i agree with this. That was my major problem with Backspacer, beyond the outdated and outmoded marketing strategy which did nothing to help them sell records, the music didnt seem to excite people all that much. that said, PJ have never really been about experimenting and pushing musical boundaries. And thats certainly fine, Radiohead is Radiohead, precisely because there is only one band like that. To do that album after album is something few bands ever attempt or pull off. Ed and the guys seem happy, in committed relationships, have children, and have settled into the "elder statesmen of rock" mantle. And all thats great. But No Code came out precisely because of the situation Ed was in. It was a stunning album and stunning move, but I think it was clearly more about sabotaging their career and trying to lose fans as opposed to trying to break down musical barriers and try out new sounds.
All those bands the OP mentioned to me are the vanguard of rock and music right now.
I also think it may have to do with peoples changing musical attitudes. as much as its great seeing all the 90's revival bands reforming, its never going to replicate what it felt like in the early 90's. that was such a great time. Lets face it seeing Soundgarden in 2012 just isnt the same as seeing them in 1992. it just isnt. And seeing AIC now isnt the same as seeing them in 1993.
Despite PJ bringing lots of newer bands on tour, more indie minded, I see Ed and the guys not really integrating that music into their own stuff. The guys like AF, but i dont see that influence in the music. Same with Radiohead and PJ.
I think its just expanding of musical tastes and palates and wanting PJ to sound like that. Back in the 90's PJ were new and hip and everyone wanted to sound like them. Now other bands are at the forefront of the musical landscape and are influencing other bands like PJ did.
I'd love to see PJ experiment on this next album too, stretch themselves, and I think they will to a degree, but it definitely won't be anything like Radiohead with there current electronic sound, you just know PJ won't go down that road. At the end of the day PJ are a mostly guitar, bass and drum attack, thats what they know, that's their sound and that's what they will stick too.
I read somewhere recently, in a Rollingstone interview I think, that it will be a natural progression of their sound and everyone in the band brings what they do naturally to the music and it just organically becomes the new PJ record. Ok, it will probably differ from Backspacer, quite radically in that it will be a departure from the sound of that record, but the next one will no doubt have the standard punk/fast-rocking tunes, mid-tempo songs and a ballad or 3, that's what they do and that's what they've done on every album so far, so I can't see them changing that formula.
I don't know who's producing the album, probably Brendan O'Brian, but I'd like to see the new sound come from a new producer that hasn't worked with them before, Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck, Pavement), Danger Mouse (The Black Keys) or Flood (U2, Depeche Mode), someone that can push the band in a new direction. These guys know how to make a record sound special, of course it will still sound like PJ, but it would have a new influence from someone putting their mark on an already great PJ sound. I'd also like the band to go a bit darker on this next record, Backspacer was just too upbeat for my taste.
Whatever they do though I'm sure it will be awesome, it's Pearl Jam after all!

I completely agree with every single thing you just said. I guess your last 2 paragraphs is what I meant in my original post. Radiohead, Arcade Fire, etc were just examples of bands that branch out. I did not mean I wanted pj to start doing electronica. I certainly love and want the natural pj progression of a new album, just like you said, with a totally different direction and experimenting... Some more out-there sounding songs and stuff

Brendan O Brien and Seattle seems to be the comfort zone with PJ. I would love them to come and record in Europe with someone completely new just to see what they would do. REM sounded hugely energized on Collapse Into Now when they relocated to Berlin. Adam Kasper gave the band an amazing sound on Riot Act and although Tchad Blake had a few hitches with Binaural his recording techniques were new and fresh.

Bottom line is that the next record needs to be something completely different than Backspacer. It's definitely the weakest of the catalog, hands down. I think it was too forced, too rushed, and just didn't capture that PJ sound they are capable of. Not saying it was an absolutely horrible album, but it just doesn't do it for me. I think Avacado isn't too from it too. Some others may think different.
I know the guys are proud of their work and creating new music, but I get a feeling that they know they could do better and want to create something that is totally different than the sound and concept of Backspacer, and different than what they've recorded before. I think they're putting more thought into this next one and taking the time necessary to not rush things and create something different (obviously with the time that has elapsed since BS). If that, and the time off separated with side projects/solo work, creates a beautiful fusion of creativity and a different sound for this next album to make a masterpiece - then I'm all for it. After all, Jeff said in PJ20 that they always wanted to be a chameleon type of band - like a Zeppelin or Pink Floyd.

Funny, because I think they upped their songwriting on Backspacer - I thought Avocado was rushed sounding, and tried too hard at times, stuff like Comatose, Come Back & Life Wasted left me cold, but I enjoyed Got Some & The Fixer - I think since Yield none of their albums have been perfect, like that Ten - Yield run.
