Help with hotel location for Global Citizen

SteffyLouSteffyLou Posts: 369
Hi Everyone,

I've never been to NYC and am in sticker shock for hotel rooms. When searching for hotels, what location should I be looking for on websites (choices like Times Square, Midtown West, Midtown East, Chelsea, etc)? We are planning on walking to the fest.

Thanks for your help!

Hotel Edison (Times Square) and Park Savoy (Central Park South) are two budget hotels within walking distance. Read reviews, though.

I just spent 4 days in New York for my first time there last week. I would suggest the New York Manhattan Hotel. It's cheaper than most Manhattan hotels and it's clean, safe, great location, etc.

It's a few blocks from the Empire State Building and about a 10 minute walk to either MSG or Times Square. Plus the Subway system (which is awesome and you need to use to get around to most places) has a stop a few blocks away. You'd be able to take the subway right up to Central Park from there.

I stayed there based on a recommendation from a friend who is from New York and he always stays there.

The New Yorker has tiny rooms (it's almost funny), but they renovated somewhat about 8 years ago so it's not a total dump (it's an historical hotel, so old), and the location is great. RIght across from MSG (maybe there is something else cool happening there while you're in town!), and a few blocks from Times Square.

Walking to the festival means you're going to have to spend a lot for the room. It's in the middle of central park (you can google Great Lawn) so you're looking at 70-90ths streets on either the East or West side (assuming you are a walker) It's going to be very expensive. Like others have suggested staying closer to MSG or Times Square would probably be cheaper but it'll be a good 40 blocks to the festival. On the other hand if you're going to do other touristy stuff then you'd be better off staying there.

If you really want to save a few bucks, Empty doesn't have the wrong idea. Though personally I'd suggest you have a look at one of the 5,000 hotels they've just put up in Long Island City (might be called LIC or Astoria) in Queens. Depending on the location you'd be near the N, R or 7 train which are all simple transfers to the 4,5,6 to get you to the park, and which all go to Times Square for tourist stuff. You could also check Brooklyn but LIC is closer to the UES. The subway fare is $2.75 each way, no matter where you go. Buy your metrocard at the airport. Problem Solved.

Thank you all for the advice!

Coming from the midwest suburbs I am not used to such varying hotel price ranges. Honestly, it seems like $300 is the cheapest (pre-tax, holy cow taxes!)

I know trains are probably simple, but it is overwhelming when you aren't used to them. That is why we were looking closer to the actual park.

Yeah, i second that. IF you can afford to swing for the extra bucks, do it. Because it's fucking awesome to have your hotel room right in the action, concert location aside. There is a lot more to New York than that. If you're making that trip you may as well do it right, and not stay in Jersey. ;)

I just booked a room at the Fairfield Marriott on 40th in Long Island City. @ 2.6 miles from Central Park, I'm hoping it's not too expensive of a cab ride or uber. (the room was $299 pre tax - I have a new car, off street parking was a big deal for me)

Can anyone recommend any good restaurants in that area of LIC where we can get a mid-afternoon dinner before heading to the show?

Cab will be about $15-20 depending on traffic to the east side entrance. But you're also only a few blocks from 39th ave on the N/Q or queens plaza on the R/M/E/F. So. You have options.

Looking at staying in Jersey which is quite affordable. Is it reasonable to get a train back after the show?

$300/night on a weekend in September is probably average/on the low-end of average for a non-sucky Manhattan hotel. On the weekends, hotels in Midtown/Financial District will probably be cheaper. Midtown is boring but convenient (Times Sq is Midtown West, Grand Central is Midtown East). Financial District (where One World Trade is) is probably more interesting but further away.

Trains can be bad but I disagree with trying to stay within walking distance just because of it. GoogleMaps and mta.info are your friends! GoogleMaps shows subway routes for NYC, just double check mta.info for service disruptions to be sure.

I'd suggest staying somewhere in the five boroughs as opposed to Jersey if you're going to be spending most of your time in NYC. At least you're on the subway lines. Jersey is convenient if you are near the PATH but after around midnight or so, the schedule gets spotty and it may take you a really long time to get back to your hotel.

Yes it was sorry I didnt quote. I think a couple days before the show I'll start a thread just for subway directions

I can't help you with specific restaurants in that area but you can GrubHub or Seamless to your hotel too. Though there's no shortages of places to eat within walking distance.

While not a hotel question per se, I'm trying to figure out my best parking options near Central Park and was curious in which area within Central Park will the concert take place? Closer to the Southern edge of the park or closer to the Northern edge? Might be easier to locate a hotel within walking distance and park there for the day.

I'm not bragging or anything but I must say I'm extremely lucky...
My boss is extremely successful person. His small business is now the global leader in LIMS software. He has homes all over the world including a condo in Manhattan which he lets us use multiple times a year...all for free. Reading stuff like this reminds me how lucky I am to be connected to such an awesome person. Unfortunately I can't make it to GCF this year due to a wedding...but I'll be up there Sept. 19 - 22nd if any fellow jammers are in town!

The concert is gonna be on the great lawn. There's two entrances, one on the east side at 72nd st and one on the west side at 72nd street.

Terrific. Thank you. Makes it much easier knowing this in terms of locating a suitable parking spot for an easy exit afterwards.

    Yes, that would be crazy.
You guys could rent an apartment for the weekend which would be cheaper than a hotel. Anywhere on the Upper East or West side and you're walking to the Park.

Agreed, if you have never been to NYC please dont stay in Jersey, experience the city. Check rates on Airbnb, or try to use travel points that you may have. If you have never used Airbnb before ask a friend to send you a referral and you'll save some cash on the first stay. There are lots of options in NYC.
