As a book lover, I may or may not have spent upwards of $74.99 on a book before, and while the fabric slip-case and signed McCready print is enticing, I just can't pull the trigger. Plus I preordered my own copy on Amazon months ago. Looks like it will be a cool read though.

He might be overrated but I wouldn't say terrible. Of the two albums I know of him, I'd say there are a few bright spots and several duds. But those bright spots tend to be really bright. I wouldn't pay to see him live, but he's got lots of forgettable stuff, mixed with a few great moments. "Holocene" and "Calgary" off the last album are incredible.

I'm from EC, where you're automatically supposed to like everything Justin Vernon. Agree that there's bright spots and duds, completely. A lot of songs are 'take it or leave it'. I'd honestly say the majority of it does not warrant a repeat listen, but the highs are so high. Listen to the song 'Blood Bank' in the dead of winter, and tell me it's not incredible. No vocoder, falsetto, no extra stuff, just a bare-bones beautiful song.

Exactly. The songs that are good are powerful. Hard not to hear windswept Wisconsin fields in his music. The rest of it? Meh.

Minneapolis area friends! What's this Northern Invasion Festival like? Worth a trip from Manitoba for the Soundgarden show? Casual 90's Bush fan as well so the Saturday lineup looks OK for me.

Don't really do the Metal etc... which seems to be a focus of the deeper part of the lineup and past events.

    Crowd quality, venue etc... opinions?

    Thanks!

Never been to the Northern Invasion Festival, but I've went to several festivals there a LONG time ago, back when it was 93.7 EDGE Fest, and then 93.7 X Fest. I've seen Beck, Iggy Pop, Matchbox 20 (haha), Deftones, Lamb of God, Hatebreed, Sevendust, Staind...you name it. It's a weird little bowl with a concrete floor now (I believe).

I'm sure the crowds are awful there now (they usually were), but I would say this: I don't recall the festival experience there as bad enough that it would prevent me from seeing a band I love. If you love Soundgarden, go for it. It's only a 45-60 minute drive from the Twin Cities. Fly into MSP, take 494 to 94, exit at Hudson, take it north (13 is it?) to Somerset. You're there.

I live in Hudson, been to the venue a few times for other festivals but never for northern invasion. It's nothing special, but it has a pretty large main stage/amphitheater part with a flat concrete pad in a big grassy bowl area. I imagine the crowd will be pretty "metal" and full of Wisconsin rednecks but for Soundgarden it might be worth it..

Scrolling up, we'll also be at Northern Invasion. Govx tickets were only $40 or so.

I haven't been there since Ozzfest 2000 I think. I remember lots of mud in the pit. But I'm old now so hopefully they still have the lawn to sit on?

I was over there a couple of years ago for the Avett Brothers. It's much nicer than it was back in the mid - late 90s. It's more of an amphitheater/bowl now. Concrete surface in front of the stage/"main floor" area with lots of sloped lawn on the edges. We brought a blanket and kicked back.

I'm not saying it isn't true, but neither Chelios nor Alternative Nation would be my first choices for PJ news. Again, it could turn out to be correct, but it seems like a strange thing for a band to announce formally (you're a band, not a professor going on sabbatical) and even stranger is the fact the supposed announcement was through a guy not even connected to the band, save for a friendship with some of them.

I think its likely they don't tour much this year, but I highly doubt it has anything to do with this. Just too weird.
