LUSAKA (AFP) - Poachers have shot the last two white rhinos in Zambia, killing one and wounding the other, in a night operation at the Mosi-Oa-Tunya national park in Livingstone, an official said Tuesday.

The shooting of the two endangered animals in a heavily-guarded zoological park near Victoria Falls in Zambia's tourist resort town of Livingstone took place last week.

"I can confirm that one of the white rhinos was shot dead by suspected poachers. The other one was wounded and is undergoing treatment," said Maureen Mwape, spokesperson of the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA), which would be investigating the shooting.

The dead female rhino's horn was apparently removed.

Zambia's white rhinos were all killed by poachers but the government managed to acquire six from South Africa in 1993, of which the injured male is the last to survive.

that is terrible... I remember seeing a special about the white rhino like 15 years ago, and I have had a soft spot for them ever since.

I struggle to find a just punishment for these poachers. I mean, I don't believe in the death penalty. But in my mind, this is a bigger crime than murdering a human. Maybe feed them to the lions. That'll teach 'em to fuck with wildlife.

Free market philosophy is against regulation...you know...the stuff that protects these animals.

Actually, it's not ivory.....it's actually similar chemically to either our hair or fingernails. Many Chinese believe that rhino horn crushed to a powder and ingested is male potency cure. It was hoped that the world-wide marketing of Viagra would kill the market for exotic animal parts (tigers are killed so that their penises can be made into a soup that supposed to cure a limp noodle) as potency drugs. The Arabs (and other peoples living on the Arabian Peninsula) desire the horn for use in making traditional-style knives that serve as tokens of their man-hood.

I will be a sad day when we lose all of our mega-fauna. :(

    They go hand in hand.
no no no I disagree. free markets might support deregulation, but they do not support breaking laws. (such as murder, stealing, etc)

They don't want the laws/regulations there to begin with.

I've always wondered what bar-b-que rhino tastes like... probably gives you a hard-on for a week.

If only the China-man penis was larger...the rhino would live...

    Tastes like chicken.
    ...
Which is always the stupidest response. If rare Siberian Albino Tiger "Tastes like chicken"... then, EAT The GODDAMN CHICKEN!!! There are a gazillion chickens running around... eat them if you want something that tastes like them and leave the damn Tigers and Rhinos alone.
    ...
and the damn Chinese... fucking guys are always the ones eating Rhino Horn or Tiger Balls for 'Sexual Prowess'. There are already enough of the damn Chinese running around... they need to eat more pussy and less Rhino horns and Tiger dicks.
