Check with NJ Transit if you are heading to the City early. The Pope is going to be in town. Visiting between NY and Philadelphia. He will be in Philly the weekend of the concert, however there are special train schedules in and out of the city from Sept 23-27.

OMG he's here that weekend? It's going to be a total clusterf**k. Not just because of the pope. The POTUS is coming as he's leaving, not to mention all the world leaders here for the UN General Assembly. Yikes!

Is a subway ride from LGA to the park a reasonable trek?

    No subway to LGA.
you've got two options. take the Q33 bus (which has been renamed and im very sorry but I dont know what its called now) to 74th Street and take the subway from there. You can take any of the trains from there and transfer to the 6 to get to central park. The other option is the m60 bus from LGA into upper Manhattan. Get off at 125 and take the six straight down. It sounds simple and it is, but that bus gets caught in traffic.

If you are determined to stay near LGA you can check with your hotel if they have a shuttle bus to the train.

Have you guys checked hotel prices in Long Island City, Sunnyside, Astoria?

If you reeaallly wanted to, you could take the NYC Airporter bus downtown. $14 one way from LGA (stops at all terminals) to Grand Central, Bryant Park, Penn Station. Then take the subway from there. I wouldn't really advise it though. But an option if you were set on staying near the airport.

I remember when the Strokes played a show here while the Queen and Prince Philip were in town and staying at the hotel across the street from the venue. At some point between songs Julian said something like "we'll kill her..." and I remember Albert just instantly looked mortified and shook his hands as if to say "no, no, he's kidding." It was pretty funny actually.

I wouldn't recommend it either. NYC airports are shitholes and I'd imagine airport hotels are not much better. You don't come to NYC to stay by the airport, you will not be experiencing the city.

However, if the only reason you are coming is for the concert and just need a cheap option for shelter then I guess look for the cheapest option. I just don't think it's a good idea.

UN general assembly is probably the biggest reason hotels are expensive. Their delegations are huge. 180+ countries and their delegates and all the security detail? Yikes.

Exactly this! Also important to note that particular shuttle stops running after 11:30 PM, so it could be a good option getting to the city, but if you wanted to stay late, you'd need to look into other options coming back to your hotel, such as the bus.

You could also find an Airbnb in Brooklyn and take the subway over to Manhattan. There's still quite a few. My daughter lives in Brooklyn in Bed-Stuy and I usually stay with her when I head downstate, but there's quite a few Airbnb places priced reasonably that aren't far from subway stops. I guess it depends on what else you want to do while you're in town, but whatever you do you'll need to always allow way more time than you think to get places.

Steffylou, if you stayed near JFK you could then take the airtrain from the airport into manhattan - most hotels around there have a shuttle that will take you to the airport. It won't cost near as much as a cab, and you'll avoid traffic. Traffic around JFK, whether you're driving or in a cab can be absolutely horrific at certain times of day.

@Suziemay I should have clarified: I'm not staying at a hotel near LGA. I'd be flying in the morning of the show and flying out the morning after without a hotel. I was asking if the shuttle service to and from LGA was feasible in terms of cost and traffic, and whether it even operates late at night after the show ends.

Ah! Then definitely a good option. Can take as little as 20 minutes to get back, IF you are traveling during non-rush hour times with good luck. Otherwise, it's a whole different story. As said before, the last shuttle is at 11:30 PM. And another thing to note that drop off and pick up in the city (at least for the Grand Central stop) are a bit different, consult the website. From years past, I believe the show has ended around 9 or 10 PM.

    Gotcha. Wow!:

I've actually started really liking taking public transport to LGA when I am traveling light. So, the Q70 Limited bus to Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street subway station, then transfer to the E, F, M, R and 7 trains. For Central Park, I think easiest would be to take the E to 50th street then transfer to the C and take that to 72nd St. That will take you to the West side entrance. It will probably take about an hour, give or take a few mins.

If you don't want to deal with the subway, then the airport shuttle should be OK but I've never taken it. The bus to subway option is only $2.75, and I haven't taken a taxi there in awhile, but I think it's probably around $30?

Just to add, traffic is probably going to be challenging that weekend given all the other stuff going on in the city, so probably add on another 30 mins-1 hour cushion to be safe.

so sounds like you guys know the deal so I will ask... what's the best/easiest way to get from Grand Central to Central Park?

I think the entrance is on 72nd St, either East or West. I'm still unclear if we can use either or will depend on the ticket.

For East entrance, you can take the 6 train from Grand Central to 68th street then walk to 72nd street. Or you could just walk if it's a nice day, ~30-40 mins walk.

For West entrance, take the 7 train from Grand Central to Time Square, then switch to the B train and take that to 72nd street.

You could also look up GoogleMaps; it maps out NYC transit. Just also check mta.info for delays/reroutes.

@Suziemay I should have clarified: I'm not staying at a hotel near LGA. I'd be flying in the morning of the show and flying out the morning after without a hotel. I was asking if the shuttle service to and from LGA was feasible in terms of cost and traffic, and whether it even operates late at night after the show ends.

i like the dedication... feel free to come put your feet up and get comfortable at the Hilton Central Park if you need a break. tasty recreational herbs will be burning...
