*Best Cover Versions You've Ever Heard*

Thought it would be cool to hear some good cover versions of great or not so great songs. I'll start by listing some songs that i think stand out as exceptional covers. Feel free to explain your choices too.

"All Around The World" - The Pixies - Newport Folk Festival - Folk Song\Traditional
This has become one of my favorite covers in recent memory, this performance, specificaly.
I guess the Grateful Dead used to cover this too. Origins in question, old folk tune. "Rock Me Joey!" moment at around 1:30. Shivers my spine. One more *amazing* cover by the Pixies is Winterlong by Neil Young. *Fantastic*

Cryin, Waitin, Hopin - Marshall Crenshaw - LaBamba Sndtrk - original by Buddy Holly
Now i absolutely adore Buddy Holly, but from the moment i heard the Crenshaw version from LaBamba i was just in a stupor. Its just a sad little love song, but the back beat he throws in, the driving pulsing rythm, that smidge of reverb\delay and of course the ridiculously wonderful solo just put the original Holly dity to shame. All though i still have an afection for that Holly voice at 1:40 where he does "all night long" in the original. live version for shits and giggles.

"Dead Flowers" - Guns N Roses - live in Argentina '93 - original by Rolling Stones
There are a good few versions around, including one from Gilby's "Pawnshop Guitars" CD with Axl singing. This song always gets me going, though. Not much else to say except rock on boys! Here for added fun is another great one: "Salt of the Earth" Axl, Izzy and the Stones. And who could forget Axl singing "Free Fallin" with Tom Petty back when MTV actualy had some balls? better audio of FFallin

Stray Cat Blues - Soundgarden - S.O.M.M.S - original by Rolling Stones
Man, this fucking version blows away the Stones. I mean wipes the floor with them. Wow!

"Too Much Of Nothing" - Peter Paul & Mary - original by Bob Dyaln
This live version isn't all that, but the original recorded version by PPM is rock solid. I dunno why i like it so much, but if you hear Dylan's version you'll realize how great the arangement here is.

I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself - The White Stripes - original by Dusty Springfield
For some reason when i was 14 to 16 i used to listen to Dusty Springfield a lot, even though i was also listening to a lot of "industrial" music too. Weird. First time i heard this by the Stripes I nearly pissed my pants! God damn is it a powerful version!

Son of a Gun - Nirvana - original by The Vaselines
Nothing much needed to say here. Put a "K" over your heart for Kurt. This song will always give me chills.
