Biggest pleasant surprise at Lolla?

I had not really heard of the Black Keys before I went to Lolla and my god was I blown away, absolutely fantastic set with a phenomenal energy to it. I was also surprised by G. Love, he really isn't my sort of deal but my friends were excited for him and he put on a rather good show

I like Muse but, everything was so rigid, but I think you get that with all the graphics they had set to each song. The long breaks between songs was killing me.

Silverchair was actually very good, I went there with low expectations of them and came out impressed with their set.

don't get me wrong, muse was good live, they just didn't meet my expectations. the light show they had going on was a nice complement, but don't expect much else. there is no spontaneity. the singer has no personality... he never said a word, it was the drummer who thanked the crowd maybe twice during the set and there was nothing else spoken. the songs were good, but were identical note for note to the album. it was just kinda underwhelming. i was hoping they'd rock it out or stretch or be rowdy and aggressive and they weren't. very polished, but nothing like the liveliness of a pearl jam set. i would have expected that from interpol, but not muse.

also, the black keys were great and got a great crowd response. a nice gritty but still kinda chill late afternoon set.

im still sorta kicking myself for missing daft punk. ben harper was good, but just like any other ben harper set ive seen. everyone who saw daft punk seems to have ahd their mind blown. it was all i heard about all weekend.

Yeah I wish I would have seen Interpol rather than Muse. Their show just made me want to go home. I think the reason I don't like them so much is becuase I can't stand their lead singer. The whole trying to spread atheism and songs about the Apocalypse are both things I can't relate to and things I don't wish to hear in my music. I'm not even a really religious person but I just like to cut loose and have a good time when listening to a band play. It's different with Pearl Jam becuase you humanize Eddie and how he talks to the crowd and you feel like he is talking to you as an individual. You can relate to Pearl Jam's songs becuase they are about human thoughts and feelings. Muse just comes out, sings about how the end is coming and there is no hope, and leaves; they don't even talk to us while they are doing it!

i think it's just part of their schtick, but it is a bit much sometimes. they're better in small doses.

interpol would have been cool im sure. i saw their setlist and id have given anything to see them close with stella.

It was My Morning Jacket for me. I saw them open for our boys in Cleveland and was not "overly" impressed. That set changed my mind!

I only go to go on friday, but some highlights for me included.

The Kings of Leon- I've listened to them for a while now, but never saw them live. They completely blew me away and I was so pumped when Eddie came out for Slow Night So Long. It's such a wild song and was just icing on a phenomenal performance, besides Pearl Jam this was the highlight for me.

The Black Angels- Never really listened to them or heard them before, but holy shit they are wild as shit.

MMJ- Saw them live at PJ in Albany thought they were wild then and they are still wild. I love the song Run Thru, especially when the crowd thought it was over, but I knew it wasn't cause I listen to it all the time.

I wish I could have made it all weekend so I could have seen Interpol, Silverchair, and Sam Roberts Band, but oh well. I'm going to see Interpol in Albany though so that will be a good time!!!

The Chicago Vegan Diner restaraunt stand.

As a 5 year Vegan I counted on having no options for food then low and behold a guy wearing a "meat sucks" shirt tells me to visit the stand where he's working.

The food was amazing!!! The Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and 'Not Dog' made my day. I wish I could've eaten more, but the heat really didn't give me too much of an appetite.

The first show of the weekend The Fratelli's were damn good, but Rodrigo y Gabriela stole the show for me they were amazing, I was feeling real hungover and it was sweltering out but they had me moving the whole time!

I will say I'm surprised by the negative comments about the Muse. They rocked it at the Forum earlier this year. I would go to Vegoose in a heartbeat if I had the funds.

Ryan Shaw was friggin great

The Roots were awesome

Daft Punk was cool as shit

MMJ kicked ass

Tie for best stuff for what I didn't know:

LOVED satellite party and anything Perry did all weekend

Ben Harper, never saw the guy. and his cameos with PJ give him no justice. Him and the Innocent Crimals were great!

Line of the whole festival: Perry Farrel with SP at the kids stage introing Pets and saying my other band was Porno for Pyros....nothing like saying porn in front of 100 little kids Perry!

My girl is big on Muse and I kind of dig them ... we're thinking of going to Vegas in October for Vegoose (Muse is there, with Rage, Iggy, Daft Punk Public Enemy, Gogol Bordello, etc) ... but, if people find Muse to be not so great, would be good to know.

I thought Muse was great, we're actually going to see them Saturday in Boston. I was perusing the Muse board to see what they all thought of the show last weekend and I guess the band was having some major issues with their sound equipment and were essentially playing deaf and that the band thought it was one of their worst performances. I know nothing about stage gear so not sure how much I beleive it, but that's what was said.

I also think that with the type of music they play and the type of show they put on they kind of have to keep the songs fairly similar to the recorded versions. I love that PJ mixes it up and changes lyrics, guitar solos, drums, etc. but I don't think Muse's music is as conducive to that type of show.

Same here, but sadly no Vic for us. Loved their show as well.

I also thought the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and KOL were very good too. I still don't get MMJ, they're just not my cup of tea. Although I did think Jim James' version of Rainbow Connection over at the Kids stage was adorable : )

Daft Punk was good but I think I was expecting more due to all the Coachella hype. Surprisingly my husband loved the show even though he went to see them unwillingly over Ben Harper. Unfortunately we left a little after mid set to see Harper, but once we got over there decided to skip out and get something to eat before the crowds hit---we ended up hearing Masters of War from the sidewalk across the street as we were leaving.

Kinda surprised myself. That was my first time seeing Muse and I was blown away. I thought they fucking rocked. If they were having technical problems I had no idea. Obviously to each their own. I was very impressed and I am now a big fan of theirs.

I also really enjoyed the Black Keys, I have been a fan for a while and this was the first time seeing them live. Everything I expected and more!

The Roots were really good too. Never really listened to them but I think I am going to start now. Was also impressed by Silverchair. Great energy and the lead singer has great showmanship.

I have seen KOL and MMJ several times each and I enjoyed both sets. Especially KOL. This was my 6th time seeing them and it was their best so far. And Ed coming out and singing with them, well that just topped it off for me.

The Hold Steady were a total blast. I was so impressed. He sounded just as neurotic on stage as I hoped he would be from his album voice.

G-Love put on an amazing show. And we just thought we'd kill some time over by G-love. What a frontman! Great band.

The Cribs were a disappointment. Flat, not a good arc to their set, need to gell a little more. And we were very excited about them.

LCD Soundsystem was a bummer too.

although I am a huge Ben Harper fan, I had to hang out with my hubby to see what the big hype about Daft Punk was. There were SO MANY PEOPLE THERE FOR THAT. I missed the whole rave scene as I am older than most of you. But I hung out of two songs and had to head to Ben Harper. I just wasn't feeling the Daft Punk thing but I totally respect their artisian ship.

Also, the lead singer of MMJ and Patti Smith at the Kidzapalooza stage were super fun. Rainbow Connection, People Have the Power - they were my two highlights of the weekend.

Muse blew me away also. They were definitely having technical difficulties and still put on a great show, but that was also the reason for the delay between songs. When we saw them, there was no delay.

They have never been ones to chat it up with the crowd and I think someone stated that they take themselves too seriously, that's so not true. As the band has said, how can you have a song like "Knights of Cydonia" and not have a sense of humor? lol Matt Bellamy said that song title was an obvious joke. When we saw them, they were having a good time on stage. I found their set quite euphoric and I rocked out hard.

I am glad you enjoyed Silverchair. Daniel is definitely in a happier place now and you can tell when he is on stage performing.

I wish I was going to Vegoose!

I only attended Sunday and 2 bands that I saw that I would/will look into were The Cribs and Mr. North. I knew nothing of either band but they both had me tapping my feet.

Now Iggy was unbelievable, which I expected. TV on the Radio were very good and I'll definitely learn more about them.

Oh yeah PJ wasn't bad either

Biggest surprise for me was The Roots. I've heard good things, but I'm not really into rap so I was surprised how much I enjoyed their show.

Biggest let down for me probably was Spoon. Their show wasn't bad, but I skipped most of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to get close, and I was a little disappointed. Not much interaction with the crowd and they left out some key songs I wanted to hear.

The high point for me was Eddie playing with Ben Harper. I was four rows from Eddie playing the greatest anti-war song of all time with Ben. It really can't get much better than that!

i was about to say the same thing. i saw them last week and holy jesus did they rock. they were just about note perfect for the most part (as if that's a bad thing???) but the show was great. they're now on my short list of must see bands when they come back around.

also, glad to see that someone was psyched about rodrigo y gabriela. haven't seen them live, but their s/t album is amazing.
