I like Closer, but it's not the kind of song you want to sing along to on the bus is it ? :o

I'll bet it's pretty wild to see it live though....
I'd sing it on a bus. in fact I probably have.

Such a great dancefloor song. Specially if you have a hot girl to grind with ;)

He did. After the last show of the tour. Something about not wanting the live performances to become stale.

she leaves a trail of honey to show me where she's been
she has the blood of reptile just underneath her skin
seeds from a thousand others drip down from within"

Reminds me of a very unhealthy relationship I was in a couple years ago. But I digress. This album was truly Trent's masterpiece, and to be honest everything else doesn't even come close. Although my anticipation for The Fragile was huge, it was a bit of a let down compared to TDS.

oh to be 17 again in 1994 when this album came out

definitly a life changing album for me, listen to it so much, all my friends were into it, it's one of those albums that was a soundtrack of my life for 2-3 months.

saw them in 1994, very cool

definitly his masterpiece, I have been listening to some NIN bootlegs on it, and they had quite a bit of Pretty Hate Machine tracks on it

ha, I remember reading the review for PHM in grade 9 in the high school paper, the name stood out for me

    Heresy.

I am a big fan of The Fragile as well, though I think "starfuckers" is out of place on it. Not a bad song, but just doesn't fit with the album.

No no - it fits - its the comic relief in an otherwise very dark album. Esp. when you picture Manson in that silly video.

The Downward Spiral is without a doubt a masterpiece. Probably my favorites are The Becoming, Reptile, Heresy, Piggy, March of the Pigs, Mr.Self Destruct aw hell the entire thing.

Do you guys know that Trent's got his remix site up? He's released INSTRUMENTAL versions of TDS tracks for people to play with (and just to listen to), and to DOWNLOAD. He's also put up his video of the accoustic version of The Becoming (off Still) right on the nin front page. Go here: http://remix.nin.com/ to check out all the loveliness.

  • I love the combo of March Of The Pigs into Closer.

And Hurt may very well be the greatest song ever written.

I sing along to it on the bus....

and I saw it live this year....

Yeah it was pretty wild, I believe me and one of my best female friends were the floor show after stripping t shirts and 'dancing' with each other.... AHEM!! *embarrassed*

but then... you knew this ;)
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
  • Year Zero didn't really float my boat it has to be said.

I prefer classic NIN, Pretty Hate Machine rules but Downward Spiral is the essential album for anyone to get though, nothing beats Ruiner and Mr Self Destruct IMO.

  • For anyone who thinks it ends with the downward spiral, listen to The fragile on vinyl with a candle burning and you will see your entire future.

Wow, I couldn't disagree with this more. I think The Fragile is one of the 5 most brilliant albums ever made. And while I do love The Downward Spiral, I'd rather listen to The Fragile, Pretty Hate Machine, or Broken any day.

Haha, amen to that. I seriously tell people this all the time. I fucking hate the fact that they put Starfuckers on it. It had no business being on that album.

The Fragile is brilliant. I think they're all brilliant except for the lastest one.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not putting down any of the other albums. I just think The Fragile took Trent's sense of broken rhythms and melodies to a whole different level that he never achieved before or after.

Believe me, I do enjoy The Fragile. La Mer/Great Below is as beautiful as NIN gets. It's just not as great as TDS, IMHO. My biggest complaint about it has always been that it didn't need to be a double album. It feels a bit bloated and I think it would have been a really awesome CD with the best 14-15 songs, IMO. Even Trent has since ackowledged that he probably should've narrowed it down and that album sales were hurt by it. I'll try to find the Spin magazine link.
It doesn't help matters that the terrible StarsInc. made the final tracklisting and 2 of the best songs- 10 Miles High and The New Flesh- were outtakes. That being said, Fragile is still a good album that contains many of NIN's best work. I just need coffee to listen in its entirety!

Those are all valid points. I do think that disc 2 drags on a little bit. But man, something about that album just hits me in a way that TDS doesn't. I guess we'll just agree that Trent is amazing and all the NIN albums are excellent (with the possible exception of Year Zero), but agree to disagree on which is his best work.

Year Zero is still excellent, in my opinion, but I understand why others don't like it. It's a very bold move for Trent, as it's completely unlike any of his previous work. This album, like the rest, is NOT about him. I can understand why people are annoyed at the music on the album, as a lot of the drumbeats are similar, and it does feel a little rushed, but i've been listening to it a fair bit recently, and I have to say I forgot how good it was! I love a lot of the lyrics, and it's quite a diverse album.

    But each to their own.

Oh. And The Fragile may be my favourite album. Ever.
