Eddie Vedder: Acoustics in Holiday Inn bathrooms are incredible

Pearl Jam rocker Eddie Vedder thanked Universal Music’s Michele Anthony for helping him through a “rough patch” that led to one of his biggest hits, when he presented Anthony with the UJA-Federation of New York’s Music Visionary of the Year honor.
Referring to Anthony as “the woman in black” for her signature monochromatic look, Vedder quipped, “You’re more likely to find Johnny Cash in floral before Michele.”
A guest told us: “He also recounted a personal ‘rough patch’ that Michele helped him through on the road at a Holiday Inn in Amherst [,Mass.]” — during which he and guitarist Stone Gossard holed up in the motel’s bathroom to write their hit “Daughter.”
“Eddie said, ‘One thing about a Holiday Inn — the acoustics in the bathroom are incredible. The thick towels at fancy hotels are not good for sound.’”
The charity event at the Pierre brought in a record $1.8 million. Sharon Osbourne hosted for a power crowd including industry honchos Rob Stringer, Jason Flom, Allen Grubman, Irving Azoff, Daniel Glass, Ron Delsener, Jane Rosenthal and Lyor Cohen.
Said one music vet: “725 of NYC’s loudest were riveted by the toasts, the speeches and the honoree. It was mind-blowing . . . standing ovations at a luncheon. Two for [presenter] Gloria Steinem, two for Michele, one for Eddie.”
