed sounded fantastic. Does anyone know if there's gonna be a bootleg release? I really, really hope so! My memory isn't gonna be vivid enough and I don't wanna forget any part of this show!!!

+1.... we can only hope. But I wouldn't hold my breath though... if he didn't last year....why would he this year?
Best I can tell you is to write down everything you remember... now!
I'm just too tired to do it right now... ready to go home and hug my kids! Miss them... then I'll start writing down what I remember and then refer back to this wonderful fanview with some people who have incredible memory of wealthy details!
Thank god for fanviews, eh?

I think everyone hit all the high lights but for me it was when he had us singing "Porch" and he was just sitting there playing the guitar not even singing or needing to sing .and when he gave respect to the Ryman Auditorium & others as well as Johnny Cash and June . total rock out !...
Amazing show.12th row..Thanks 10c. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. We drove from Columbus,Ohio and stayed in the Smoky Mtns for 4 days before the show. I took my 15 year old daughter and it was her 1st concert ever. She isn't much of a PJ fan but she likes a handful of their tunes and she likes "Into the wild" a lot. After the show,as we were walking back to the hotel, she turned to me and said,"Dad....Eddie is really good and he is kinda hot even though he's like 40 something." I got a nice chuckle out of it. I think Eddie has a new fan for life. Highlights for me were "Thumbing My Way" and "Arc" and seeing the huge smile on my daughters face when he broke into "Hide Your Love".... I have been kicking myself in the ass for not trying to score seats for the 2nd night at the Ryman and driving back to C-Bus....so I just got on ticketmaster and thought I would see if by any luck they would have any seats available for the Memphis show, and guess what.....I just got 2 seats in the 19th row, dead center of the theatre in the premium orchestra area. They must have just relased extra seats....WoW.... I love Beale street on a Saturday night and seeing Eddie their will be awesome...

thanks for the info. I'm still sad that I won't get to relive the concert via bootleg, :( but I'll remember it nevertheless. And, yes, thank god for fanviews! And to 10c for getting me amazing seats to an amazing show!

Drove down on my own from Toledo, Ohio that morning. Had a balcony seat waiting at will call. Sat out in front of the Ryman for a while. Met a woman by the name of Karen from that warm sunny state, and shared stories with her the rest of the time. Turns out she wasn't able to get rid of her extra Ten Club ticket, so she gave it to me, so I moved from the balcony down to Row K. I was extremely greatful. So much energy at this venue it's flat out amazing. You get the chills when you walk in. Truely amazing set list, and it was good to share with a new friend. As for that Karen, thanks again, I failed to get any contact info! if you read this PM me, I'll pay you back on a future tour some how... We will use my Ten Club number!!!! Shoot if anyone happens to know her, feel free to give her the heads up to PM me!
Thanks Ed, such a great performance!!!!!

We just got back to Denver from Nashville last night so I had a chance to let it all sink in. I feel like this is going to get long. These two nights were the greatest nights of my life so far. I went to the shows with my mom who has been a fan since 1991 and she loved it too.
We got 10c seats for this show and ended up getting the center section, 5th row (thanks 10c)and for some reason the seats in front of me stayed empty the whole night so it was pretty nice. We stood in line early to get in because I wanted a Nashville baseball shirt but I wanted to see our seats first so I went right in and was the first one in the main floor, everyone else went upstairs to the merch booth. When the guy showed me our seats I ended up finding an EV guitar pick on the floor and I was sooooo excited. The older people that worked at the Ryman were so funny because they said they had never seen anyone look for picks on the floor BEFORE a show and get so excited about it. Then they started talking about how they were surprised the auditorium did not get cleaned very well. I tried to explain to them that Eddie probably threw the pick out during his soundcheck but they did not understand. It was pretty funny.
I then ran to the merch booth, stood in line and got the Nashville shirt. I have never gotten into the poster craze but I did see the hatch show print and thought it was so cool so I picked one up. It wasn’t until later I realized how great it was to even have gotten one and someone explained to me what the Hatch print was and the history. I also got offered $40 for it but declined.
It looks like most of the stories and highlights were already explained so I’ll be brief with the rest of the show. The setlist was amazing. Eddie was in high spirits and the show was perfect for me. My mom got to hear the song she was dying to hear, Trouble.
I didn’t mind the yelling because Ed played off of it and it was funny. (“Eddie what are you drinking?” “Not as much as you!”) Also he said that he would be taking his inspiration from the spirits and history in the Ryman, not two guys that got 2-for-1 happy hour before the show.
The mandolin story after Rise was funny. That mandolin was very excited to be there, it sounded great. He also said he liked that there was a picture in the back of the auditorium of June Carter playing either the mandolin or the uke, I can’t remember.
Sitting up close was awesome because we could see the little funny random things going on like when Ed was looking all around him and motioned to George for a towel. George had to walk all the way out to show Ed that his towel was right next to him the whole time. Also, during the encore George had to refill Ed’s drink. He poured what looked like red Gatorade and mixed it with a little bottle of something clear but I couldn’t tell what it was. It had a black label and could have been vodka or something else, for those wondering what he was drinking.
The duets were right on and Arc of course was so on it was haunting. He was definitely in a zone. One part I’ll always remember was when he was saying bye to the crowd after Arc and waiving, then touched his arms showing us that he had goosebumps. I had goosebumps for the entire show.
It was an amazing experience!
On a side note before this gets way too long, it was great meeting everyone. The past shows my mom and I had gone to in CO, Las Vegas and California, no one has ever really talked to us or been friendly. It might be a southern thing but everyone was SO nice. We waited outside for Eddie after the show but he never came out. Everyone was still having a good time talking and it was great to meet everyone and share stores so thanks to everyone for being so nice and making the trip perfect!!! Sorry for the length.
I'm glad someone brought up the towel story - I felt like I was rambling on way too much and wanted to see other perspectives because I felt like I was seeing too many little details. :P
I found it funny when he looked to the left first, motioning to someone by patting on his face. Seems like maybe he wasn't understood or it wasn't fast enough to get a response. If it was the former, I already understood that he needed a towel and not sure if it was "duh, can't you tell I need a towel?? I'm sweating!" Because I have felt that many time when I think it's so obvious what I need when I'm gesturing something.
But anyway he looked over to the right and George knew what he needed and just what you said... it was funny.
If it were me, I'd be patting the towel on my face and thinking quickly "asshole... wait. am I calling george an asshole or calling myself an asshole? whatever... get back to work"
And i have to agree with you about how friendly people are in Nashville! Even the interpreter went out of her way to give my husband a wine bottle that she got from Italy when she traveled there. It's the southern hospitality.
We were trying hard not to get into the depression mode when we hit Detroit and saw how different the land and people were... but we kept each other in check.
ARC... I know! Beautiful beautiful beautiful!!! ::drools::

Thanks! Yeah I felt like I went on and on a little but you're right there are so many little things to remember.
I was sitting pretty close to you and the interpreter. She was really interesting to watch and I'm glad Ed gave her a pick. That was a cool moment.
Not to make your tour depression worse (I'm going through it now!) and I don't know if anyone told you but Ed mentioned you guys the second night. He said he had hoped you and her were there because he was anxious to see what the next song looked like and went right into Lukin.

on a happy note - i did not expect Porch and Ed was awesome. except for the beer and the moment of embarassment it was a very good show. i want to go tonight but i know that's very unlikely.

I would love if they put a bootleg of that show for sale cause I'd buy 10 copies!!
great stories! thank you!

+1.... we can only hope.
Thank god for fanviews, eh?

thanks for the info. I'm still sad that I won't get to relive the concert via bootleg, :( but I'll remember it nevertheless. And, yes, thank god for fanviews! And to 10c for getting me amazing seats to an amazing show!
Thanks Ed, such a great performance!!!!!

No problem. I had as much fun typing it out and relieving it as I did listening to it. lol
We got 10c seats for this show and ended up getting the center section, 5th row (thanks 10c)and for some reason the seats in front of me stayed empty the whole night so it was pretty nice.
