aside from some of the more obvious answers, this band came to mind..

    Mountain

this group featured a very heavy (as in weighed alot) guitarist named Leslie West..

some may have heard the hit song Mississippi Queen

also, even though he was an ass, Alvin Lee with Ten Years After

    awesome rock n roll blues..
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

If you're interested in moving out of the 60s and 70s, it sounds to me like you'd really dig Guns N' Roses. They're heavy, classic rock, melodic, energetic, passionate, and there's constant great guitar. Pick up Appetite for Destruction.

Some good 60s/70s bands...I'm a bit of a 60s novice, my liking music really starts with Zeppelin because they're the best band of all time and almost every group I enjoy has some Zeppelin influence. Check out The Who's Live at Leeds, Meddle by Pink Floyd, Sabbath's self titled, The Yes Album by...Yes, Electric Ladyland by Hendrix, and make for damn sure you pick up Physical Graffiti and Houses of the Holy by Zeppelin, those two albums were the band at their peak. And, even though its not rock, do yourself and favor and check out some Miles Davis.

you must add some stones, pick Sticky Fingers if you want an album or pick Hot Rocks if you want a greatest hits collection.

    Also get a Faces CD
There's Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson......and then everybody else.

Thanks a bunch for the responses. Looks like I got some research to do. I know I'll definately finish my Led Zeppelin collection in time so no worries there. It doesn't have to be from the 60's/70's but I know that's the era that those classic rock bands came from.

Basically I've really been into anything that resembles classic rock and amazing lead guitarists. I've just started building my collection of Led Zeppelin (have I, II, and IV) so I'm going to work my way up through that. What I was wondering is where should I go next? As I said, I'm looking for stuff with some amazing guitar work in some form or another. Where should I go next exactly? Oh, and another thing I really like is when the vocalist has a lot of passion in his voice like Robert Plant or Eddie Vedder. I'm still relatively new to music and I've only begun to build my CD collection. I've seemingly gone through waves of liking a music genre and right now I'm kind of in this classic rock phase. I'll be writing down the bands you guys list and checking them out so let loose.

haha :D that's awesome! :) I'm on the same boat as you :D I'm building my Led Zep collection. So far I have II, IV, Houses of the Holy, and In Through the Out Door. The next one I'm getting is Physical Grafitti, then I, III, Presence and CODA.

So far Led Zeppelin I is my favorite album of theirs followed by IV then II. How Many More Times is definately my favorite Zep song at the moment as well.

Today I borrowed that GnR album Appetite for Destruction as well as Jimi Hendrix 'Band of Gypsies' from someone at college. I think I'm going to get some of Hendrix's stuff but the GnR album was a bit meh. I love the music and guitars but the lyrics are pretty bad to me. It was worth a shot though.

Physical Graffiti will blow you away!
    Agreed.....IMHO the best Zep album

You might also want to consider the following material:

Blind Faith "Blind Faith...the deluxe edition"-Eric Clapton and Stevie Winwood. "nuff said"

Who "Who's Next....the deluxe edition"-lots of bonus material

King Crimson "Red"-heavy stuff, masterful guitar..besides I must mention KC every chance that I get

    Dire Straits-"Making Movies"

Perhaps try some Neil young. I would suggest picking up his live album LIVE RUST.

It gives you some of his softer acoustic ballads and his loud distorted guitar songs as well.

but if you are looking for albums Harvest or Rust never sleeps might be good starters

"Decade" would also work as a retrospective.......the price can be a deal breaker on that collection.

I like Gn'R. Perhaps you would like to check out GN'R Lies (an acoustic album), and the epic Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. In UYI I you'll find November Rain, Don't Cry, Live and Let Die, Dust N' Bones, etc. And in UYI II you'll find Civil War, Yesterdays, the cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door, You Could Be Mine, Estranged, among others.

A lot of people prefer these albums to Appetite for Destruction. Maybe you'll like those better :D

    Hope that helps! :)

p.s.: My fav Led Zeppelin songs at the moment are Dazed and Confused, Over the Hills and Far Away, In My Time of Dying, and The Ocean :)
