Wow! What an incredible show! First off, thank you 10C for kickass seats. I had 5th row (almost) center and it was amazing. Betterman? Thumbing My Way? Gone? Believe You Me? Can it can any better? I was blown away by the show tonight and the crowd was really good too. One guy yelled out Freebird and Eddie said " Kick that mother fu*ker out" lol Eddie seemed a little in awe at first to be playing at the Ryman, and if he did, he never really let it bother him too much and he seemed to be in a great mood. One guy yelled out a song request from the balcony before Believe You Me (and I couldn't hear exactly what it was), but Eddie replied "Great song.......I'm not gonna play it, but that's a great song" It's amazing how fast people quiet down when he starts talking. I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store for us. Thank you Eddie for a great evening!

  • Thank you 10c times a million, you gave us the very front row of seats row B, and dead center aisle seats. During Hard Sun, Eddie looked at my girlfriend and me and just smiled and that memory is something me and her will cherish for the rest of our lives.

So I assume he played Poor Girl or possibly Devil Doll? Can anyone confirm what song was played?

Ah, ok. thanks. I couldn't hear what he was saying and I think that was when the usher came over and told the girl in front of us to get down off the pew.
  • the John Doe song that Ed did with the Supersuckers was POOR GIRL. And it was f-ing awesome!!! I've only heard the recorded track and to hear it solo acoustic was a treat!

    poor girl.

Betterman was classic! Unbelievable. He grabbed his "Nashville" guitar at the last second and said Roy Acuff always said to play what got you here ... he started into Betterman. Sounded totally different than what we are used to. Great.

He played Betterman in that style last tour in Chicago. Get you a copy of that one.

GREAT SHOW! I was -- unfortunately -- next to the guy who yelled for "Won't Back Down," and whom Eddie had to subtly reprimand twice for yelling uncontrollably (like when the guy asked Ed what he was drinking, and Eddie replied, "Not as much as you"). That was NOT the fun part of the show. My section seemed to be on time out, because Eddie actually pointed at our section when he made the Chrissie Hynde/"she doesn't suffer fools gladly" comment. But, the setlist was unexpected and a wonderful surprise in many places. And he was really on tonight. "Arc" was just breathtaking, as always.

I hope all the douches went tonight... and won't come back tomorrow.
I'm simply appalled by the idiots who can't understand that yelling out requests to Ed:

    a) isn't going to work
    b) makes you look like an idiot
    c) is annoying as fuck to everyone around you that is focused only on Ed!

Let's all pray that Thursday's audience is more attenuated to the musical receptors at the Ryaman...
learns to shut the fuck up.

I felt bad ... I was sitting right in front of Lilly ... and I'm 6'8. Someone eventually switched seats with her so I didn't feel so bad. Great show.

Night one....good wine (consumed by me after a couple at the flying saucer..)...great setlist...good crowd although you'll always have those morons that shout out some shiz....bunch of songwriters, an nfl player or two in the crowd... tons of musicians all there to see mr. ed ved. the nashville crowd was for the most part, a polite crowd..."brain damage (pink floyd)" into "sometimes" got the crowd eager...."thumbing my way" is one of my all time favorite tunes, so to hear that was awesome especially followed by "gone"...anything off of "into the wild" is a great song so those were great to hear live. "You're True" was one that had a couple around me asking me what the heck it was, but I had it downloaded somewhere down the line...good song..."Drifting" is one of my all time favorite b-sides, up there with "Strangest Tribe"...cool to hear "Drifting" live....(PJ 's B-sides are better than 95 percent of any band's material of course!) The "betterman" version will have hard core fans wanting a bootleg. Pretty cool-different version however it is not a version that leads to a good "singalong", which is fine by me either way. Small Town and Porch let you know that Ed is like a great MLB pitcher...he can go 8 strong...time for the 9th!!! Golden State, a short first verse version of "Believe You Me", F that..go to "Wishlist" was top shelf.

All...it was "Arc" that closed the door and blew the top off of the Ryman!!!! I've never heard anything in my life sound finer! (Although interestingly, the Flight of the Conchords version of "Angels" was pretty good a couple months back...Still, Arc was the cat's meow.) I've heard a bootleg from S.D. a few years back but this took the cake! "Hard Sun" was a reliever that took care of the game!

Good freakin' times! Great job Ed!!! Well worth the ticket! Hadn't seen PJ or Ed since Tampa almost exactly a year back when my wife and I scored front row tix through TC.

I'm going to tell my wife that the show sucked so that she won't be mad at me...I'll bring her tomorrow.

    Cheers!

  • Awesome show, was 8th row with my 10c tickets and met a lot of cool people. Look forward to tomorrow night as well.

    Couple notes:
Poor Girl he had the lyrics on a piece of cardboard.
First request yelled he went on about how did the set list in calligraphy so there was no chance of him not following it. Though personally they yelling was not a lot at all.
Whoever was the girl posing as the Lily he signed for, thanks for standing on the pew so much!!
    Betterman was awesome
Ed seemed to be in the best spirits
Guards were being hard on cell phone usage, even told me to put mine away and I never had it out!

Was an awesome show hope tomorrow is just as memorable.

    a-m-a-z--i-n-g.....

Got row 8, right of stage from 10c. The view was spectacular. Eddie was in such a great mood all night. He was truly in "awe"and totally humbled by the experience of playing there. I really got the feeling that it was just as much of a treat for him to play there as it was for us to see him there.

He walks out and everyone is cheering! He does a quick wave, collects himself, and sits. He nods his head and everyone sits in unison it seemed. He stated that "I hope you don't mind, but I've never been here before and I'm going to make myself comfortable. I hope you all can do the same."

Later on in the evening he mentioned that he had been in the music business for quite a long time and there wasn't much he had not done, but this was a first for him.

You could tell from the first verse of Walking the Cow that his vocals were DEAD ON. His deep voice echoed through the historic hall like so many before him.

It is amazing how appreciative of his fans he is. He went on and on about the little girl, Lily, that he had previously met, mention that he signed her autograph book right behind Mickey Mouse.

He commented at one point that he wanted to "hear the whispers of the great ones featured on the walls and not the screaming of a banshee." "It's too early to get loud." there will be time for that later."

My honest to God favorite moment of the night was when the redneck in the balcony yelled, "Freebird!" and Ed continued to chastise him, saying something to the effect of, "Get out of here! I am serious! Get that fucking guy out of here! That joke is so old people have been using it before I was born, which is before the song was recorded!" I laughed for a good ten minutes, and also stood up to cheer! Bravo!

Ed was so funny tonight! He told the story of how two years ago he picked up a mandolin and spoke to it and told it, "I don't know what to do with you really, but stick with me and I'll talk you places. And here he is playing at the Ryman!" He joked, turning his head back as if looking at it behind him, that he had been at the guitar shop next door the day before possibly looking for it's replacement.

He also said, "Years ago Van "the Man" Morrison played a show here and people were upset because he didn't play everyone's favorite song. Well, He's Van "The Man" he can play what he wants, if he was Van "The Pussy" we would have played Brown-eyed Girl, but he's not. He's "The Man." Then he mentioned that Roy Acuff always told anyone who played the Ryman to "play the song that got you here." This lead to the reworked "Betterman." Awesome. Great energy, great singalong.

I have always loved Porch. Always. Tonight was better than ever, and I did NOT expect it to be. I thought acoustically it would lose its power, its feeling. Oh no! Baddass....almost shed a tear I was so happy! :D

It isn't Eddie unless he makes a mistake...he attempted Believe You Me, forgot the words, and went right into Wishlist without skipping a beat! Great recovery!

Highlight of the night: ARC! I heard Arc in 2003 at Little Rock. It was powerful. It was tragic. It was beautiful then.....tonight.....it came to life. Before playing it he said something eluding to the Rockslide victims, can't remember exactly, and he mentioned being in a state of mind of church. (Oddly enough he made a previous mention of God earlier in the night.) If anyone has a less fuzzy memory help me out on this.

His vocals were bouncing off the walls, tearing through the pews. This song was made to be preformed at this venue. Just magnificent.

I have so much more to share, so many more memories, but I have RAMBLED long enough. Thanks for reading. I hope you've enjoyed my take on it 1/1,000,000th as I enjoyed experiencing it! See you tomorrow night!

I'll try and work up a more proper review later, but wow.

If anyone got an extra Hatch Show print they'd be willing to sell/trade me PM me. I'm going again tonight and I'm going to try and grab one, but I have to work...so I'm sure they'll be sold out again.

For those interested in the Betterman tuning, I think this is what he did. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nashville_tuning I'm not a guitar guy at all, but my friend who went with me told me that this is what he had done. She also said it's really hard to play. I must say that it was simply the most beautiful version of Betterman that I've ever heard and I really hope that we can buy a version someday.

Great show! Thanks 10C for the great seats - 14th row just off center. At one point, Eddie mention there was a picture of Minnie Pearl handing in his small dressing room. He joked that in the picture Minnie was really hot, which meant one of two things - the picture was taken before he remembers her (think granny-age - as no slight on her looks) or he has been on tour too long. One other funny moment was when playing Society with Jerry both started into a solo (at the same time). Before the show they thought they'd worked it out and were caught off guard without someone playing rhythm. Eddie started the song by telling Jerry it's your song so you sing it, which he launched the first verse. They paused & relaunched recovering beautifully to finish the song barely missing a beat. As previously mentioned, the Ryman seemed to embrace Arc, which stood out as a somber and haunting song special to the moment closing out the 1st encore. Hard Sun was a great close and it was obvious Liam, EJ, and Eddie were enjoying themselves. My wishlist includes tickets for tonight's show, but looks like that's out for me as my fund-age is low. DP

I just read everyone's comments here - revisiting last night!:mrgreen:

I may write a long review, but it may not be interesting or applicable to a lot of people....but fuck, that totally blew my ass away big time!

I went in with low expectations considering my unique situation with ADA seats but good god, I never thought I'd see the day where everybody were working together sooooooooo well and beautifully to make the best out of the situation, including my best friend and love, Bobby - who was very patient and understanding from the beginning to the end and.... I'm truly lucky to have him.

Really. There was one period of time when he was having one of those unsure moments. I said... honey.... listen. I am a very, very complicated person and if you cannot handle me.... nobody else can. He finally realized that and appreciated that. ;)

Anyway... damn. I'm just beyond disbelief how incredible the show was - from Liam, EJ, John Hannan, and EV himself...and the interpreter who contributed to the quality of the show. Natalie was on the last list on interviewing interpreters and it was really challenging finding the right interpreter to work with for the last month. She accepted the job last Saturday and in the last four days, she really worked her ass off - she was determined and dedicated to the job - Bobby and I spent so many hours working with her, even up to the day of the show at lunch time!

I am so proud of her and she really made a big difference! Not only that, but she also advocated on my behalf and I just love her for that!!!

I was thrilled that EV wanted to show her his appreciation when he sneak up behind Natalie and gave her a nod with a genuine smile. Natalie was caught off the guard cuz she didn't expect him and she was like a little giddy girl. She so totally deserved the acknowledgment from Ed! She also personally received a pick from EV himself the second time he came back - during Hard Sun.:mrgreen: I am going to personally send her my black EV pick. That's how I feel about her. :)

I was very very very spoiled last night - we were one of the people receiving upgrades to front row! Honestly.... I was uncomfortable when I was offered that. I was like uhh uhhh uhhh I don't know... I didn't feel comfortable being sooo close to EV and being obvious to people. EV's management was like oh don't worry about it! It'll be FABULOUS!!!

    It was....and beyond that! :)

I thought Arc was absolutely absolutely absolutely beautifulllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing I have to complain here at all! Well wait.... I couldn't help but wonder why EV didn't play my favorite song - I am Mine? Huh... he played that at every solo show, didn't he?? I wanted to hear and see that on his guitar! The interpreter and I worked so hard on that one too.... hahaha. Oh well. I'm trying not to take it personal... it kinda feel like it was taken out on purpose. :P ;)

Like I said, we got so spoiled last night with everything.... and I felt bad for Bobby. He was part of the whole thing... so I was so willing to wait around the tour bus so he'd ask Ed something. It was something he had been thinking about a long time.... but EV never came out of his tour bus.

But Bobby was really fine with that. He really had a great time last night!

Now we have to deal with the heat driving back to Michigan.... ugh. Our car has no AC. :(

    Thanks so much, EV! :)

    Thanks, Liam and EJ! :)

    Thanks, John! :)

Thanks, Ryman people and EV's people including 10c and management! :)

Thanks, Natalie! You fucking rock!

Last but not least... thanks honey!!!!! *kisses*

Have a wonderful time tonight at the 2nd show!
JA: Why do I get the Ticketmaster question?
    EV: It's your band.

I thought the crowd was actually pretty good. I didn't hear a peep during ARC and was very impressed! Also, a lot of the yells and request come from the 10club. You cant really blame the city for having bad fans.. Night 2 is going to be even better.. How?? Who knows

Anyone meet Ed after the show? I saw tons of people lined up and definitely not worth it

Man, this sounds like a great show. I can't believe I passed on Wed and opted to just go tonight. Oh well, if I've learned one thing with Eddie is that you can never assume he can't one up the prior night. But I did tell my wife yesterday that I would be gutted if he played a country version of Betterman...man, I must have ESPN :-)

Then to top it off you guys got tunes like "Let My Love Open The Door", "Driftin" among other real killer treats. Hope we don't get many yelling guys tonight filling the air with song requests. Trust in Ed and he will deliver. But this is a tough gig to top.

Great to hear about fans getting great seats. Good for you guys. Hope for the same tonight but we'll just have to wait and see. Look forward to seeing everyone there...safe travels. Peace!
